Ack! I haven't read it (and don't really plan to), but I can't say I'm terribly surprised. But I completely agree that Innovindil seemed like RAS's intention for a Drizzt soulmate. And I liked that angle also, it seemed appropriate to me, somehow.

May I just chip in and say that I would have liked to see more interaction between Alustriel and Drizz't rather then Cattie-Brie? I still perfer the original Crystal Shard Triology over the rest of th Drizz't Novels.

I have to admit, I was much more fond of the idea of a relationship between Drizzt and Alustriel than I was with Cattie-Brie... I found myself hoping she got crushed in an avalanche as I muddled through those books so many years ago...

Oh, and before LK mentions it, there's no ' in Drizzt, but keep doing it anyway, since it drives him nuts. :D

Agreed. And, thanks for starting a thread on this.

Regarding a pairing of Alustriel and Drizzt--I really, really doubt Drizzt would enjoy that in the long run, at least if we're going by Ed Greenwood's conception of Alustriel. We are talking about a woman who takes many lovers and holds (and participates in) palace orgies. Everything Drizzt has said on the subject of romantic love suggests he wants to have a "one true love" that he can settle down with, not have an "open relationship."

I believe in an a world where there is indeed a god, he (or she) would NEVER let Drizzt breed.

Besides, have you seen the pics in the books comparing Drow to other races? They're tiny!

Which means that their... accoutrements... are also small. Probably why Drow males are always so godamn ornery, and why the females are all so frustrated. :D

Or do you think they sleep with Fiends because Demons are so gosh-darn good-looking?

We all know how that worked for Sonny Bono. If I recall correctly, there was a scene with the other Elves discovering her and her fallen mount, and mourning them.

I liked the idea of him with Catti-brie, though when she became a mage I stopped liking it . Drizzt and Alustriel could be a better long-term idea, given that she is ageless... ;) but she's not much into romantic love, as opposed to Catti. Innovidil? I simply can't imagine Drizzt with her... a surface elf :P .
AFAIK Alustriel is dead now (The Orc King time) so it's of no cosequence. And Catti is dead too, so he'll stay alone...

The size of a man's "accoutrements" often have nothing to do with his physical size. Big shoes often just mean big shoes, if you get my meaning. :P

In any case, as a woman... let me just say that men are -far- more worried and obsessive about this sort of thing than women. Seriously. There are SO many more important things than physical size, like technique and personal character. Size is interesting to us maybe for a minute or two, and only then as "whoa, geez!" sort of way. And there's a point where size becomes problematic. And I'm not just saying this as an ego-assuaging thing for anyone who isn't gigantic. Most women really, really, really do not care. Unless it's too big, and then we care about preventing pain. There are zillions of other things that are way more fun. Like, you know... paying attention to us!

And with respect to the thread, female drow get their thrills from dominating the situation. Big equipment is what -they- have, in the sense of control over sexual situations. They're on top, literally and figuratively, and in the real world when that's the case... there's zero discussion of male size. ;)

To paraphrase Freud, people should pay more attention to the cigar.

As a Construction Worker, I know 'technique' is far more important then what 'tool' you use...

But having the right tool for the job doesn't exactly hurt, either. ;)

Well, Cattie Brie did wind-up going back to Wulfgar, so quite obviously Drizzt didn't 'measure-up' to her expectations.

Oh, I think Alustriel is "romantic", but not nearly in the same sense that Drizzt is (that is, she doesn't appear to want to commit herself intimately to only one person, for the duration of that person's life).

Innovidil? I simply can't imagine Drizzt with her... a surface elf. :P

I don't know, I thought they had good chemistry. Also, Innovidil lost her previous lover in the Hunter's Blades trilogy, so it seemed almost as if RAS was setting her up to become Drizzt's new paramour (newly single lady helps Drizzt in his time of hardship...we all know how stories often go from there).

I do not know...I do not want drow pairing with surface elves regularly, but for the exceptions, I do not see as big of a taboo as others may.

Deep inside, most male drow have a hatred for female drow. Maybe the whip makes them look 'nice' and all, but isn't Vhaeraun kind of an indicator that many men view females as...well, too domineering in drow society? So, taking that perspective into consideration, someone who bypasses the typical racial apathy toward a surface elf is not beyond being attracted to them. Of course, for the more vile drow, it is not as much as attraction as seeing it as a game of domination.

Now, I cannot speak for the surface elf. The vast majority of them, by all right, should not be attracted to drow. But then...why are some women attracted to those badass criminals in jail and sending them 'love letters', no matter how low they might be? There are so many things wrong in the real world. Oh well.

I digress... When I first read the trilogy, I personally did wish Drizzt settled with an elf over Catti-Brie. However, considering how much they went thorugh, it seemed reasonable at that time I came to think about it.

