| #1darthsaculJun 08, 2008 10:46:34 | So for the last 4 days I have been reading over all of the new 4e books (3 of those days I had to spend in my local comic shop reading them since while I am great friends with the owner he wouldnt sell me the book, but he would let me set there and read them), this coming friday night (6/14) I will be running my groups 1st 4e game. I like to run my game like episodes of a TV show where something unforseen happens in the last few moments of gameplay so everyone is excited for the next week. That being said I want Drizzt to come into play at the end of that game session (prehaps help fight the last boss mob or something along those lines) but after reading all the books it seems almost impossible (with the rules we have up to this point) to do such a thing. Can anyone out there help me out a bit? Im not asking for a full pre-built Drizzt (although if you did that I would definatly look at it) but just some idea about what to do about twinkle and icingdeath and what class he should be. Prehaps fighter 10 Ranger 6? Since there is nolonger a Barb. |
| #2GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 11:39:08 | There's no longer that sort of multiclassing, either. Making him a Ranger 17 should cover things, though. You can either write him out as a full-fledged PC, or write him up as a 'monster'. I've actually been writing him up as a PC, already. Here's what I got so far. DRIZZT DO’URDEN DROW RANGER 17 STR: 13 (+1), CON: 15 (+2), DEX: 20 (+5), INT: 17 (+3), WIS: 17 (+3), CHA: 14 (+2) ARMOR CLASS: 33, FORT DEFENSE: 21, REF DEFENSE: 25, WILL DEFENSE: 21 INITIATIVE: +6, SPEED: 6 Squares HIT POINTS: 117, BLOODIED: 58, HEALING SURGE: 29, SURGES PER DAY: 8 SIZE: Medium, VISION: Darkvision RACIAL FEATURES: Trance, Lolthtouched (Cloud of Darkness, Darkfire) RANGER CLASS FEATURES: Fighting Style (Two-Blade Fighting Style), Hunter’s Quarry, Prime Shot LANGUAGES: Common, Elven SKILLS: Acrobatics +13, Arcana +11, Bluff +10, Diplomacy +10, Endurance +10, Heal +11, History +11, Insight +11, Intimidate +10, Religion +11, Streetwise +10, Thievery +13 TRAINED SKILLS: Athletics +14, Dungeoneering +16, Nature +16, Perception +16, Stealth +20 FEATS: Armor Proficiency (Chainmail), Armor Specialization (Chainmail), Combat Reflexes, Defensive Mobility, Fleet-Footed, Improved Initiative, Quick Draw, Toughness, Two-Weapon Defense, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (Heavy Blades) EQUIPMENT: +4 Forgemail, Icingdeath (+3 Frost Scimitar) |
| #3suin_bahhar_02Jun 08, 2008 12:02:05 | Woa. Nice. He should take the scimitar dance feat and heavy blade opportunity though. Otherwise he'd be kinda weak with his scimitar attacks. |
| #4darthsaculJun 08, 2008 12:04:07 | I really like what you have done so far, that was very much along the same lines I was screwing around with in my head. Icingdeath seems about right, but I still have no idea what we are going to do about Twinkle unless either A you just make a House Rule that Defender is still around, or B I have missed something in the books that addresses this problem. |
| #5GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 12:04:50 | Woa. Nice. He should take the scimitar dance feat and heavy blade opportunity though. Otherwise he'd be kinda weak with his scimitar attacks. True, but unfortunately, he doesn't meet the prerequisites for either. They need Str 15 and he's got Str 13. Fast Runner would also be a good one for him. If he wasn't listed as having Mithral Chainmail in the books, I would've gone for Hide Armor instead and dropped those two Chainmail related Feats. I really like what you have done so far, that was very much along the same lines I was screwing around with in my head. Icingdeath seems about right, but I still have no idea what we are going to do about Twinkle unless either A you just make a House Rule that Defender is still around, or B I have missed something in the books that addresses this problem. Well, Adventurer's Vault comes out in September. So hopefully it'll have rules for Defender weapons. Til then, I'd simply houserule Twinkle as a +2 Magic Scimitar which also counts as a Heavy Shield (I.E. Provides a +2 bonus to AC and Reflex Defense). |
| #6suin_bahhar_02Jun 08, 2008 12:09:04 | Then change his intelligence with str. Inteliigence is a useless stat now anyway. Those feats scream Drizzt-clone to me. And a +1 from strength on his attacks with scimmies is really weak. |
| #7GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 12:11:20 | You could do that. I'm trying to stick as close as possible to his 3E stats, though. I even went so far as to make a list of the Skills he had Skill Points in, as well as a list of the Feats he had, and find the closest 4E translations of them. |
