All these topics in the FR forums and no posts. To me its just another stupid RSE after the spell plague which killed FR for me. Its like the FR forums died for some strange reason. Once upon a time we had the FR authors posting here. |
| #2StiggerDec 02, 2013 22:29:29 | I'd like to. I don't, but I would like to. Have to wait and see what transpires when the RPG books drop before I decide if I'm going to invest anything into the 5e Realms, monetary or otherwise. |
| #3sfdragonDec 02, 2013 23:29:57 | so far the sundering novels are good to go.
I've read the companions, wnat to read godborn and the last one the herald.

| #4Plaguescarred1Dec 03, 2013 3:22:35 | I do. I especially look forward to see how the landspace and pantheon will be restored. There isn't a lot of discussion on the FR boards because there isn't much to talk about right now, not much info transpired. Most threads are on Ed's article, which don't generate much discussion. More general Realmstalk can be found at Candlekeep. When the FR campaign setting is released, or some other major spoiler, i expect traffic will increase. We're all in wait-and-see mode it look like... |

| #6DoctorNecroticDec 05, 2013 10:41:56 | I remain cynical. I honestly don't care about the canon Realms too much, but the Sundering has been... fascinating. Do I care about it? Only enough to see where it goes. Other than that? Nah! I could give a demon's abyssal hindquarters where the Realms goes! It's been dead to me since 2008 and nothing will change that (beyond of morbid curiosity.)
Before coming back in 2012 for DDN, I was a regular around the Realms boards (Trying to remember my username. It's been more than 5 years, lol) Albeit, now I'm mostly a lurking ghost again, projecting myself from the planes. |
| #7JorunhastDec 05, 2013 16:21:33 | This "Sundering" stuff is just another Spellplague, IMO. This time around it's just more drawn out and adds even more nonsense that people hated: more Ao, more weird gods-drama, another reshuffling of the cosmology for no reason. And from what I hear in the 3rd novel, the gods are spewing out new Chosen like cheap PEZ candy. No thanks.
When this fails in terms of sales (and it will), maybe they'll reboot to OGB or the end of 3E, and then I'll take a look. Until then, this is another pass.

| #8CullAfulMoshuNDec 09, 2013 20:14:59 | I can't care about it simply because I hated the spellplague and what 4e did to the realms so much that I can't care about where they are taking the timeline even further after that. I set my 4e campaign in the North Circa 1390 DR, and while I like the look of Next so far, if I change or start a campaign using 5e rules I'll be picking up my 2e story again and setting the game back in 1370-1375. The 2e FR source books were still my favourites and gold mines of great places, characters and story ideas. Most of which will be of some use even in 5e I think. |
| #918DELTADec 15, 2013 3:16:56 | Not really. I haven't even bought the novels. I don't have the time anymore. Plus give WotC 5 to 10 years and someone will get a "bright idea" and will land the setting into another mess, like 4E did... |
| #10KhaeliethDec 16, 2013 8:37:20 | Too many RSEs and deaths/resurrections (books) etc killed any interest in the setting. It was simply too much to keep up with, in addition to the RSEs making my players feel like bystanders instead of participants in FR. I guess you could say a lack of continuity wrecked it for me, so whenever I want a high fantasy light-hearted campaign, I've turned time back to 1368 and not played out most events, like the phaerimms escaping, the Return of the Archwizards, Lolth's silence, the death of Manshoon etc, the Dracorage etc. I would potentially play them out if I could make them work as adventures, but that's about it. |
| #11DiffanDec 25, 2013 1:09:06 | Im holding out hope that the Sundering won't be bad but I fear that it won't bring back the lapsed fan and possibly alienate current fans that were introduced during the Spellplague. |
| #12TheLastGreatMithDec 29, 2013 18:47:17 | Not really. I read Paul S. Kemp's novel, but that was mostly for my own reasons.
In short, the problem here is that most people aren't sure what's going to happen. The Spellplague was basically a bust of sorts. It wasn't that they just changed the setting; Mulhorand and Unther were sort of never used, Thay's change was drastic, but the books were alright and didn't otherwise destroy the setting. The return of Netheril as a major power was interesting and was probably a good move I think. But then they also destroyed Halaruu, Lantan, and a few other fan favorite that were pretty cool, but basically gems in the rough.
5th Edition, while it does look good, basically Realmswise, it looks as though they might be trying to stuff the cat back in the bag. The problem with this is that it begs the question; what can you fix without creating an even bigger stir? Restoring Helm and Mystra won't really earn you any backlash, but how can you say that Amaunator is Lathander again (not that you really need to)? Or what about Talos? He was revealed to be Gruumsh, the God of Orcs. Or Tyr? He basically gave his power to Torm out of shame and later died. There isn't really much you can do to fix that ****-up. And what about Netheril? Are they going to sink their empire to bring us back to square one? Or how about High Imaskar? Are they going to end that Empire by the God-Kings again?
Wizards has probably by now realized that they upset a fair amount of people by trying to shove FR into the square-shape hole of 4th edition and it hasn't really paid off for them in any sort of way. But simply hitting the reset button would destroy any attempt at saving face and it would actually undo all the interesting things that 4th did bring. Netheril, High Imaskar, and the 4e angels were some of the better qualities of 4th edition that I liked.
I hope that this is just Wizard's attempt to try and do damage control on some of the really unpopular choices they made for 4e, most specifically, trimming the gods that everyone really liked (like Helm), as well as probably putting an end to the Spellplague and restoring the Weave, but hopefully the former won't be entirely gone.
That said, right now, I can't bring myself to really read it. I've just lost all interest in Drizzt. Honestly, I think I'm just too old or too in my twenties to really care about a character who reads as 'Lawful Good' and it doesn't really help that alot of new Realm characters read that way. Shadowbane and that Deva are basically the same characters; Luke Skywalker. Admittedly the tiefling warlock has more of her own character, but I stopped reading her first book halfway through and haven't really garnered the will to pick it up again. Paul S. Kemp's book was pretty good, but it felt like it had little to actually do with the series other than to help set it up. I'll most probably read Ed Greenwood's book, especially if it has Elminster. Despite the somewhat Mary-Sue stylization of Elminster, I do have a soft spot for him. And two of his last three books were really good (the second one dragged a bit--when even the characters comment on going back and forth so much, it means the story is going back and forth too much).
Personally, I just hope that Amaunator and Netheril get through this edition intact. Preferably, I would like to see Helm return and I'd like to return to multiple pantheons rather than just one large one. I don't mind having Talos really being Gruumsh, but I would like Talos to still be socially acceptable for humans to worship (or at least, as acceptable as they were before).

