Eilistraee's Moonfire

Apr 02, 2009 15:39:20 So I want to make a character(Favored Soul) whose spell usage is decently reliant on Eilistraee's Moonfire, at least damage wise. Now of course this necessitates the creation of higher levels yet I'm not entirely sure of how to do this.

The way that Moonfire works in the books, if I remember correctly, seemed to do whatever the character/author wanted/needed it to do at the time and this is one of the main problems.

The simple approach, of course, would be to just keep adding to the dmg with each level increase, but that seemed a little bland to me. I would appreciate if I might get a little assistance in the way of ideas.

mayhap you should look into spellfire? retool it to be more elfish and recharge by lunar cycles or however they do it.

This seems to me to be the best approach. I don't have/read the Forgotten Realms PHB or Campaign book; however from what I can tell from cannon books (novels), the moonfire looks to be a spell alteration template.

Rules for Spellfire can be found in Magic of Faerûn, and while Eilistraee's Moonfire has never been given formal 3e rules, Selûne's Moonfire has rules in Magic of Faerûn as well, where Selûne can be substituted for Eilistraee.

My specific references of canon are the "war of the spider queen" and "the lady penitent". Both serise specifically refer to Eilistraee's Moonfire. Again not having read any of the playing books of Faerun or the Forgotten Realms, but from the descriptions of Eilistrae's Moonfire in the canon novels, I can only guess that is a spell "template".

-Moonfire is a specific spell with specific effects (described in Magic of Faerûn, for 3e sources) and nothing more. Spellfire (also described in the same book) is closer to what you are describing- a "offensive" magical aura/energy that "levels up" as the character levels up, and can do multiple things, from attack to heal to charging/draining magical items.

Quietly points at Champions of Valor, p.55.

OP, ask the DM whether s/he will either grant you a level-based d6 increase along the lines of a warlocks eldritch blast, or to simply remove the level cap on damage i.e. 2d6+class level. Since it allows no save, it is still a handy tool. Perhaps you can add Empower / Maximize Spell at higher levels for that spell only too. Wouldn't overstretch it too much though.