Drizzt will be living a lone life for a long time, regardless. With the changes to drow, such as the idea that there is even a less likely chance for them to get redeemed in 4.0 (not going to crowd this post with my opinion on that), I anticipate this will drastically increase the prejudice toward them. Many elves (who Drizzt seems to spend more time with lately) and even non-elves will think that the 20% that Eilistraee 'freed' are the only redeemable ones, thus will likely be more smite happy than before. But then, that is my opinion.

EDIT: As a side note, I could see him pair up with a female Eilistraean if they are not...well, too domineering. I think if an Eilistraean came up to him and acted too 'down-talking', it will wake up some old drow instincts and it will become an awkward moment for them. What do I mean by that? Well, something like this...

Female drow: :::Sees Drizzt and thinks, "Ooh! Thank Eilistraee for sending me a nice toy!":::

Drizzt: :::Is thinking, "Oh no! A matron mother!":::

Female drow: Come over here, male.

Drizzt: ::: Draws out his scimitars and shows upright refusal:::

AS for healing in a RAS novel - I get the impression he doesn't like D&D healing - it gets in the way of his stories.

Kinda makes sense - the novels would suck (worse) if characters could res; think about it. No fear of death and you wouldn't get drawn into the story as much.

Reminds of a MORPG - I asked my son once (after his umpteenth attempt at something) would he really go charging into an armed camp full of Orcs by himself if he couldn't res in the game?

He just looked at me like I was speaking the ultimate evil. :D

You know, I understand this point thoroughly. This is not that clerics should not have any ability to heal people, even heal scars, but this should be handled with care. See, healing, resurrection, etc., if I am not mistaken, was meant to make up for the times people get bad luck or simply need to complete a storyline going on in a game. With novels, it destroys the quasi-realism in a story. Thus, in novels, resurrections and being thoroughly healed should be rare.

I respect people's views about the irony of the situation, and being a person who has been involved in multiplayer games, I would be frustrated too if people kept leaving their characters scarred for life. However, in novels, the fighting is likely nowhere near as much as fighting in a multiplayer game. Also, should scars (or any permanent damage) be removed through healing, it should be done as a special event in a novel to make a meaningful story, not because of a creative license.

When I was part of long-running campaign years ago, my co-DM and I discussed this, and we made it so that healing wasn't as 'quick & easy' as it appeared in the rules.

Characters would have limps, and scars, and whatever else we could think of, that would have long-term effects on the game, and make them think twice about 'stupid heroics', and just charging in, knowing the cleric is right behind them with his heal spells.

There was great comic in Dragon magazine (back when it was a REAL magazine), where they had a scroll of resurrection and the party was locked in a dungeon. They hacked the poor dwarf into teeny-tiny piecs, and slid him under the door, and then ressurected him on the other side.

Tell me that anyone would allow that to happen to them in RL?

Another cool thing is placing a culture that values it's scars in the game. In the Larry Niven novels, the Kzin are a giant, cat-like race that are proud warriors, and they earn their names by the number of battle-scars they have. One is put into a 'rejuv' process against his will, and he is made 'young again', minus all his scars.

He was so angry he wanted to kill the thing that did that to him - he was now just another nameless nobody.

Another thing - having worked on the Drow in the Elven Netbook, I know that they are the only sub-race to fully embrace bio-tech (false limbs), because their priests aren't really concerned with healing... at all. They have to depend on Arcane means of replacing lost body parts - something surface Elves needn't really worry about.

Just some random thoughts - sorry that it was OT. :embarrass

-Novels don't have to follow the rules to the exact specifics 100%. The various Drizzt books are perfect examples of that, and the various "side effects" of healing spells that R.A. Salvatore writes are just a single issue where he 'ignores' the rules. I bear no grudges against him for doing this, and feel that he should: He is writing prose based on the Forgotten Realms setting, not Dungeons & Dragons.

-I know in my own games, I sometimes mention healing spells leaving side effects, like a brief limb, or discoloration, or things to that effect.

You know, its funny, but I've never included any 'rules' for healing and how it isn't entirely effective, but my players went and did it to themselves anyway... I for the most part went along with it, since I didn't have an issue with it either way, but it never really hit me on a conscious level that they were doing it until now.

Drizzt is never going to settle down with a woman. They all end up dieing anyway before he is able to get anywhere with them. The only time DRizzt is going to get a girl is when he is ready to retire from his adventuring carrier: an event I do not foresee anytime soon.

Azoun IV and Filfaeril, most definitely. Cadderly Bonaduce and Danica; Mirt the Moneylender and Asper. I'd like to think Danilo and Arilynn are settled down somewhere. And you have Tristan and Robyn, Mourngrym and Shaerl, heck, Aumry and Syluné, even Erevis had settled down as well.
