| #1ombre101Jul 08, 2008 15:58:18 | I was watching a movie today, and it got me thinking. Why has there never been a Drizzt movie? |
| #2endaliaJul 08, 2008 16:40:39 | Because no one (!!!!!!!!! Not even Supposed God, Jesus, Ishtishia, Io, Moradin, Peter Griffin, GabrielKnight32, Stephen Hawkins or me) could do it justice. It has way too much potential to be made into a movie. And that is very, very sad. Remember that! It is very, very sad. Edit: Bob, Joe, Frank, Mike or Steve won't be able to do it justice either. |
| #3The_White_SorcererJul 08, 2008 17:02:13 | It'd propably be rated K18 (or whatever the corresponding rating is in Whateverland), at least if they were faithful to the fight scenes. |
| #4pigknightJul 08, 2008 17:08:02 | Drizzt stole the spotlight in his first appearance. Drizzt stole the spotlight. He has a show, take your pick: Drizzt Banks or Tyra Do'Urden. |
| #5umbralknightJul 08, 2008 17:23:23 | Can you imagine the fanboyism? Kids plastering their myspace pages with Drizzt? A Drizzt craze on the E channel?! *shudder* If it was a good movie, I would see certainly see it. Its the fallout afterwards that I'd be worried about. |
| #6darkraven18599Jul 09, 2008 2:15:16 | Unfortunately there was another series of books that had been issued by TSR that fans thought had great cinematic potential, Dragonlance Chronicles. Unfortunately, looking at how they managed to butcher up one of my most beloved literary series into a lackluster animated movie, I'll just ask Hollywood to keep their grubby paws off my Dark Elf Trilogy, thank you very much. And besides, who the hell do you cast as Drizzt anyways? (Hoo boy, think I'm opening up a can o'worms here...) Cheers! |
| #7thibbJul 09, 2008 2:19:36 | You are indeed. I have heard some horrible ideas for actors. If they ever did make the Dark Elf series, it would HAVE to be animated. If you think the potential for crappiness would be high with animation, you have no idea of the stinkfest that could occur with live action! |
| #8ADHadhJul 09, 2008 8:01:49 | And besides, who the hell do you cast as Drizzt anyways? Johnny Depp, Samuel L. Jackson or Jack Nicholson :D |
| #9The_White_SorcererJul 09, 2008 8:13:32 | Johnny Depp, Samuel L. Jackson or Jack Nicholson :D Too old. Jack Nick might be fine if you want the old-white-dude Drizzt from some of the book covers. |
| #10Lord_DynelJul 09, 2008 9:26:28 | And besides, who the hell do you cast as Drizzt anyways? I'd have to lend my vote to Ray Park. |
| #11jwtJul 09, 2008 10:03:36 | Because no one (!!!!!!!!! Not even Supposed God, Jesus, Ishtishia, Io, Moradin, Peter Griffin, GabrielKnight32, Stephen Hawkins or me) could do it justice. | #12darkraven18599Jul 09, 2008 10:10:43 | I don't know. I imagine there is someone who could do it justice. Ok, that was officially way freakin' cool. |
| #13lcrollerJul 09, 2008 10:37:07 | Unfortunately there was another series of books that had been issued by TSR that fans thought had great cinematic potential, Dragonlance Chronicles. I think Ray Park could handle the physical requirements, though I wonder about his acting ability. And I would go with Peter Jackson or maybe Brian Singer |
| #14cmcfJul 09, 2008 10:47:49 | I don't know. I imagine there is someone who could do it justice. You got my vote! |
| #15jwtJul 09, 2008 12:33:10 | You got my vote! 'Twern't me - it was done by a couple of guys as a college project. Ben Dai (who now works for Blizzard - OH NOES!!! - Drizz't is MMORG too!) and Bruno Velazquez who did some stuff on God of War 2. |
| #16arderkragJul 09, 2008 12:35:42 | I was watching a movie today, and it got me thinking. Why has there never been a Drizzt movie? Because, as stale as the Drizzt stories are, they would get butchered worse than LOTR. |
| #17tiwaztyrsfistJul 09, 2008 22:14:57 | I liked the video! Yeah, it would get butchered in the same manner as the DL movie. |
| #18ADHadhJul 10, 2008 7:25:01 | I was watching a movie today, and it got me thinking. Why has there never been a Drizzt movie? Maybe because Drizzt is not that popular actually. People in Hollywood make many fantasy movies now, but apart from LotR it's all Narnia and stories similar to it. They're aiming at kids and their parents because there aren't enough nerds to justify making a movie just for them. Hollywood movies are not supposed to be good, they're supposed to be blockbusters! |
| #19arderkragJul 10, 2008 7:47:58 | Hollywood movies are not supposed to be good, they're supposed to be blockbusters! The irony and elitism of the statement is fascinating. |
| #20ADHadhJul 10, 2008 8:45:36 | The irony and elitism of the statement is fascinating. Hey, I was writing my post just after checking this out. I was going to write something about film industry in my country and some stereotypes, but I realized I'm rambling about it too much. |
| #21zombie_babiesJul 10, 2008 9:03:43 | They're aiming at kids and their parents because there aren't enough nerds to justify making a movie just for them. Umm. Starwars called. He said you're dead wrong. Wha? Oh, hang on a sec. It seems Star Trek is on line two and Firefly (Serenity) is on hold. ;) EDIT: Just got a few angry emails from Blade, the X-Men, the Incredble Hulk, Superman, Spiderman, Batman and and ... I give up. You get the idea, no? |