| #8darthsaculJun 08, 2008 12:15:55 | With Drizzt being on the cover of the FRCG I am sure we will get "offical" stats for him in August when that book launches (god how long that wait will be lol) but I have to agree that the Scimitar dance feat screams Drizzt, and taking a step back from the 3e stats and looking at Drizzt through the eyes of RAS and the books Drizzt is a pretty strong character. While he obviously favors finese over brute strength a 15 str doesnt really seem like that much (if any) of a stretch JMO ofcourse |
| #9GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 12:25:19 | With Drizzt being on the cover of the FRCG He's not on the cover. That image is just a placeholder. THIS is the cover. As for his stats, alright, then. Let's drop his Int two points and increase his Str two points, and drop the Chainmail Feats as well (giving him Hide Armor, instead). That'd give us... DRIZZT DO’URDEN DROW RANGER 17 STR: 15 (+2), CON: 15 (+2), DEX: 20 (+5), INT: 15 (+2), WIS: 17 (+3), CHA: 14 (+2) ARMOR CLASS: 32, FORT DEFENSE: 21, REF DEFENSE: 25, WILL DEFENSE: 21 INITIATIVE: +6, SPEED: 7 Squares HIT POINTS: 117, BLOODIED: 58, HEALING SURGE: 29, SURGES PER DAY: 8 SIZE: Medium, VISION: Darkvision RACIAL FEATURES: Trance, Lolthtouched (Cloud of Darkness, Darkfire) RANGER CLASS FEATURES: Fighting Style (Two-Blade Fighting Style), Hunter’s Quarry, Prime Shot LANGUAGES: Common, Elven SKILLS: Acrobatics +13, Arcana +10, Bluff +10, Diplomacy +10, Endurance +10, Heal +11, History +10, Insight +11, Intimidate +10, Religion +10, Streetwise +10, Thievery +13 TRAINED SKILLS: Athletics +15, Dungeoneering +16, Nature +16, Perception +16, Stealth +20 FEATS: Combat Reflexes, Defensive Mobility, Fleet-Footed, Heavy Blade Opportunity, Improved Initiative, Quick Draw, Scimitar Dance, Toughness, Two-Weapon Defense, Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus (Heavy Blades) EQUIPMENT: +4 Darkhide Armor, Icingdeath (+3 Frost Scimitar) |
| #10sfdragonJun 08, 2008 12:32:14 | ecl is gone, and we never found out his lvls after the hunter's blades. 100 years afterwards he would have gained atleast 3 lvls puting him in epic |
| #11darthsaculJun 08, 2008 12:36:34 | ecl is gone, and we never found out his lvls after the hunter's blades. thats a great point, with the ECL gone, it seems to me that he would have went from 16 to 18 (since the drow had a ECL of 2) |
| #12GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 12:37:45 | ecl is gone That wouldn't affect anything. He was 17th level because he was 17th level. Not because they wanted him to be the equivalent of a 19th or 20th level character. and we never found out his lvls after the hunter's blades. True, but a simple conversion is easiest at the moment. Levels can be added to that, afterwards. |
| #13fire_wraithJun 08, 2008 12:40:58 | There is also some speculation, following the release of the last of the Lady Penitent novels, that... Show ...Drizzt may have brown skin and black hair now. This is entirely speculative, as nothing was directly mentioned about him. However, at the end of the book, all of the good-aligned/inclined Drow are redeemed by the undoing of the high magic that bound them to the Faerzress, and made them Drow. They then turn back into (surface) Dark Elves. All the remaining Drow are pretty much left to Lolth's clutches. Thus, it would seem to reason that Drizzt is likely among the transformed. |
| #14GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 12:45:26 | It doesn't appear so. From the prelude to The Orc King (which occures in the 4E Realms)... The drow’s long, thick white hair blew in the late afternoon breeze “Perhaps,” Drizzt replied, and in the blink of an astonished eye, he brought his scimitars out in his black-skinned hands. |
| #15sfdragonJun 08, 2008 12:54:41 | yeah, however it also mentions only in the silver marches in there too, which has me thinking that the fate of non evil drow were not discussed with everybody. for the moment consider both |
| #16GreenKnightJun 08, 2008 13:32:06 | I whipped this up a moment ago. SHIELDING WEAPON Weapon: Heavy Blade, Light Blade Enhancement: Attack rolls and damage rolls Critical: +1d6 damage per plus Property: This weapon provides a shield bonus that you add to your AC and your Reflex Defense equal to the weapons enhancement bonus. The bearer must be proficient with the weapon in order to gain this bonus. No GP value, but unnecessary. So Twinkle would be a +2 Shielding Scimitar, which does +2 to hit, +2 to damage, +2d6 on criticals, and grants Drizzt a +2 shield bonus to AC and Reflex Defense. And there you go. |
