Dragonborn vs Dragonspawn

Sep 24, 2008 14:51:03 I only became familiar with the Dragonborn through 4e and the Dragonspawn through the Grand History of the Realms. Honestly, I wouldn't have allowed such a race in my old game, but 4e has forced me to look at the Dragonborn and realize that I was wrong and they're pretty cool after all.

But what's the difference beteen Dragonborn and Dragonspawn? I get the impression that Dragonspawn are evil. Help?

Sep 24, 2008 15:21:53 fluff wise, they're completely different. The only dragonborn came from Abeir, and only from Abeir.

Sep 24, 2008 18:14:16 personally i never liked either as far as playable characters. the new 4e realms just seems like it caters to little boys and power mongering char builders , than it caters to the old crowd. I won't be using the new over blown races any time soon i didnt really like the teiflings , and aasimar in 3e as palyable , and i sure don't take to the idea of dragon people as playable , not even in dragon lance did i ever allow players to be draconians (which these two are essentially).

Sep 24, 2008 20:11:05 Dragonspawn (Monster Manual 4, Dragons Of Faerun, others) were a bunch of draconic monsters that came out during WotC's big dragon push in the last years of 3.5. They were basically a bunch of specialised half-dragon half-something-else creatures that Tiamat created to fight her war against Bahamut. They were intended to be a monster race, not for PCs.

(I just treat them as half-dragons myself, without needing to apply a template to a monster. I've used them a few times, they're a nice to way to have a low-level party fight a "dragon" when a wyrmling would be embarrassing and a fully-grown one too hard. "You're fighting a dragon - crossed with a badger!")

Dragonborn in 3.5 (Races Of The Dragon) were devotees of Bahamut who underwent some transformation and actually hatched from an egg to become a draconic creature. So you'd get dragonborn humans, dragonborn gnomes, etc. These were a PC race.

And that's not getting into Dragonkin (Monsters Of Faerun, Spellscales (Races Of The Dragon, Half-Dragons, Draconic Races (Dragon Magic) and various others over the years.

Dragonborn in 4e are a bit different, and seem to be just a naturally born race of dragon people. But you could easily retcon 4e Dragonborn stats as being one of the other varieties.

Sep 26, 2008 7:17:41 also visually they are different. Dragonborn are good dragon race, humanoid type. While Dragon spawn are not all humanoid. Take blue spawn, they are quadruped creatures, green spawn are more reptilian. and as average stats, spawn are less intelligent and more bestial than the dragonborn. But they have to compensate great power and strength

Here are the PCs thinking they can deal honorably with this reptilian looking fellow, and he stabs them in the back and sells them into slavery!

-Eh, I'd be careful with that. I had someone betray the PCs in my game, and now one of the players is paranoid, and wants to kill everyone. It doesn't help that he seems to exhibit paranoid and psychotic tendencies, but...

A few of them already have. They're right there in the 4E Monster Manual, and I would assume more are to come in the future. Visually they're basically the same as they were in 3rd edition.
