I know, strange post.

But I have an RPG webcomic, and for some reason the topic of Elminster's underwear and what enchantments he had on it came up.

I distinctly recall reading it in one of my many FR supplements, but I tried looking and I can't seem to find it now. I know it had lots of enchantments on it (at least I seem to recall that).

Anyone know?

I think you might be confusing them with Storm's Garter, which is a properly written-out magical item found in the 2e product The Seven Sisters.

The only place I know where El's undergarments show their stuff is either Cloak of Shadows or All Shadows Fled. I don't remember which book the scene is in, but El's fighting a Thayan super-golem. He gets teleported into mid=air by Ao, and uses his undergarments to fly. Considering that the text specifically mentions them "tugging him this way," and considering how much actors who spend time in harnesses for flying/jumping stunts complain it hurts, it couldn't have been a very pleasant way to fly...

More like Protection from Skid-marks. :D

I think - and I'm serious - it was mentioned somewhere once that he also had a 'gate' in his underwear... so that he didn't have to... ermm... stop and... errr... do his business.

Which makes me wonder where, exactly, is the other end of that portal in El's small clothes?

-Right...Elminster is really interested in men. All of those women who find their way into his bed, Elminster's willing to "take the hit" for Mystra, and do what he needs to do. Elminster is really into the quiet, smart, librarian types (ie, Lhaeo).

Rather then Prestidigitation, might I suggest two cantrips? Clean and [i]Freshen[i]?

I also think his Underwear should be sentient - an awakened artifact. Probably someone who's soul Elminster wanted to trap in that unholy purgatory (like Sammaster).

So it has to be a cleaning cantrip, so Elminster does not have to change his undies... ever. Might be its his most affectionate piece of wardrobe, and it allows him to center his insane self better (like a long lived lich and its ragged undies).

-It is humorous when people read (and this mainly, I have found, happens in fantasy) literature that uses the term 'thong' as in sandals, and mistake it for the type of underwear.

-In something I wrote a while ago, I mentioned the character putting on leather sandals, and (the file has long since been deleted) wrote the line something like, "Walking away from the window with a sigh, he deliberately flipped his leather thongs over his feet, as he prepared to leave the room", or something like that. One of the critiques that I got from one of my classmates (it was an English project) was someone saying that leather isn't the best type of material for underwear like that, and that was kinky. I found it funny, and I am sure that if I had any shred of popularity in school, it would have disappeared right there. It's hard to go past "weird person who might shoot up the school", though, so it all went in stride, I guess.

-"Walking away from the window with a sigh, he deliberately flipped his leather thongs over his feet, as he prepared to leave the room", or something like that.

Reminds me of an old joke.

Jimmy: Teacher, what does it mean when the story says "Robin Hood tore his leather"?

The last thing I was expecting form an official web site was a conversation 'bout Elminsters pants. Cool.

About the Pant's Gate I know now how the Far Realm came into existance.

Since his pipe is considered to be a mighty artifact, his undergarment are propably epic, inteligent, magic items, infused with divine essence.:D

Elminster is the funniest and coolest character I've ever known. Calm, funny and joyfull 'til the end, "the man". In Realms 4e I thing I read that simbul is still alive and lives in shadowdale too. Might this be the reason why elminster stoped adventuring???? What does he do the last 100 jears "alone" in his tower (or mill/dont remember).

Do you know what happend to the other 7 sisters? I'm afraid they are unconsious, due to the phenomenon called Elminster, and will continue to be for an other 20 years.;)

The Simbul normally went-around wearing old rags that exposed most of her body, while she was a QUEEN, which is why most folks considered her insane.

Since you are able to see her 'goodies' through holes in her attire, one can assume that she wore no undergarments (or that they were just as worm-eaten as the rest... which is just plain gross when you think about it).

-It means that, since Elminster is Ed Greenwood's persona projected onto paper, Ed Greenwood secretly wishes that he is a woman. That's the only thing that it could all mean. The only thing.