| #22ADHadhJul 10, 2008 9:14:34 | Umm. Starwars called. He said you're dead wrong. Wha? Oh, hang on a sec. It seems Star Trek is on line two and Firefly (Serenity) is on hold. ;) Star Wars were made when things like this were at the top. It was the '70, just after Neil Armstrong provided his famous quote! It's nerd stuff now, but it could be different in the past. I wasn't even planned back then and I know it. When it comes to comic book characters: compare the number of kids who know who Spider-man or Batman is to those that know what a Drow is. Comic books are kiddie stuff, no matter how many geeks will protest. Blade and Punisher? For those who never read any of their comics they're just kickass action movies with a twist, like this Wanted thing today. These two posts are a total waste of on-topic space. |
| #23zombie_babiesJul 10, 2008 9:27:44 | Star Wars were made when things like this were at the top. It was the '70, just after Neil Armstrong provided his famous quote! It's nerd stuff now, but it could be different in the past. I wasn't even planned back then and I know it. They made three prequels to the '70s releases quite a but after ol' Neil took his "small step". It was, is and always will be "nerd stuff", as evidenced by cable networks constantly re-airing said films. And stuff I hate. Star Wars FTL! (Don't kill me, please!) When it comes to comic book characters: compare the number of kids who know who Spider-man or Batman is to those that know what a Drow is. Comic books are kiddie stuff, no matter how many geeks will protest. A Drizzt movie would end up the same way. A legion of hardcore fans and a fantasy - "like Narnia and LoTR!" - kickass action flick that the non-knowledgeable would like. Don't get me wrong, you are correct in your assertion that Drizzt just isn't as popular as Luke Skywalker, Captain Picard, Blade, Wolverine, etc. But he's popular enough and has been around for a good while, now. I shudder to think of the disservice that a movie would do to his story (see the DL movie - vomit in DVD format). I sincerely hope that it never gets made. WotC has proven itself completely inept at marketing the D&D name through quality films - animated or not. Let's hope they stay the hell out. ;) These two posts are a total waste of on-topic space. Nah. It's fun. And we are in the Off-Topic Tavern so we can't be too bad. I mean, how much better can you get than getting off-topic in a thread in an off-topic forum? I think we both deserve a gold star. :D |
| #24ADHadhJul 10, 2008 9:51:34 | A Drizzt movie would end up the same way. Let's hope they stay the hell out. ;) Oh yeah, you've reminded me of something else - there won't be a Drizzt movie any soon, because previous D&D movies were utter crap and things like In the name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale are not helping. I know I said I wouldn't but I couldn't help myself It's just like the Witcher movie in Poland; Geralt is like Drizzt here, with his books insanely popular (though maybe not as much now as they used to be), series of comic books, fanclubs and now a very good computer game, but still probably no one is going to make a movie about him (or anything fantasy) since the last one. Not that modern Polish movies are very good anyway, but The Witcher is the definition of the bottom quality. |
| #25That_Blasted_SomoflangeJul 10, 2008 22:20:33 | While, I admit I am a fan of the Drizzt novels It would be very hard for them to get the casting right for the characters. However, there are a number of actors that could play Drizzt: Ray Park, Doug Jones, Luke Goss The latter two can be seen in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army as Abe Sapien and Prince Nuada (and if you see the fight between Red and Nuada, you'll know why Luke Goss could pull off Drizzt. While, I will hope that one day there will be a Drizzt movie, it will be a while before the right director/producer picks it up. And if it was to be done, I would want it done right or not at all. |
| #26umbralknightJul 11, 2008 7:00:50 | Johnny Depp, Samuel L. Jackson or Jack Nicholson :D You are kidding, right? |
| #27olfactatronJul 11, 2008 8:49:24 | NO movie. HBO original series. The only way to do the extensive saga justice. |
| #28ADHadhJul 11, 2008 11:02:41 | You are kidding, right? If I was serious I would say Ah-nold baby! ;D |
| #29straythJul 11, 2008 13:39:39 | Actually yeah this is surprising. FR is and has been very popular, and movies have been made with more obscure work. |
| #30ombre101Jul 11, 2008 15:12:44 | Actually yeah this is surprising. FR is and has been very popular, and movies have been made with more obscure work. This is what I was thinking. Most of the Driz'zt books were on the Times bestseller list, no? |
| #31xhereticxJul 11, 2008 22:57:25 | Just the fact that the African American community would raise an uproar over the fact that the "black elves" were evil would deter anyone from attempting to make such a film. They even raised a problem when Scar and the "black lions" were evil, and that was in an animated movie! |
| #32bleedingstarJul 12, 2008 1:08:23 | I was watching hellboy 2 and thinking the same thing! He would play an amazing drizzt. I do not know If I would want TSR or dnd touching this movie. Let Wizards put some of our money into this and hire a very good producer, I think that the guy that did hellboy 2 did a damn good job on the movie. But from there I dont know were I would start. I would just let wizards start there OWN movie title and let it fly baby! Wolfgar- Brunner- Regis- Drizzt- Catti-brie Artimius- The hard part would be casting these characters who we all have our own unique vision of how they look, and it will be a failure no matter. BUT IF THEY PULLED IT OFF!!! HOLLY $h#T IT WOULD PUT DND ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL! CAN WE ALL SAY EPIC....Action figures, posters, tshirts, lunch pails, sweaters, hats, shoes, gwen stuffed animals, toy swords, hammers, axes, shields, daggers, bows and arrows, and a little red medallion all dedicated to this great series, lotr was gr8! but i cant even imagine the scale of this if it was done RIGHT! i ASK one thing do the thing right or do not touch it! |
