Oct 06, 2008 16:02:03 Is there anywhere I can get a complete list of the edition 3 FR D&D rulebooks? I am doing more overtime at work now so since I am going to have some extra money I want to buy another edition 3 rulebook or two.

Oct 06, 2008 16:17:02 There's a good number of them. I would recommend the Campagin Guide, the Player's Guide to Faerun maybe the Races of Faerun. I guess it depends on how much you are looking for and what sort of information. There are a good many regional style ones which are not necessary unless it's for an area that you really want some more intell on.

I don't recall seeing a cleric in your party composition on the other thread so the Faiths and Pantheons is probably not really a needed one.

-City of Splendors: Waterdeep
-Dragons of Faerun
-Faiths and Pantheons (3.0)
-the Grand History of the Realms (No rules, All lore)
-Lords of Darkness (3.0)
-Lost Empires of Faerun
-Magic of Faerun (3.0) (lots of crunch, most of which[except for prestige classes] can be found[updated] in the Player's Guide to Faerun)
-Monsters of Faerun (3.0)
-Mysteries of the Moonsea (No crunch: Lorebook/Adventures mix. Bleh.)
-Player's Guide to Faerun (crunch heavy)
-Power of Faerun (Not much crunch, except if you use Heroes of Battle rules)
-Races of Faerun (3.0)
-Serpent Kingdoms
-Shining South
-Silver Marches (3.0)
-Unapproachable East
-Underdark

3.5 Updates for many monsters found in the 3.0 FR books can be found here

Oct 07, 2008 10:14:58 The list of sourcebooks divided by edition at the Forgotten Realms Wiki seems pretty complete, so you might want to check that out. If you have a Half Price Books in your town you might consider that--at my local branch anyway they've always got a ton of the 3.0/3.5 Realms stuff.

Lord Karsus also mentioned finding the dividing line for the fiction. That's a little trickier for a whole raft of reasons, but you can get at least a rough idea if you take the edition dividing lines to fall at the "Campaign Year" of the various campaign guides, then use them as parameters to sort this Fiction Timeline maintained at the Forgotten Realms: The Library site.

Using that (again, problematic) rubric, a rough guideline would be:

First Edition: Anything set before 2nd Edition.
2nd Editon: From 1367, The Year of the Shield
3rd Edition: From 1372, The Year of Wild Magic
"3rd 'n' a Half" Edition: From 1373, The Year of Rogue Dragons until at least 1385, The Year of Blue Fire

The Wailing Years and the "hundred" year jump--edition assignment for fiction from 1385 to 1479 is even more problematic than most.

4th Edition: At least from 1479 DR, The Year of the Ageless One, but possibly since 1385

Oct 07, 2008 10:18:20 I'm quite certain there was 2E FR material set before the year 1367 DR (many of the Drizzt novels, for example), although I am aware that there was a "mini time-jump" sometime in that era.

Absolutely. Like I said, the rubric is problematic--or quick 'n' dirty might be more to the point. The thing is, if you judge even one of the books by internal textual evidence (as opposed to its stated chronological setting), then you have to judge all of them that way, which invites a project--and a discussion--far outside the scope of this thread.

This is something I look forward to then. I missed most of 2e, and have often considered getting some 2e books for the lore. A list will be handy.

I mentioned this up above, but the list of sourcebooks divided by edition at the Forgotten Realms Wiki is just a click away and has bibliographic details as well. I've had great luck finding hardcopy versions of sourcebooks and modules from all editions via AbeBooksand .pdf copies of first and second edition material via Paizo Publishing. And of course Wizards of the Coast provides a ton of free .pdf downloads of older material, as well.

Oh thats handy thanks. I've never actually used the FR wiki. Which is weird, because I frequent lots of Wikis. And free downloads certainly get me interested.