| #17darthsaculJun 08, 2008 13:47:43 | Very nice, I will definatly be using that for my Drizzt |
| #18lord_karsusJun 08, 2008 15:33:38 | It doesn't appear so. From the prelude to The Orc King (which occures in the 4E Realms)... -Well, I guess Drizzt's soul is utterly irredeamable, as per all of the Lady Penitent stuff... ![]() |
| #19rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 08, 2008 16:37:00 | -Well, I guess Drizzt's soul is utterly irredeamable, as per all of the Lady Penitent stuff... I find it hilarious that Drizzt is not "one of the saved", according to the LP trilogy. ![]() |
| #20darthsaculJun 08, 2008 19:52:35 | I just cannot wait until the book comes out in August so we will find out for sure about the offical stats, for now I will just base my version on the one posted here. |
| #21lord_karsusJun 09, 2008 10:43:08 | I find it hilarious that Drizzt is not "one of the saved", according to the LP trilogy. -You and me both. I just cannot wait until the book comes out in August so we will find out for sure about the offical stats, for now I will just base my version on the one posted here. -Most of the "famous" NPCs aren't going to have official stats. Drizzt is one I'd consider "famous". |
| #22darthsaculJun 09, 2008 11:52:55 | Since I havent been around the D&D boards very long I will believe it when you say that many of the "famous" character stats wont be in the 4e FR, but why on earth would they do that? Characters like Drizzt and Elminster are two of the most famous characters that have been in D&D, and since books are still being made about each and both are still in the lime light why would they leave them out? |
| #23rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 09, 2008 12:36:22 | Since I havent been around the D&D boards very long I will believe it when you say that many of the "famous" character stats wont be in the 4e FR, but why on earth would they do that? Characters like Drizzt and Elminster are two of the most famous characters that have been in D&D, and since books are still being made about each and both are still in the lime light why would they leave them out? Actually no--the designers don't want these characters to be in the limelight, as they believe having NPCs in the limelight was putting people off the setting. Don't know about Drizzt, but Rich said Elminster will probably get some very basic stats (ie. name, class, level), and that's it. |
| #24zaeshirJun 09, 2008 12:51:56 | -Most of the "famous" NPCs aren't going to have official stats. Drizzt is one I'd consider "famous". Well it's possible that stats will appear via DDI. I do think you are right in that they wont show up in the published books. |
| #25darthsaculJun 09, 2008 12:52:47 | FR has been (as far as myself and many others I know) the marquee setting, and thats all because of the rich history of characters like Drizzt, Wulfgar, Elminster and others, they are a part of the FR, now I understand that its 100 (I believe thats what I read) years later but elves live for a rather long time, and wizards as powerful as Elminster should be around, not having these characters in the world would be a travisty! |
| #26rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 09, 2008 13:11:52 | FR has been (as far as myself and many others I know) the marquee setting, and thats all because of the rich history of characters like Drizzt, Wulfgar, Elminster and others, they are a part of the FR, now I understand that its 100 (I believe thats what I read) years later but elves live for a rather long time, and wizards as powerful as Elminster should be around, not having these characters in the world would be a travisty! I totally agree with you that the NPCs help make the setting special. However, I explained why I think it's doubtful that many (if any) NPCs will be getting full state writeups in the forthcoming sourcebooks. |
| #27darthsaculJun 09, 2008 15:49:06 | Please dont get me wrong, I am thankful for your reasoning, and I am not disagreeing with said reasoning, I just hope (and I hate to say this) that your wrong. People like myself and the others who have tried to work out his stats here could continue to do what we have been doing in this thread. Doing what we can, trying to make Drizzt (and his other but maybe less famous counterparts) for our games but without something offical it will always seem a bit off. |
| #28creyzi4zb12Jun 09, 2008 21:54:09 | Drizzt is one of Lloth's minions...he is moving according to her plan (even though he doesn't like it/doesn't know about it)...Remember people, don't judge a book by it's cover. |