| #33ombre101Jul 14, 2008 1:37:35 | I'll probably be flamed for this, but I'll say it anyway. Could Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian) pull it off? He's a decent swordsman, but there's a lot more to Drizzt than sword fighting, and he's a good actor. |
| #34calronmoonflowerJul 14, 2008 1:43:51 | Just the fact that the African American community would raise an uproar over the fact that the "black elves" were evil would deter anyone from attempting to make such a film. Or they can change the coloring of the drow. |
| #35spoonmanxJul 14, 2008 2:10:50 | Michael Jai White (SPAWN) would make an awesome Drizz't! He's one of the best martial artists on the planet and has the right build. PS Mark DeCoscos (sp??) would make a great Artemis (brotherhood of the wolf) |
| #36Narf_the_MouseJul 14, 2008 7:23:12 | I want to see this theoretical movie, right now. Drizzt is teh awesum. And the Drizzt/Entreri fights, if done right, would totally rock. But, a lot of black/brown-skinned people will have a problem with it - And quite frankly, the whole 'Drow = cursed with black skin' thing bothers me, and I'm pink-skinned. I can understand and agree with the problem there and I think there needs to be a fix. Making drow dark purple would help, but it doesn't really fix the innate problem. |
| #37bleedingstarJul 14, 2008 11:17:12 | I am pretty sure that they were marked for yes what they did and evelutuion of the race in the underdark. There are black knomes, and dwarfs. Also if they only do the icewind dale series and thats it. You dont need to adress the issue. I have not read those books in awhile, are there flashbacks? You dont have to explain were he comes from only thing you have to do is have the character. I could be wrong. |
| #38_jayne_cobb_Jul 14, 2008 15:46:55 | If they were to make a Drizzt film the should cast the lead cos he is good, not cos he is of African descent. Casting a "black" human as Drizzt for that reason alone is as stupid, pointless - and borderline racist - as casting a Chinese actor as Homer Simpson cos he's "yellow". There are no black humans, just as there are no truly white, yellow or red ones either. Drow are black, not brown. Cast the actor cos he works in the role, not cos of where he or his ancestors originated. |
| #39Narf_the_MouseJul 14, 2008 17:26:03 | There are, IIRC, people who's skin is actually black. It's just not that common, even in Africa. |
| #40lord_karsusJul 14, 2008 19:51:02 | -This thread belongs in the Forgotten Realms section. I'll be recommending it be moved. |
| #41shamurai7Jul 14, 2008 21:22:34 | i wholly agree the dude from hellboy 2 would be awesome....! and prince caspien would not be a bad choice either.........artemis entreri the guy from brotherhood of the wolf would be a great.... either way hollywood is to stupid to make a movie like this... they would rather produce the garbage they normally produce. a rare gem of a movie comes out once or twice a year and thats it. |
| #42steerpike7Jul 14, 2008 21:39:04 | Samuel L. Jackson should play Drizz't. Orc: *shaking in fear* How do I know which one of these bags is yours? Drizz't: It's the one that says Bad M***F*** on it. |
| #43Narf_the_MouseJul 14, 2008 22:27:32 | That does not sound like Drizzt. At all. |
| #44steerpike7Jul 14, 2008 22:32:18 | *hands Narf a copy of Pulp Fiction and surgically implantable sense of humor* |
| #45ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 15, 2008 7:45:09 | Because no one (!!!!!!!!! | #47nymrohdJul 15, 2008 7:54:27 | Take note that the color of the skin is nothing important; it can be changed for a movie with absurd ease. The facial bone structure though is important and people expect elves with a structure closest to that of caucasians. And seriously Drizzt is really not that famous. Bestseller list really does not mean that much. |
| #48steerpike7Jul 15, 2008 9:05:34 | And seriously Drizzt is really not that famous. Bestseller list really does not mean that much. Pretty well-known amongst the type of people who would go see a fantasy movie. I know a lot of people who've never played D&D (or even come close to playing it) who have read the Drizz't books and know the character. |
| #49lord_karsusJul 15, 2008 9:41:36 | -Drizzt. No apostrophe. |
| #50steerpike7Jul 15, 2008 9:52:52 | -Drizzt. No apostrophe. Good point. The apostrophe is in the last name, right? |
| #51lord_karsusJul 15, 2008 9:58:15 | -Yes. Drizzt Do'Urden. |
| #52woobyluvJul 15, 2008 12:07:44 | NO movie. HBO original series. The only way to do the extensive saga justice. I could get on board with this idea ![]() |
| #53nymrohdJul 15, 2008 12:16:22 | I'd give a leg for a Wheel of Time HBO series. . . heck I'd throw a hand as well. But honestly Drizzt would get boring really fast. |
| #54steerpike7Jul 15, 2008 12:41:42 | I'd give a leg for a Wheel of Time HBO series. . . heck I'd throw a hand as well. If we're going fantasy epics I'd go for GRR Martin and Steven Erikson before WoT, although WoT could be cool if done right. |