-Perhaps I was. Perhaps I don't like Ed Greenwood. Perhaps I wasn't. Perhaps I do like Ed Greenwood. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

-I realized, though, that this is not necessarily his fault, per se, for providing such information. After all, for him to provide an answer, someone needed to have asked the question. So, someone inquired about something that happened to involve rough armored guards and underwear.

"Vorpal" has traditionally been taken to mean "decapitating" (in D&D at least) per the original use of the (made-up) word by Lewis Carroll in Jabberwocky.

You won't admit you love Ed
And so how are we ever to know
You always tell him
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps

A million times I've asked you
And then I ask you over again
You only answer
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps

If you can't make your mind up
We'll never get started
And I don't wanna wind up
Being 4E, broken-Realmsy

So if you really love Ed say 'yes!'
But if you don't dear, confess
And please don't tell him
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps

Anyhow, this all just reminded me a cantrip I created awhile back. Basically, it 'offsets' a gas emission from the caster's body, and can 'send it' to anywhere within a 100' of the caster (both sound and odor are transported).

Which is great fun at parties. :D

Also useful in elevators.

Anyhow, no pair of magical undies would be complete without that one.

JudgeDookie

#144

markustay63

May 29, 2009 12:18:50
Well, I had thought of that as well - its a bit of a contingency affect. You cast-it when you start to get that 'funny feeling', and it kicks-in once the moment is right (and transfer the offensive smell and noise either randomlly to someone else within range, or at the caster's discretion at the time of casting). It has only a five minute duration, so you had better "belt one out" within that time, otherwise the spell is wasted.

Young scoundral nobles of Waterdeep have had great fun with this spell (which they have had placed in rings and such) as a party-gag, and have been known to eat large quantities of Curried Calishite Cave-Rothe with Luiren Fire-peppers, to just to insure maximum potency. :D

CR it varies due to template. If its a nutty yeast infected blood fart you add 2. Now if its a runny yeast infected blood fart you add 3. That makes it immune to flanking and crits, and it cannot be flanked. Now if you get the +3 holy pepto you can turn it very easily.

Wasnt there an Elminster's 4e Stats thread around here some where? Ive been thinking on this and in 4e Elminster would totally be a Bard, now before im lynched again let me explain my reasoning. Elminsters been a little of everything. Hes been a Fighter, a Rogue, probably some Cleric in there too, I mean the guys done it all, so the Multi-Class versatility would really suit El, also Els encyclopedic knowledege of the Realms has bardic knowledge written all over it, aside from the fact that hes over a 1000 years old. So I could definatly see Elminster as a Bard, heavily, heavily, Multiclassed into wizard, among other things.

#299

JudgeDookie

Nov 09, 2009 22:06:55

Elminster would have (almost--if not equivalent) the exact same stats he has in 3e. He would not be a bard.

Keep in mind, they have faked their own deaths before... and even if you do see a corpse, that's not necessarily saying much where a previous edition spellcaster is concerned.  Its not that different from comic books really, and you could chalk the Spellplague up there with the Infinite Crisis and its ilk... who knows what weirdness it spawned and who saw what coming and took what precautions with gods only know what contingencies... maybe Mystra hasn't respawned because she never really died and is just biding her time, waiting for the right moment to strike...

#306

The_Silversword

Right. Mystra did put alot of herself into her Chosen, so I guess as long as just one of them lives, then a piece of Mystra lives on.

Yeah now that is stupid. They should of called the one in Divine Power something else. Thats just too confusing having two Epic Destinies with the same name, Unless the one in Divine Power was meant to replace the one in the FRPG? That would blow Shar bits indeed!

How is the FR one better when the one in DP is exactly the same except for the powers for the various gods, which unsurprisingly vary? (And stealth errata the FR version in one case, what with the DP version of the Chosen utility power for Corellon actually being a useful power on par with the others that applies to situations that actually exist, unlike the inexcusably god-awful one in FRPG.)

*shakes head, goes away again*

(Yeah I've pretty much left the boards at this point due to a certain something I won't name, I barely check them now, so if you don't see me around except for the occasional snarky comment when I felt like seeing if anything actually interesting that wasn't ruined by you-know-what had happened, you know why.)

