| #1guntherfuzz8Aug 16, 2009 20:31:35 | Total Forgotten Realms noob getting ready to play a Halfling Rogue in 4E. Can't seem to find a suitable God for him to worship (casually) in the setting. Can anyone drop some enlightenment on me? |
| #2LordManshoonAug 16, 2009 20:33:10 | Brandobaris, halfling god of rogues and thievery. If you desire some other options: - Mask, god of shadows and thieves. An expert schemer and is usually a few steps ahead of everyone else. He's currently out-of-action canonically, but he can be brought back with ease. - Tymora, goddess of luck and adventurers. She favors the bold and the foolish, both of which the average rogue is from time to time. - Beshaba, goddess of misfortune and bad luck. She's cruel and every bit as fickle as her sister, but she's a good deal more interesting in my opinion, and blows her sister out of the water. This works if you don't plan on going good-hearted. EDIT: There are other options in addition to these. Exactly how do you envision your rogue? What's he like? |
| #338deltaAug 16, 2009 20:36:00 | I would say Cyric, but I am biased.:D |

Can anyone drop some enlightenment on me? -Really, a deity isn't "tailor made" for professions/classes, as much as characters' motives and/or worldly concepts. The character is a Halfling so, as mentioned, Brandobaris is the best fit, with Tymora coming in in a near second. |

Great minds think alike and all that.:D |
| #6lord_karsusAug 16, 2009 22:22:17 | Ah well. Great minds think alike and all that.:D -That's exactly it. |
| #7guntherfuzz8Aug 16, 2009 22:32:22 | Brandobaris, halfling god of rogues and thievery. Brandobaris sounds perfect for my character. I didn't see him in the 4E book, was he buried in the fine print somewhere? What alignment is he? Tymora was the one I'd found that I was leaning towards but figured there had to be a God of Thieves. |
| #8LordManshoonAug 16, 2009 23:16:14 | Brandobaris sounds perfect for my character. I didn't see him in the 4E book, was he buried in the fine print somewhere? What alignment is he? In the FRCG? He's on page 81, Exarch #6. Unaligned, male, Thievery sphere, dwells in the Green Fields. |