| #55nymrohdJul 15, 2008 12:45:49 | I don't know I think WoT is the most popular series of the three. Erikson is amazing but he is not reader-friendly, someone new to fantasy would just quit the books. Martin I also love but I still find Jordan's characters the most endearing of them all. As for Drizzt I'd just rather see him dead. His character development is so slow it is virtually non-existant. |
| #56trayaJul 16, 2008 3:37:57 | A bigger question would be , which part of the books do you start the movie at. Should it be one movie? A trilogy? Should it start with the birth of Drizzt? Or the Icewindale trilogy? Call me insane but ending a trilogy with The Halflings Gem seems kind of anti climatic in epicness. |
| #57akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 3:49:00 | Who cares about Drizzt. Make a Jarlaxle movie with Samuel L Jackson as Jarlaxle. He would own Drizzt just being Samuel L Jackson but as Jarlaxle he would been that much cooler. |
| #58akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 3:52:20 | Just the fact that the African American community would raise an uproar over the fact that the "black elves" were evil would deter anyone from attempting to make such a film. Yeah nevermind that James Earl Jones was Mufasa's father. Such morons those crybabies were. |
| #59umbralknightJul 16, 2008 6:17:05 | Yeah nevermind that James Earl Jones was Mufasa's father. James Earl was Mufassa, who was Simba's father. Sorry... I'm a bit of a Lin King fascist... In other news, if they did this movie, I would not suggest traditional live action. Actors like Samuel Jackson just don't look like drow. All the make up in the world couldn't make Samuel Jackson, or any other "A list" hollywood actor look like one. I would suggest that they do it like Beowulf. Except, y'know, good. That would take the looks/physicality of the actors out of the picture entirely, and leave it up the acting. For Drizzt, I would suggest Daniel Day Lews. Not at all if it were live action, but if it were done ala Beowulf then it becomes purely an issue of acting and not of appearance, so he's the best I can think of the represent Drizzt on those grounds. |
| #60jwtJul 16, 2008 9:35:08 | If we're going fantasy epics I'd go for GRR Martin and Steven Erikson before WoT, although WoT could be cool if done right. GRR Martin may actually get an HBO series. It has been proposed, but may not get off the ground.... [EDIT] Hey look. They just turned in a second draft. So it marches forward! |
| #61bleedingstarJul 16, 2008 13:12:15 | Samuel L. Is an awesome actor but he has been over used, I think that Denziel Washington in a movie like this would be better ( Training day/American Gangster) he would play a better oprotunist. Samuel L Jackson plays guys that are very vocal (Coach Carter, Shaft, and all of his other movies) he is great actor just not how I would portray Jaraxle. It would be almost as bad as giving the role to Snipes. Were to start is probally more of the complication. Harry potter is doing all 7 movies, so I do not see why they could not do the entire Legend Of Drizzt, Excluding the a couple of the books just to shorten it up. I KNOW I am comitting blasphemy here but you could leave out some of the books i dont know what but do the entire legend in 7-9 movies. With a couple yrs between. BUT ARG I could see why this has not happend yet. ITS COMPLICATED AND IT WOULD MAKE A LOT OF PEOPLE UPSET IF THEY BLEW IT UP LIKE THE D&D MOVIES! |
| #62stmaliceJul 16, 2008 15:31:07 | NO movie. HBO original series. The only way to do the extensive saga justice. YES!! Absolutely. And at a time when I thought no one could really pull off Drizz't, after seeing Hellboy 2, Luke Goss is it, could do it better than most. He even had the facial expressions I've always imagined him having. Or have him play Artemis and Michael Jai White play Drizz't. Wulgar? Since there wouldn't be much dialog here, I think former world strongman Magnus ver Magnusson play him. Not muscle bound, but large to pull it off. Bruenor? you'd have to go the same special fx route Peter Jackson went, using a solid actor with a strong frame and distinct accent. I think an HBO series would be incredible move on their part. Do the Crystal Shard series on HBO. If it has great success. Then you can take Drizz't to the big screen. They have to be serious about it. Those of us who play the game and take it as something fun, but serious too, want something we can hang our hat on. And say see, SEE how friggin' cool this is?!? |
| #63lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 15:31:53 | -Drizzt. No apostrophe. |
| #64akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 16:45:26 | I completely disagree that Samuel L Jackson could not pull of Jarlaxle or look like a drow. BS. He really just needs some realistic looking pointed ears and the right eye color contacts. He doesn't need all this other junk like needing to be super thin, ect. If your gonna whine about all the extras then it will never be done. He can definitely pull off Jarlaxles smooth fast talking, scheming attitude. |
| #65steerpike7Jul 16, 2008 17:04:28 | I don't know I think WoT is the most popular series of the three. As for Drizzt I'd just rather see him dead. His character development is so slow it is virtually non-existant. Wheel of Time is probably a little more popular, but I was just stating my own preference. I prefer GRR Martin to Robert Jordan. Jordan's characters are cool but they also aggravate me in that the seem to take certain actions simply to extend the plot. Martin's characters are great, but you never know who is going to be around in the next chapter There's one in particular who will really irk me if dead at any point... |
