There is no good reason that non martial upfront fighting classes shouldn't be able to access the melee[whatever] theme.

I really hate overreaching restrictions.

In ESdB's discussion thread, he stated that the restrictions didn't come from him but from other people adding to the article. A more simpler way would be to require training in Religion for certain themes or none at all. Still, it's not that hard to fool the Character Builder into providing those options for your character outside of the requirements.

It's just annoying. Like some of the themes in the Neverwinter suppliment. There's no actual good reason that the wererat theme should that strict restrictions. A character that is a bit outside the norm, but within pretty easy to describe backstory territory should not require houseruling. Other themes, like red robed wizard, make sense to require the mage class, because it's features require mage class features.

Fluff based mechanical restrictions are just bad.

Yeah, the restrictions are pretty lame... nothing I can't overlook or ignore though, just like old stuff for alignment.  If I didn't care about alignment for that game, just a bit of derping around and BAM.  BAD would be that if there's no quick way around it.

lol I'd say there are degrees of bad, and these aren't too extreme, but are still bad. :P
