Hey, I am new to Forgotten Realms, and I was looking for info on what the Deep Maw is and have been having a hard time finding anything. So I come to the vast knowledge of the community. Any help?

Can't say I've ever heard of it in previous lore, so I'm guessing its new with 4e. Doubtful there's much on it that isn't in the FRCG if that's the case.

Hmm... That was what I figured when I couldn't find anything. Oh well... I guess that means I will use it as I want for right now... Thanks for the response!

-Just throwing out a few ideas/suggestions:

  • Is obviously related to the Underdark, in some shape, way, or form.
  • Dwarven settlers.
  • Possible connections to the Plane of Shadow/Elemental Plane of Earth/Elemental Plane of Fire at the bottom.

Deep Maw is one of the new rifts that appeared throughout Faerun during the timeline jump between editions - most likely as a direct result of the Spellplague, I imagine. They often connect directly to the Underdark, & a bunch of them have popped up (well, down, actually) all over Faerun.

As for its location, Deep Maw appears in the Netheril region, just north & west of the rebuilt city of Oreme. It can be found on pg 165 of the FRCG or on the worldmap provided with the book, & it also appears on page 121 of the FRPG. However, a quick scan of the Netheril sections for both books reveals absolutely nothing about Deep Maw, aside from the obvious fact that it's a really big hole in the ground.

This "fill in the blanks" approach seems to be par for the course for the various new rifts, as even the massive Underchasm gets barely a mention. So I suppose it's up to you to determine whatever secrets Deep Maw holds.

EDIT: I just realized that there's a good chance you probably own the books & know this much already, but you did say you were new, so I'll leave the post alone...