| #66faraerJul 16, 2008 17:18:12 | Give me Guy Gavriel Kay over either of those guys. |
| #67lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 18:08:45 | -Give me a cartoon over all of those guys... |
| #68akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 18:10:34 | Why? So they can make something like the Dragonlance movie again? Ugh. |
| #69lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 18:11:17 | Why? So they can make something like the Dragonlance movie again? Ugh. -No, because Humans =/= Elves (Drow). And, that's that. The only way they can properly be captured is via animation. |
| #70akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 18:14:46 | Uh huh. Tell that to Peter Jackson. He did elves in Lord of the Rings just fine. Sorry but that is not that. It can be done with people. An animated movie will merely be more crap to laugh at and to not to not speak of and basically pretend it doesn't exist. And THAT is definitely that. |
| #71lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 18:18:24 | Tell that to Peter Jackson. He did elves in Lord of the Rings just fine. -Okay, that's nice. Elves in Lord of the Rings =/= Elves in Faerûn. |
| #72akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 18:22:11 | Nice strawman. If your referring to height I refer you to the hobbits. |
| #73lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 18:27:44 | -WotC doesn't have a multimillion dollar budget, either. -Can't defend your claims, so you make fallacious statements. Nice. ![]() |
| #74bleedingstarJul 16, 2008 18:41:05 | How do you see Jaraxle? A opprotunist, sly, and sneek. CHAOS, pure and utter chaos. It follows in his wake. why do you think he is able to survive in the underdark for so long as a male. I do not doubt that Jackson might be able to do it. I am saying that I think that there could be a actor that could do better. To add more, I can not remember what book it is but he poses as Drizzt in a region were Drizzt is known and pulls it off. so they would have to get two actors that were "similar" in ht, build, and look. Personally I see Jackson as a mentor figure. And he plays it very well. Also Jaraxle is mobile, Jackson is not. aka return of the sith with the not so athletic lightsaber fight. And in this I dont think that Denzel could even pull it off. Just because we see Samuel L jackson in a eye patch at the end of Ironman does not mean a thing. I would rather not debate about the characters because I could talk about this until I am blue in the face, but I would rather know if anyone out there knows if this is in the making. I googled it and saw somthing saying that Dreamworks was working on somthing but that was like 3-4 years ago. |
| #75lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 18:42:29 | I would rather not debate about the characters because I could talk about this until I am blue in the face, but I would rather know if anyone out there knows if this is in the making. | #76bleedingstarJul 16, 2008 18:43:08 | -WotC doesn't have a multimillion dollar budget, either. |
| #77akumadaimyoJul 16, 2008 19:10:53 | -WotC doesn't have a multimillion dollar budget, either. Just like you really can't back up live actors not being able to do it. And no, it's not a fallacious statement. It's indeed a strawman. You think live people could not be elves and you try to win based on that and it is untrue. Live people could indeed be dark elves and do a decent job of it. |
| #78lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 21:07:40 | Just like you really can't back up live actors not being able to do it. And no, it's not a fallacious statement. It's indeed a strawman. It's not that difficult. Bone structure, physiology, anatomy...Only some kind of animation can capture this properly. Samuel Jackson, or Denzel Washington, or Will Smith, or some of the other names being brought up, none of these individuals appear remotely Elven, makeup or not. Pointy ears does not an Elf make. |
| #79akumadaimyoJul 17, 2008 0:52:09 | Yes, it can. There are indeed people who can pull off elves. Howeve,r I would also suggest you stop expecting things to be 100% accurate. Your the guy who would expect Juggernaught in the X-men movie to have been played by someone actually the size of Juggy in the comics. Dude just deal with it. They don't need to have the exact same bone structure and all. |
| #80naexJul 17, 2008 1:13:01 | Yes, it can. There are indeed people who can pull off elves. Howeve,r I would also suggest you stop expecting things to be 100% accurate. They don't need to have the exact same bone structure and all. Juggy in the movie was an abomination... He isn't even a mutant, his powers were mystical... As for the Drizzt movie... It'll never happen, too much potential for controversy. If you use the drow as they are in D&D, you will be attacked for racism, think of the fallout caused by Jar Jar. If you change his color, then you lose his distinctiveness as being an obvious member of an evil race and his, and his friends, having to overcome that fact. And of course the fanboys will scream if he isn't done by the book. |