#320

The_Silversword

Nov 10, 2009 5:10:23

I think the one in the FR is better because you dont have to be a Divine character, so if Tempus wanted a Fighter as his chosen he could, which makes more sense to me, rather than having a fighter have to multiclass into a divine class that he will probably never use other than to get the Chosen ED. I havnt compared the powers or nothing so I dont know about that, but I see no reason why you couldnt switch them out.

And dont you dare leave us Nai. Its getting far too quiet around here as of late, we cant afford to lose you too.

At least one more time.

Its my understanding that Mystras power they weild is absorbed by Toril once they die. Although if Elminster absorbed them then maybe they are some of the voices in his head. Im thinking the voices in his head are his Faithful, because Els the god of magic now, he just dont know it yet. I hope thats not were they go with it, but I have my suspicions. And I still think Elminsters a Bard, and Volo and Elminster are one and the same.

As in it's absorbed by the planet itself and generated into some sort of creation energy? Interesting. I'd think that some other deity/higher entity/very powerful mortal might snatch up the glimmers of divine energy, or that Ao would absorb simply to remove it from play. But, the planet itself absorbing it is interesting.

It certainly does seem like a safety net, if they ever decided to use the "El becomes God" hook in the future.

And I still think Elminsters a Bard, and Volo and Elminster are one and the same.

El has several useless levels in Fighter, Cleric, and Rogue. He probably has levels in other classes, too. Hmmm... El with levels in Avenger and Druid. Fun. Tongue out

No.

No again and quite likely.

Normally, it would have returned to Mystra--i.e., The Weave. Now that Mystra has been snuffed and, therefore, The Weave, it would return to whatever constitutes the source of all magic at this point.

Ed goes into some detail in the Shadows of the Avatar seris about what happens to the power they weild, It is absorbed into the life essence of Toril, then it is very slowly reabsorbed by Mystra, of course now that Mystra is offed, whos to say where it goes? It might very well of went to Elminster. I cant wait for Elminster Must Die comes out, the more we discuss topics such as this, the more I want to read that book!

#340

JudgeDookie

Nov 10, 2009 20:58:32

Indeed.

Though, I don't see another El' book coming out anytime soon unless it is set in the past. One of the points of 4e was to make him as harmless as possible.

I can dig your point about him being the god of magic without knowing it, but faithful being the voices in his head isn't the case. But, being Mystryl's original Chosen, I can see him easily taking control of the portfolio after some certain requirement is meant. I just see that being absorbing the essence of the Seven Sisters.

#341

The_Silversword

Nov 10, 2009 21:04:31

Well as I understand Elminster Must Die will be coming out sometime next year, and Ed promises it will fill in some gaps and answer alot of questions (probably raising more in the process). Im not sure what time period the book is set in. Its my understanding that it will be in Moderen Day Realms, but I expect alot of flashbacks in there. It might take place shortly after the Spellplauge, Im not sure.

I guess this is what I get for abandoning this place for so long. A modern day El' tale? Hell, I thought you were joking about that title.

Well dont hold me on the modern day thing, Im guessing. It might indeed be in the past, but I think it relates to Els current predicament. I know theres no way WotC will let Ed actually kill El off, Im anxiously waiting to see how it goes down.

#344

JudgeDookie

Nov 10, 2009 22:07:57

As far as I was aware, anything Ed was to write was to be set in the past. One of the reason's he was so against 4e. Presumably, part of the reason he has such resentment with all these NDA's as well.

Hmmmm that would makes sense, It is stated in the book in question, (I dont even remember the name of it, book one of the Shadow of the Avatar seris) that the energy goes back to toril, it does specify that no other god save mystra can touch it, and she reabsorbes it slowly.  Well with Mystra being offed I guess that would be all screwed anyway. I think Chantea is the aspect of the physical world, not nessacirly the spiritial one.  Jeeze Im gonna have to go dig this book out aint I?