Well it's possible that stats will appear via DDI. -Good point. I don't necessarily think so, but one never knows. |

Continue doing what you're doing. Drizzt is one of Lloth's minions...he is moving according to her plan (even though he doesn't like it/doesn't know about it)...Remember people, don't judge a book by it's cover. -According to a fanatic (Cleric) in one book, who might have been right, or might have been wrong. |
| #31Eli_the_TannerJun 09, 2008 23:26:48 | Hey there Green Knight, I hope you don't mind me borrowing what you've done with Drizzt so far and adding some powers/exploits in to round Drizt out. I like what you've done so far, so time to finish what has been started. DRIZZT DO’URDEN DROW RANGER 17 STR: 13 (+1), CON: 15 (+2), DEX: 20 (+5), INT: 17 (+3), WIS: 17 (+3), CHA: 14 (+2) ARMOR CLASS: 33, FORT DEFENSE: 21, REF DEFENSE: 25, WILL DEFENSE: 21 INITIATIVE: +6, SPEED: 6 Squares HIT POINTS: 117, BLOODIED: 58, HEALING SURGE: 29, SURGES PER DAY: 8 SIZE: Medium, VISION: Darkvision RACIAL FEATURES: Trance, Lolthtouched (Cloud of Darkness, Darkfire) RANGER CLASS FEATURES: Fighting Style (Two-Blade Fighting Style), Hunter’s Quarry, Prime Shot STORMWARDEN FEATURES: Blade Storm, Stormstep Action, Twin Blade Storm. UTILITY POWERS Evade Ambush, Evade the Blow, Throw Caution to the Wind, Unbalancing Parry, Undaunted Stride. EQUIPMENT: +4 Forgemail, Icingdeath (+3 Frost Scimitar) I have replaced the feat Armour Specialization(Chainmail) with Uncanny Dodge as I don't believe Drizzt is noted for his use of armour to such a deree. Rather his preternatural ability to avoid attacks that would catch others off guard is remarked upon more often in the books. Please tweak and expand upon where necassary. |
| #32GreenKnightJun 09, 2008 23:36:15 | Not a problem. We also need to pick a Paragon Path for him. I'm also gonna use the NPC rules from the DMG (page 186) to write up a simplified version of him. Probably slap that 'Savage Berserker' template on him to make him an Elite. Hmm. Or maybe I'll build him as a monster, put the Ranger template on him, making him an Elite, then put Savage Berserker on him, making him a Solo. Something to think about. I'm definitely gonna read up on the monster and NPC creation rules more carefully, tomorrow. |
| #33sfdragonJun 10, 2008 3:17:52 | you know his last mini had his str at 18..... pathfinder paragon |
| #34mulaJun 10, 2008 7:38:36 | I find it hilarious that Drizzt is not "one of the saved", according to the LP trilogy. It's simple. Jet black skin is cool, mysterious, ninja-like. Dark brown skin is what real world black people have. Most Drizzt fans are white. Identifying with jet-black-Drizzt is easier than dark-brown-Drizzt. Funny but probably true. I think Drizzt should be statted as a monster. You can get better results, more true to the books. |
| #35Joseph_SilverJun 10, 2008 8:18:10 | Wait, weren't drow black-skinned to begin with? I read about a curse being put on the drow when they were forced underground, turning them black-skinned, but I thought that was just an ingame legend. So which is it? |
| #36suin_bahhar_02Jun 10, 2008 8:50:39 | The drow are the cursed versions of dark elves, which used to have dusky skin and hair ranging from dark to beige-white, which had extensive basaltish and obsisdian holdings in the southern parts of fearun and we're avid demon and anti seldarine worshippers. The curse claimed even those dark elves that held their old favorite seldarine patrons in honor, even those across other parts of the multiverse. The drow descendants of those who uphold the old seldarine ways of Eilistraee and Corellon will get changed if they are willing. Drizzt doesn't honor the ways of the Seldarine (although Kelreshaar/Mieliki is a close friend of the Seldarine) and is out of the loop of most of the dealings of Eilistraeans so he might have not recieved or rightfully interpreted the signs of a way to redemption. |
| #37lord_karsusJun 10, 2008 9:47:56 | -Information about Dark Elves, the Descent, the Banishment of Lolth, and all of that can be found in Elves of Faerûn. |