| #81akumadaimyoJul 17, 2008 1:22:30 | Juggy in the movie was an abomination... He isn't even a mutant, his powers were mystical... I never said I liked Juggy. However, that's how they had to do him. If they made him magical can you imagine how much more complexity that would add? You also forgot he's Xavier's half-brother and in the movie he didn't even flinch towards Proffessor X. He was just a dumb goon. He was a definite abomination. But I realize WHY he had to be like that. Dude Lady Deathstrike was crap too. She was just a goon. So was Sabretooth. But to cry about bone structure is pretty lame. I'd rather someone who can act have the part than it be animated by some crappy studio again. |
| #82naexJul 17, 2008 1:33:54 | I was about to argue, but I realized that anything I said would also apply to 4e Realms. It seems changing things to get the largest number of people to participate is all the rage these days, so we end up with bad x-men, Bumblebee as a Camaro, a lousy version of Lord of the Rings and a non-realms Realms. Such is life... So I guess I have to accept a 6 ft Caucasian Drizzt with an Italian accent, cause it will sell tickets. Darn my support of the changes to the realms. |
| #83akumadaimyoJul 17, 2008 3:13:27 | ACTUALLY Bumblebee as a Camaro was done cause BMW cried about "being in a movie about war". If people still buy your product after the Nazi's I don't think a movie about fiction giant robots is gonna hurt them. And as far as "6ft elves" they CAN change people's height with mere camera tricks. The Hobbits actors in LOTR aren't all 4 ft tall or so in real life. LOTR was NOT lousy by any means but then that is your opinion. |
| #84naexJul 17, 2008 3:36:40 | ACTUALLY Bumblebee as a Camaro was done cause BMW cried about "being in a movie about war". Yes, my opinion, but in Transformers, Bumblebee is next to a bug on the used car lot. And as I hear it, it was because GM offered to provide all the cars for the movie, so they had to use the Camaro. And The LOTR movies were good from a special effects point of view, but they changed the story and feel to make it more Hollywood. Read the books, there are few blow by blow accounts of fights. The entire Helms Deep battle is mostly about Legolas and Gimli stating how many they have killed, and some away from the lines stuff. With only major events being described, like the breaching of the wall. |
| #85KhaeliethJul 17, 2008 5:36:55 | Alan Rickman as Elaith Craulnober... AND CALL OFF CHRISTMASS! Actually, Pipping (the actor) frequents a pub not too far away from me;p |
| #86stmaliceJul 17, 2008 9:04:46 | What was cut out of the LoTR movie? Dude, you should have read the original book before the publisher told him to re-write it, and the editor chopped up certain parts. And the original idea in his head was amazing before Tolkein went and screwed it all up with another idea. Heck it was even better living during that time when it all went down, but God got all uppity and changed everything erasing ever the existence of elves and hobbits. Lord Karsus: Don't fool yourself into thinking WoTC would have anything to do with "funding" this or any movie. They simply sign off the rights. R.A. or someone would create the script, shop it around to studios. Some studio says, "YES" and then when they do, the writer is pretty much done at that point. The executives then look for a director. Script might sit there for years before seeing any action. They might even just take ownership of the script and look for a producer (the entity that funds the movie). OR... a producer might say, I'd like to make The Crystal Shard into a movie and look for a writer or script and a director. Bottom line, you want this movie, you want someone to do it justice. You'll need a LoTR budget and LoTR grade special effects. You'll also need to set the background of the story so beware, it may not turn out anything like the book, SHOCKING I know. |
| #87KhaeliethJul 17, 2008 9:09:42 | What annoyed me most was that they dropped TOM BOMBADIL. Plus the cities were tiny.... |
| #88bleedingstarJul 17, 2008 9:55:28 | LOTR did not get the budget until after the 1st movie. So I think if they did th first one right, it would work. Do one movie, just to see how it does and continue with it if it works. |
| #89umbralknightJul 17, 2008 13:01:29 | What was cut out of the LoTR movie? I'm sorry, what? ![]() Don't mean to be snarky, but I don't get it. Lost in translation or something. Anyway, back to the Drizzt movie. Drow that actually look like drow in a movie is possible with modern CG. I will say it again, look at Beowulf. Use that kind of tech, and it is possible to do Drizzt justice. So, there really is no reason to settle and use traditional live action. Especially so if the live action actors look nothing like elves. As for Samuel L? "I am sick and tired of these mother****ing drow in this mother****ing underdark" ...umm, no thanks. ... Monolgues would be important for Drizzt. Samuel Jackson would ruin that for me. His voice acting never varies much. Even if it were CG, I would see Drizzt, but hear "royal with cheese". So yes, thats one movie I wouldn't see. |
| #90shelbydapimpJul 17, 2008 13:20:58 | The only way to do it justice would be to go CG like Baowolf, but with hardcore battle scenes. |
| #91umbralknightJul 17, 2008 13:31:45 | The only way to do it justice would be to go CG like Baowolf, but with hardcore battle scenes. Beowulf meets 300 then... |
| #92raven_shadowereJul 17, 2008 13:32:34 | I don't know. I imagine there is someone who could do it justice. That was bloody wicked!! Thanks for sharing!! |