| #18GustaverenJan 26, 2014 4:20:18 | Well, I have not read in any of my Forgotten realms source books for years and I have dropped the idea of gm'ing a pre spellplague FR campaign using pathfinder rules. I will instead make a pathfinder campaign in golarion using pathfinder and an adventure path (when it is my turn to be GM). Forgotten realms feels dead to me and the more Golarion I buy and read the more interesting do it become to place a campaign in golarion. I am currently a player in a pathfinder Golarion campaign every second sunday (we are playing the rise of the runelords adventure path)
I guess it is possible i could get interested in running a pre spellplague FR campaign using pathfinder rules if WOTC made some books with the pathfinder version of prestige classes, iconic FR spells, items, iconic fr monsters etc since one of the reasons I am going with golarion campains is the availability of material using pathfinder rules. |
| #19DarakonisJan 29, 2014 7:19:18 | I've read The Reaver, the 4th book in the Sundering series, which releases in Feb. I also interviewed the author. Great things are coming to the Forgotten Realms! Some quotes from the interview, which you can see here.
"At the end of the Sundering, things that you were sorry to see leave the Forgotten Realms... There's a pretty good chance they'll be back."
"At the end of the Sundering, the people who liked the classic Realms... It will look a lot more like that again."
"Amaunator is out; Lathander is back." |
| #20biotech66Jan 29, 2014 20:27:16 | I'm optimistic. I'm reading the books and doing encounters.
I don't like that it is and isn't a reboot. I liked the 4e realms and it feels a bit like a slap in the face that WotC is changing everything I liked.
Odds are I like what happens, but still.

| #22SmartPaladinFeb 03, 2014 0:43:33 | I'm hopeful that D&D Next will bring back some of my fond memories of the Realms, though not all of the 4E novels were bad. Was kinda nice to see Paladins popping up all over the place. Some of the Deities I'd be happy if they left dead and others I want to see back. We can leave Tyr dead and stick with Bahamut as the God of Justice. They can also leave Helm dead while getting a new Helm. Just have some other Deity, Demigod, Exarch or whatever (within reason, mind), wear the full suit of armor, keep the helmet on, visor down and just call yourself Helm, and boom! You've got the God of Guardians back.
Guess I'm just hoping these deity resurrections will be well writen. Probably not, but it's fun to dream. |

| #25GwathirApr 07, 2014 10:15:06 | The old Netheril did choose Amanuator as their principal deity, but I don't think the Shades of the present still have affiliation to this god, in fact that would seem a bit of an oxy-moron. I could be wrong however.
Amanuator is an old god however, I was dissapointed when they made the morninglord 'the same god' as both gods are actually quite different with a different history, only thing common is the Sun domain.
Given the god's history (old and new), I don't think it should go down with the Netheril. |