| #39darthsaculJun 10, 2008 11:23:17 | Maybe we will get a sneak peek at the FR book next month, and hopefully it will have more info on the characters. What they put in the book in regards to NPCs really is going to determine if I buy the FR book for myself or if I just let one of my players buy it. |

| #42darthsaculJun 10, 2008 18:17:03 | Yeah, I dont mind buying the books, but dang man I love FR because of its history, my friends are all about having every book that comes out, I buy certain ones. And if there is no NPC stats in FR, then it wont be one of the certain ones I buy |
| #43traycorJun 10, 2008 19:51:53 | Here are some Drizzt stats that I made a few days ago, so they don't follow what's in this thread. I was more concerned with being true to the books than trying to match his stats from previous editions. Surprisingly, even a lvl 1 ranger can represent Drizzt's cababilities very well. He was built using point-buy for the ability scores, and he is shown at lvls 1, 11, and 20 (imo he would be 20 after the latest novel, but shouldn't be epic). The "Demonslayer" property for Icingdeath was customized based off the "Dragonslayer" weapon property. | #44lord_karsusJun 10, 2008 21:50:42 | -Just to put it out there, Icingdeath doesn't have any special bonuses against Demons. Unless something in The Orc King changed this, of course. |
| #45anguirus23Jun 10, 2008 22:05:48 | ^ Did you *read* The Crystal Shard? Icingdeath one-shotted a balor...while Drizzt was semiconscious. It loathes demons and is astonishingly potent against them. |

| #47Eli_the_TannerJun 10, 2008 22:31:13 | Oh my, the all too familiar Icingdeath debate (part of the larger Drizzt editions debate) again begginning to stir.To clear this one up I will refrain from the greater explanations of how characters like Drizzt(and their associated items) have been changed through the ages. Rather I will leave you an Excerpt from the 1979 edition of the Dungeon Masters Guide and more specifically from the Treasure(swords) section: Sword +3, Frost Brand, +6 vs fire using/dwelling creatures, bestows the +6 bonus in a self-explanatory manner. The weapon does not shed any light, except when the air temperature is below 0 degrees farenheit, but it does give special benefits against fire, for it's wielder is proteced as if he or she is wearing a ring of fire resistance and whenever it is thrust into fires it has a 50% chance of extinguishing themn in a 10' radius - including a wall of fire but excluding a fireball, meteor swarm, or flame strike. So as you can see it is neither that Icingdeath is good against demons(lest they be fire-using/dwelling), artistic license, a lucky critical hit or bad writing but rather simply a change in rules resulting in continuity issues. At the time of writing the Crystal Shard the said Frost Brand weapons were good against Balors but now the rules say they are not, the dichotomy is as simple as that. Phew! That was close, unnecasary debate avoided. |

