| #5keverasApr 14, 2009 4:12:43 | Malkizid Unlike say Mephistopheles, we do know Malkizid's previous history and what type of angel he was before his fall. So I would describe him as being a Fallen Solar ;) |

So I would describe him as being a Fallen Solar ;) The beings who would eventually become known as the baatezu, the original ones at least, inclusive of Asmodeus and possibly others of the Lords of the 9, began as servitors to the primordial exemplars of Law. They fell from LN to LE, and as the cosmos developed, later versions of that history added/corrupted the story, such as calling them angels (which did not exist at the time as it happened prior to the origin of true deities), inserting whatever local gods were worshipped into the story, etc. We know for certain that Asmodeus had that origin. Baalzebul we also know, because he started out as a throne archon named Triel (note archon not angel). The others are less certain, probably less so if/when 4e tries to rewrite their history entirely. |
| #8krownhunter07Apr 14, 2009 17:17:43 | Nyphithys I think she was killed in The Pirate King |
| #9zananApr 15, 2009 6:44:52 | I think she was killed in The Pirate King For the list, this does not matter. It could well be that people want to play long before Pirate King, Spell Plague and whatnot. We just collect known devils (and demons) "of the Realms". |
| #10krownhunter07Apr 15, 2009 9:39:44 | For the list, this does not matter. It could well be that people want to play long before Pirate King, Spell Plague and whatnot. We just collect known devils (and demons) "of the Realms". Yes, but it also asks for location. If she was banished at a certain time, it should be noted. Unless this is a non-4e source? I thought this was to be useful for all editions? |
| #11krownhunter07Apr 15, 2009 9:53:48 | Oh, it's also worth noting that the book takes place before the Spellplague, not after. |
| #12keverasApr 15, 2009 12:06:59 | The beings who would eventually become known as the baatezu, the original ones at least, inclusive of Asmodeus and possibly others of the Lords of the 9, began as servitors to the primordial exemplars of Law. They fell from LN to LE, and as the cosmos developed, later versions of that history added/corrupted the story, such as calling them angels (which did not exist at the time as it happened prior to the origin of true deities), inserting whatever local gods were worshipped into the story, etc. Then, what were these guys (I think it explicitly mentioned Asmodeus, Mephi, and Dispater who fell from LN to LE, didn't it?) before they became devils? What we know for sure, however, is that Malkizid was a solar in the service of Corellon and so I'd list him as a Fallen Solar while I'd still list Mephi just as Unique. |
| #13quale1Apr 15, 2009 14:11:38 | possibly they were the aphanacts (Dragon 341 I think) or even some earlier unknown race think Meph and Dispater were baatezu from the start, 4e changes something considering that Ed wrote the Nine Hells articles all those baatezu nobles could be posted here... |
| #14Shemeska_the_MarauderApr 15, 2009 15:47:30 | possibly they were the aphanacts (Dragon 341 I think) or even some earlier unknown race The idea has been floated around (which I subscribe to) that the aphanacts and baatezu were both descended from a common LN progenitor race* that served the primal powers of Law. *of which Asmodeus would have been the (or among the) most powerful. |
| #15AegeriApr 16, 2009 5:18:29 | We know for certain that Asmodeus had that origin. Baalzebul we also know, because he started out as a throne archon named Triel (note archon not angel). The others are less certain, probably less so if/when 4e tries to rewrite their history entirely. Asmodeus has the same origin in 4E, actually somewhat further elaborated on, as he has had in the past. He's just been elevated to the level of God now instead of just being the most powerful archfiend. I don't believe there is anything really written about some of the others though, but their origins are probably the same. |
| #16zananApr 16, 2009 6:55:57 | BTW, the FRCG lists all Nine Lords of Hell as being present within Faerûn's "pantheon", though they are referred to as Eight and the "god" Asmodeus now. |
| #17lord_karsusApr 19, 2009 23:11:41 | -Good point. A bunch of them have various mentions all over the place, too. Sometimes, you don't see what's in front of your nose. |
| #18XunValDorl_of_HouseKilsekNov 05, 2009 21:50:54 | I don't know about FR, but in the older editions of D&D Asmodeus was at one time a god himself that was cast out. His body was a massive snake who created hell when his body fell. It was said that he had a wound that never did heal and it constantly flowed from his body for eons. All the creatures of hell supposedly spawned from his blood. The shape that everyone knew was supposedly an avatar that he created. That is what I remember. |