| #931_ton_ghostJul 17, 2008 13:50:45 | Lot of misinformation and misconceptions here for good or ill. -Financing: LotR's budget was allocated from the get go. They filmed all 3 at once due to the budget actually. Saved alot of money. They were taking a huge risk so they were trying to consolidate their finances as best as they could. Pirates, on the otherhand, ahd 1 filmed, then 2 & 3 together. $ is bottom line, always, especially when 7 figures are on the line. Producers want to see a return on their investment. That's what a movie is to them, just an unfinished transaction really. WotC would not personally finance it I'm guessing. That's a huge amount of cash and judging by the failure of previous D&D movies, a 3rd party would probably pick up the tab. If Hasbro were to pay for all of it, then they have full creative license (given Salvatore's leave and artistic oversight). Good example) most Marvel movies were not done soley by Marvel given the tremendous amount of cash it takes to make a film. So, the comic company profits very little if at all. This year, however, it changed; Iron Man & Hulk were Marvel Studios, and since the prior did exceedingly well and the later so so, that sets a really good precident and makes for a brighter future where the originators, the braintrust behind these intellectual properties, have more sway than a bunch of suits more interested in a buck than a quality story. -Script: you gotta' remember it's a screenplay, not a book rendered verbatim on the screen. Alot of the great stuff in text will not perform well in digital or celluloid. Some has to be cut out for timing constraints, which ultimately parley w/ financial ones too. You're changing medias, sacrfices must be made for the good of the final product. Some are good, some not. Jackson is a diehard Tolkien fan, but he understood he couldn't put every element of the books on film as it wouldn't have always worked. Some things must be added that aren't in the orginal text too for sake of flow and the story itself. This alone could be its own thread, but you have to understand things get lost in translation purposefully and accidentally. -Format: FX heavy fantasy can be done via animation, but then you usually sacrifice profits in the home box office. Here's why; many American audiences think, "Animated = kids/younger audiences" and are alientated thusly. Live-action captures emotive acting better and has more humanistic appeal typically. However, it usually costs alot more. Sets can be destroyed, shoots delayed due to weather or your leading star in rehab, strikes in differing unions, etc. A million independent variables. Animated is often cheaper and can render big spell/planar FX via CGI w/out having to blow up whole buildings in expensive pyrotechnical displays. But, you gotta' market the Hell out of it. Typically, only animated films that do well (not straight to video by design) are Pixars these days and they are decidely kid friendly, or family fare. Evil elves sacrificing babies and slaves flippantly, demons a'poppin', and so on, uh, isn't... That being said, Icewind Dale would be easier rendered live-action than the Dark Elf trilogy given the incredible expense it would take to simulate a magic heavy, subterranean evil dwelling. Not to mention all of the strange monsters of the underdark that would be hard to fabricate IRL. -Casting: never a big issue this day save for your budget. For this type of venture, you gotta' have some suspension of disbelief like in LotR if it's live-action. Again, some things get lost. Amazing things can be done via make-up and CGI, but there is a limit and often (usually) it is better to have an approximation than an exact rendering. You pay too much attention to the details, you neglect the whole. Film, as a story, perfectly represents this. And since we're dealing w/ relatively instense emotions, live-action will capture that better. Again, though, animated has its strengths in that you can visually render stranger, more extreme visages easier than make-up, etc. Short actors (like Tom Cruise, Stallone, etc) are put on risers, ones made to be short (hobbits for example) are shot at extreme angles or sets modified, etc. No big deal there. There are a million tricks that it isn't a problem Drow, well, you'll probably want more lithe, wirey builds and a Hell of alot of make-up artists, white wigs, and contact lenses. Anatomy is irrelevant. We're telling a story, not giving a biology lecture. They would do well to take a page from Jackson's elves. And how many girls went crazy for Legolas btw? It's all so damn crazy and takes forever to do. All I know is there is a frenzy of studios buying up the film rights to alot of things like this. Watch for more at Gencon this year as when I went in '06, Devils Due Press put out Hack/Slash, a horror comic, poppin' fresh off the press and bam!, rogue studios made an offer. They did make the Dark Elf trilogy and Icewinddale Trilogy which were very well done and very successful. So, who knows. Watchmen is in post production, new Punisher coming out, and bla bla bla. Comics and fantasy are definetely in vogue and making so much money, they won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Says something for Hollywood though. No more creative writing? No problem, we'll buy someone else's... A Forgotten Realms pic though...I'd love that, but realistically, the benchmark is set so high now, that I'm just not comfortable saying "it's gonna' happen." It's so up and down. Anyway, yeah, I think they'll stick w/ the books for now. Now, the fluff: -Don't think Jackson would make a very good character here. Very outspoken, very aggressive. Drow are creatures of guile and subterfugue. -I'd like to see Cillian Murphy maybe as Drizzt. Good acting range, proper build, reliable actor, very versatile. -I like the shout out to Alan Rickman, respect. Made man, very commanding presence, classical. Not sure who'd he well play in either trilogy. Zaknafien? Definetely an older, more learned, and grim character. -Judi Dench as Matron Benrae. Like a female Rickman. Fierce, strong woman. Perhaps Helen Mirren or Cate Blanchette w/ heavy makeup -Daniel Craig might be a good Artemis. Rugged, wears a 5 o'clock shadow well, very stern and authoritative demeanor. Blonde has to go though. -Tilda Swinton as Catie Brie. That's a tough call. Not sure. -And uh, one of the great cats from Sigfried & Roy's acts as "Guen". The one that bit him ;) |