Reading this post made me dig out my 1st edition and 2nd edition books and look at them again! And as far as logically speaking goes, a weapon that is covered in ice and that can actully deal cold damamge, should be able to put out fire, now the demon thing im not as sold on...but if Balor are "made" of fire then extra damage ho! As far as im concerned. |
| #50traycorJun 11, 2008 18:30:53 | -Artistic license of the Frost power in the blade. Icingdeath is a +3 Frost Scimitar. I don't think Salvatore was ever concerned with the game stats of the blade. He just made a cool magic sword and other people came behind him and tried to lock down it's stats. Besides... Icingdeath has never done frost damage or frozen its enemies except against demons... |

Authors are allowed to use whatever poetic license in their literature...It's their literature. That said, Icingdeath is a +3 Frost Scimitar, officially. |

And that's cool you shouldn't restrain your work because you have foaming-from-their-mouths-fans asking/telling/making stats... |
| #53banpaiJun 12, 2008 8:19:57 | @Traycor : Nice writeup, I like the sword, but the armor is kinda broken since it gives +9 to AC instead of +4 like a normal hide armor. It´s just to much, I would suggest to add a chainshirt as new armor and give it the same stats as a hide armor. I know the wears chain in the books, but in this version of D&D it´s just way more powerfull to count as light armor. If you look at the level 20 version - he can hardly hit himself - thats a pretty good sign that something is not really ok. But other than that great writeup. |

| #55lord_karsusJun 12, 2008 10:56:04 | And that's cool you shouldn't restrain your work because you have foaming-from-their-mouths-fans asking/telling/making stats... -Well, not really. There's the sandbox analogy. The Forgotten Realms are everyone's (authors/designers) sandbox. You can play, but be nice to everyone else playing. Ignoring lore/stats/etc. doesn't exactly...lend well to that concept. |

That's why I said "foaming-from-their-mouths-fans" I mean there's stuff that shouldn't be ignored "like the clerics need gos for spells" and so on but mechanically speaking I think there should be no restrains like: Well that sword can't be Dragonbane Holy, dancing vorpal cuz it like a +12 and by the rules it can't be more that 10 and even then it must have at least a enchantment of +1 blah blah blah |

| #58ody_saraph_of_karsusJun 12, 2008 12:26:00 | -Both are examples of rules! :P Well, forgive the loss of my military bearing when I go ![]() But you know what I mean tho |
| #59lord_karsusJun 12, 2008 12:28:41 | -Yes, yes. |
| #60Eli_the_TannerJun 12, 2008 19:23:34 | Rules be merely the dressings that our characters and campaigns wear, so as to appear presentable to others. They are as fleeting as the fashions of the time. Try out as many outfits as you can and see which one fits best. Don't let the fashion of the day dictate your campaign or character. But do dress properly whilst among polite society lest they give you a stern dressing down...so to speak. Please excuse my metaphorical mood.... ...and my alliterative apology. |

If you look at the level 20 version - he can hardly hit himself - thats a pretty good sign that something is not really ok. But other than that great writeup. Point taken on the armor. I'm not looking at the rules right now, but I seem to remember glancing through and figuring out that I wasn't giving Drizzt that much of a boost over the amount of AC he could normally have with magical hide (I could be completely wrong through). If it is an inappropriate amount of armor, the plus on the mithral could be lowered to +3. On the flip side though, with his high dex and two weapon defense, he is built for defense. I would fully expect for a character with a build that is weighted towards defense to be a little high on the AC scale. Usually a two weapon ranger would have lots of points in Str by lvl 20, so they would be hitting far more often than lvl 20 Drizzt, but wouldn't be nearly so high on the AC. Basically he has a little more staying power on the front lines than a typical ranger of his lvl, which feels appropriate for the character. |