| #20gomeztooNov 06, 2009 3:48:32 | Technically, Grazz't is a devil.How about succubi and alufiends? They would be devils now. |
| #21sfdragonNov 06, 2009 4:34:37 | werent alufiends an off shoot of the half fiend? |
| #22gomeztooNov 06, 2009 4:39:14 | They are offspring of humans and succubi. Ued to be demons, but technically would now be devils (well, half-devils). |
| #23addle-cove-anarchistNov 06, 2009 9:25:02 | Grazzt is a full blooded tanar'ri lord, infused by even three layer, that's basic lore, decades old |
| #24NolwelenNov 06, 2009 19:52:43 | That would be true if the latest retcon had not taken place. In 4e it has indeed been mentioned that Gaz'zt once has been a Lieutenant of Asmodeus, who was ordered to conquer a slice of the Abyss as large as possible, to build a bridge-head in the Abyss. Graz'zt did actually a pretty good job, but then he decided that it is better to rule in the Abyss then to serve in Hell. ;) |
| #25NolwelenNov 07, 2009 8:44:13 | Azazel? Alloces, the Butcher of Nessus |
| #26_teo_Aug 26, 2010 12:33:22 | It's useless to use a single thread about this topic. I think it's better to create a thread "before 4E" and one "after 4E". And the references from AD&D 2nd Ed. "Guide to Hell" book, like the one of the Great Wheel created by Asmodeus & Jazirian and other stuff, are all off topic cuz we are talking about Forgotte Realms and not Greyhawk. And, whatever, Grazzt a devil... What a blasphemy! ![]() About the devils from Dragonspear Castle, Baazka the pit fiend and the three cornugon brothers are the only devils mentioned from that devilish place? I need some information about that for this thread of mine. ![]() |
| #27clodiaDec 21, 2010 5:32:32 |
You are mistaken, friend. Grazz't is a Demon Prince, and succubi and alufiends are tanar'ri (demons), and are the lot of them are therefore anathema to, and would be slain on sight if possible by the devilish minions of The Lords of the Eight (previously Nine) under the ultimate direction of Asmodeus himself. |
| #28clodiaDec 21, 2010 5:35:21 |
BTW, apologies for the necro reply, but I simply could not let that (also caught by a few others above) slip by my belated watch. I remember when demons were typed by roman numerals, after all. ![]() |
| #29gomeztooDec 21, 2010 7:10:53 | You can fume at WotC for changing this, but Graz'zt was originally a archdevil, who went on a crusade for Asmodeus into the Abbyss. Once there, he got corrupted, and apparently betrayed his patron. From the succubi he had with him (also devils, acc to the 4th edition Monster Vault), some betrayed him and were turned into ferroliths, others joined the forces of the abbyss, and others returned to the Nine Hells. So while Graz'zt is nowadays considered a demon prince, he is in orgin - according to the new lore - a devil. The abbyss changed his nature to an elemental rather than a immortal. Gomez |
| #30clodiaDec 21, 2010 15:11:09 | I acquiesce, and bow to your superior grasp of lore. Well, that was hard to write, I am not accustomed to being bested in the minutiae of lore. Give yourself a pat on the back! I will return to the books after work tonight...7p-7:30a is rough, but I will prevail! |
| #31Shemeska_the_MarauderDec 28, 2010 0:20:11 |
I'd be curious how many people actually use him with the retconned 4e origin versus the 1e/2e/3.x lore of him as not only an Abyssal lord, but the literal child of Pale Night, one of the oldest and most powerful (obyrith) Abyssal Lords. The alteration of that much history, on such a fundamental level is just jarring to me. |
| #3218DELTADec 28, 2010 14:52:16 | I liked Graz'zt the way he was... |
| #3318DELTADec 29, 2010 2:05:15 | ![]() Not WotC, they changed it for whatever reason...;) |

'Laid off' is the correct term.;) ![]() |
| #35tweak_the_whackedJan 17, 2011 14:33:02 | I like to entertain the idea that Graz'zt is the child of Pale Night and Asmodeus himself, tying both stories up in a nice little bow. Also puts a good spin on Graz'zt taking special offense to someone refering to his realm as "The little hells"; it makes it a very personal insult. |
| #36gray_richardsonJan 17, 2011 19:58:02 | Not a bad solution, actually. I like it! |
| #37tweak_the_whackedJan 17, 2011 21:32:43 | Was someone on the horribly organized and highly incomplete forgotten realms wiki that proposed the idea, but its definitely the best solution I've seen. |

This way, none of the official lore contradicts the other. |