| #94bleedingstarJul 17, 2008 17:23:53 | Drizzt-Luke Goss. No arguement, end of conversation. Artimis-Tim Roth, Christian Bale, or Brad Pitt Catti Bri- Charlize Theron Jaraxle- Johnny Depp ,or someone like him! he is Jaraxle. I know I will catch crap for it cause "he doesnt look like an elf", but wow it would be awesome! aside from him playing jack sparrow. |
| #95steerpike7Jul 17, 2008 17:41:33 | Drizzt-Luke Goss. No arguement, end of conversation. Yeah, wouldn't want any "evil" black actors in the movie. That's what they invented blackface for after all... Heh. |
| #96bleedingstarJul 18, 2008 1:54:53 | I just can not think of any that would fit the roles? Wesley snipes- NO WAY! Samuel L Jackson- Great Actor, just not good for the part. Will Smith-uummmmmm no. Denziel Washington- Not mobile enough. Jamie Fox-........Maybe, but still not who I picture Drizzt or Jaraxle as. So unless I am missing anyone.... I just do not seeing a African American playing any of the parts. |
| #97naexJul 18, 2008 2:00:32 | Tim Russ (Tuvok from ST Voyager) might work, he already has somewhat elvish features, especially with the ears on. |
| #98stmaliceJul 18, 2008 8:59:05 | LOTR did not get the budget until after the 1st movie. So I think if they did th first one right, it would work. Do one movie, just to see how it does and continue with it if it works. Incorrect, Peter Jackson shot all three movies at once. Only going back to re-shoot some scenes for the DVD's and to try some other ideas he had. New Line Cinema fronted him with $300,000,000 to make all three movies. They did dish out more money for later shooting, but Peter Jackson's argument was that this scale of film making couldn't be done logistically without shooting all three at once. |
| #99steerpike7Jul 18, 2008 10:36:21 | I just can not think of any that would fit the roles? Was just joking bleedingstar...just struck my funny bone :D |
| #1001_ton_ghostJul 18, 2008 10:53:37 | Too true. What they don't mention often is that New Line screwed him big time over monies due after the films turned into huge successes. They got greedy. Movie producers, greedy, , who would've thought.Sad really, the guy that took their major gamble and turned it into such a big cash cow would get betrayed in such a way. This is why he didn't immeditely sign up to do the "Hobbit" right away. They were still involved in a nasty legal dispute. Now they have Guillermo del Toro, another badass director, slated to do the Hobbit, though it's in 2 parts. The casting theories: are you guys speculating black actors cast as drow cuz' they are people of color? How does that work? I mean, last time I checked mohogany, chestnut, mocha, whatever, doesn't look like jet black anymore than a caucasian's and tightly curled black hair is a far cry from flat white, long flowing hair. Hence, a ton of make-up artists, CGI, or just animate the Hell out of it. Blacks tend to have more developed musculature and skeletal systems too than typical cauasians. They did cast one of the Wayans as an elf in that abortion of a movie though (D&D) for what it's worth. With that conceit physically speaking, not sure how "drow friendly" it would be. Still, w/ the stuff they can do today in make-up, prosthetics, CGI, it is probably a moot point though. Better to cast them by their skill, not appearance. If you made all the drow players black I'm sure someone, somewhere would complain up a storm on the racial tip on both ends: oh, whites weren't suitable enough? or the counterpoint, you saying all blacks are neutral evil? People always wanna take it and run w/ it, turning an otherwise good thing into a bone of contention. Sucks how an entertainment venue gets so warped. I've seen it before, it's sad. When "Attack of the Clones" came out, you wouldn't believe the irresponsible journalism. A local dumbass that wrote for the Enquirer (Cincy) made racial overtures about the "biggoted, evil nature" of Lucas in that all storm troopers are clones of a latino actor, and this, "conjured up images of a growing immigration problem" and them "storming" our borders, and bla bla bla. That they were expendable and cloned (breed) in such numbers was some sort of intellectual social commentary...please. Not even a good editorial. That has nothing to say for the Trade Federation race and how they were "largely chinese sounding" and that it's discriminating against Asians, etc. Them having such draconian economic control, they must be a reference to China. Ok, apt, but so the Hell what? It's a movie. You see where this is going I'm sure. |

He's from New Zealand. |

Its hard for Americans to distinguish from Ausie, but for us folks here in SA the difference is plain as day. He is selfish, and goes out of his way to be selfish, usually causing problems for everyone around him. Add on the fact that everyone else needs to defend him, and you've got a very solid character.