What alignment is he? -A quick overview can be found in the Forgotten Realms Wiki, but if you want the whole story, see his entry in Demihuman Deities, the 2e sourcebook. His portfolios are Stealth, Adventuring, and Halfling Rogues. |
| #10parvasAug 17, 2009 14:49:37 | The rogue is the most atheist class ;) |
| #11LordManshoonAug 17, 2009 15:31:09 | The rogue is the most atheist class ;) No it isn't. Because none of the classes are atheist. Certain individuals are atheists. |
| #12StiggerAug 17, 2009 15:33:56 | Indeed. That's what wizards are for. |
| #13LordManshoonAug 17, 2009 15:38:00 | That's what wizards are for. And even then there are plenty of religious arcane spellcasters, even if the magic deities no longer exist. Hells, with this whole "rituals empower priests, not the deities themselves" set-up, I imagine atheists could become Clerics and pretend to worship a deity, just to gain divine power. They'll most likely be found out eventually and punished, but it's worth a shot, especially if they can Bluff well. |
| #14lord_karsusAug 17, 2009 21:10:09 | Indeed. That's what wizards are for. -And, some Wizards just skip the entire chain and process, and make themselves deities. :D |
| #15guntherfuzz8Aug 17, 2009 21:32:36 | A hearty "Thank You" to Lords Manshoon & Karsus for their assistance. And as for Rogues being atheists, just because you belive in creating your own luck doesn't mean it hurts to pay lip service to the Gods :D. |
| #16lord_karsusAug 17, 2009 21:37:57 | -Jak Fleet, Erevis Cale's 'partner' (in crime!) is a prime example: thief and religious. |
| #17LordManshoonAug 17, 2009 22:00:03 | -Jak Fleet, Erevis Cale's 'partner' (in crime!) is a prime example: thief and religious. The little-known Ebeian Hart is another one. Full-blooded elf rogue from Waterdeep and a pretty devout follower of Fenmarel Mestarine. Shame he made his exit rather quickly. |
| #1838deltaAug 17, 2009 23:35:09 | And even then there are plenty of religious arcane spellcasters, even if the magic deities no longer exist. Thats how Cyric's followers will infiltrate the major chuches in the Realms. In the bid to free HIM. Think of the Roleplaying opportunities that would entail.:D Some wizards also EPIC FAILED to make themselves a god.;) |
| #19LordManshoonAug 18, 2009 0:10:21 | Thats how Cyric's followers will infiltrate the major chuches in the Realms. In the bid to free HIM. Think of the Roleplaying opportunities that would entail.:D They'll have to compete with the Sharrans, who will attempt the same thing and claim they thought of it first. And there's bound to be two Cyricists undercover at the same temple, who aren't aware of each other's identities, and wind up slaying each other after feeling threatened.:D |
| #2038deltaAug 18, 2009 6:00:49 | "Not in my Realms!":P That is an interesting idea, I would rather have those Sharrans acting that way. ![]() On topic: Cyric was a rogue so...he would know what a rogue wants, what a rogue needs. Come to the Darkside....we have cookies. ![]() |
| #21LordManshoonAug 29, 2009 14:25:53 | On topic: Cyric was a rogue so...he would know what a rogue wants, what a rogue needs. Come to the Darkside....we have cookies. I haven't forgotten. Though I must say, for a rogue, he certainly seemed to lack grace. Brute force over finesse, but I suppose that's a viable path for him. Now that I think of it, he had that mentor/nemesis if I recall, from the earlier Avatar books. That guy didn't last too long. |
| #2238deltaAug 29, 2009 15:54:49 | Maybe he was a Brutal Scoundrel in a past life.;) :D |
| #23LordManshoonAug 29, 2009 16:04:10 |
I dunno. I kinda pictured him as a Brutal Scoundrel. Are the two similar in theme? ![]() (This f_____g laugh smilie looks like he had a stroke. I use him only so he suffers.) |
| #2438deltaAug 29, 2009 16:09:43 | Ok so I spell like a three year old. Sue me! I am not using those crappy smilies. |
| #25LordManshoonAug 29, 2009 16:13:03 |
Just pushing your buttons, my Cyric-loving friend.
Hey, I don't like 'em either. I find myself forced to use them in a poor attempt to convey emotion. *sigh* I hope we get the old ones back. Nothing better than a veritable horde of quality smilies at your disposal. |
| #2638deltaAug 29, 2009 16:18:21 | I blame the New smilies on LK or Markus. They were always griping at me about my use and abuse of the old smilies. Maybe Karma has taken place, and now like a junkie, I need my smilie fix. On second thought....where is that rascal Stigger at...? I think some tomfoolery is about. |
| #27pamelaAug 30, 2009 3:34:04 | Sorry 38Delta, it was my fault. I like a basic minimum of smileys. *runs away* *darts back in* Oh, and may I say how GLAD I am that they've got Cyric locked up and out of sight at this point in time in the Realms?:P GuntherFuzz8, I definitely don't suggest worshipping a god whose ended up locked behind bars himself... *runs laughing back into the morning light* |
| #2838deltaAug 30, 2009 3:49:15 | Ha! So it was you! LOL What better God, to serve as a Rogue than one who knows what it is like to be "Under House Arrest"? He knows the joy of getting out on Bail, after spending 90 days in the County Jail. One day soon Cyric will get out on Parole. Think Charles Manson, out in the Free World. Ok on second thought go with the Gnome God. |
| #29pamelaAug 30, 2009 4:01:15 |
Ooh, way to shoot down your own argument! :P He does bring up a good point though. If you think your character is likely to end up on Death Row, definitely consider Cyric. He might be able to get the judges to settle for life imprisonment instead. ;) |
| #3038deltaAug 30, 2009 4:08:32 |
I have been known to do that. For the Death Row part: "It takes a Thief to know a Thief." |
| #31Nai_CalusAug 30, 2009 10:05:37 | There are no rogue gods except Erevan Ilesere. Any other rogue gods you may think exist are merely more of his pranks and deceptions. |
| #32LordManshoonAug 30, 2009 20:42:21 |
So, if we consider Mask an aspect of Erevan, that means Erevan lost a battle to Shar? How depressing... |
| #33Nai_CalusAug 30, 2009 20:58:37 | No, Mask just plain never existed in the first place. There was no battle, it was just Shar trying to make herself look better. Erevan is still giggling, though. |
| #3438deltaAug 31, 2009 0:19:59 | I liked Mask. I was agast when I read the Last Cale book. I believe he will be back. |
| #35LordManshoonAug 31, 2009 15:15:16 |
As do I. He's my second favorite "Faerunian" deity, behind Helm. Stark contrast between the two, I know. I liked how Paul gave Mask his exit in Shadowrealm. I actually thought it was kinda badass to give himself to Shar, and in the process keep his greatest secret from her. And I'm pretty sure Paul's new trilogy is going to set up Mask's return, even if it's in the form of Vasen Cale rising to divinity. |