And I very much manage the forums in IE myself.  Isn't difficult in the slightest in a technical sense, unless you count the strange inability to actually stay in the subforums... that and I happen to like IE quite a bit.

This time? At least 36. I didn't personally count. Think it was into 3 days though.

I emailed them, and they seemed to figure out how to "unban" me this time, so I'm cool with it.

I think I am the first person they had to do it to and got ****ed up trying to figure out how to handle it--'cause this time they got the second part right, Else, I would have still been out.

Either way, the ORCS are just doing their jobs--I can't bitch.

Didn't then or now.  I don't approve of shrooms, given the details of where they come from, and I certainly don't bother with prozac.  I just naturally gravitate towards fulfilling my end of the social contract that keeps the world on a relatively even keel.  Unlike some I can think of...

Male cows don't have udders, just small nipples - and they're called bulls (or steers, if castrated).  But cartoons are really weird that way, and these days I think people are used to using "cow" to mean both male and female.

And I think it's extra weird that we're talking about udders in the Elminster's Underwear thread.

Right Males are bulls. I knew that. What? Really I did!
and where else would we talk about udders at? I dont really see it as having potential for its own thread, unless maybe Bulls of the Realms have udders!

Dude, first off, I'll dispute something, but I won't even attempt to debate or participate in such a thing unless it is something valid to "Realmslore" or something I am interested in. No offense, but who gives a **** who Volo really is or isn't? Does it or will it change your perception of the Realms as a whole? Not really. So you get the "why be passionate about something so insignificant?" thing.

And, if you want to attempt to drive something up under a thread called Elminster's Underwear, then get a clue (again, no offense). Unless you simply enjoy these boards, you have all but abandoned this thread. You need to start a new one with a focused topic to have such a thing discussed.

The thread I mentioned was worth it because you had people passionate about lore participating. Something this place sorely has lacking these days.

I agree. That is more or less the point i was making, I dont expect there really to be much debate on something as stupid as Elminsters gay! I was making a bit of joke, just a bit of a one, I was also half serious, not about El being gay (because he was a woman at the time so it doesnt count). But it does seem as though participation has dropped off, I know before if I said Els gay there would of been all kindsa ruckus over that. But any way there are a few topics that pop up here and there. The discussion of Abeirspace in the FR planes thread is a good one, and Im still trying to figure that one out.

#444

JudgeDookie

Nov 19, 2009 1:04:01
Participation dropped off: 1) because of 4e ( how the **** can you have a "Realmslore" thread with no lore to work on?); and, 2) they changed the boards without any true intent to fix them. While I am still putting together my "bitch list" on what is programmaticly wrong here, I doubt anything would even be addressed for another half-year at least, simply because the check needed to be cut would be too much for the amount odf participation these boards get these days.

I mean, they didn't even migrate our accounts. How lazy is that ****?

---

As for the Abier post, that's not a debate, just a bunch of hypothetical ****--no true opinions matter or facts involved.

Personaly I love hypothetical ****! I mean its one thing to be discussing established lore and someones like yeah thats in such and such book pg 69 or whatever. I prefer the type of discussions that go beyond whats in the book. things that the books just dont cover, like what does Elminster use to wipe his bum? Of course come to find out, that was already answered over at Candlekeep. I think thats another problem right there, aside from the fact that alot of people split because they dont like 4e or the new forums or whatever, theres really no new questions. The Realms have been around for like what 30 years now? In a published form anyway. Youd be hard pressed to come up with a question or comment that hasnt already been brought up before. But yeah I agree with the new low lore setting it does make for less to talk about. Unless a new novel is out or a particulary good article comes out of Dragon or Dungeon then activity kinda picks up a little.

Thats the whole point there is to have fun! as far as these forums go and actually playing the game. If youre not having fun then youre doing something wrong! Im not sure what threadcrapping is but im willing to bet that ive done it a time or two.

It would be really cool if they put out sourcebooks for different eras of the Realms, like they do with Star Wars. I would totally buy that! Not sure how I would do the spell system for prespellplauge Realms, or during the Age of Netheril in the 4e format.

Its doubtful you could, because a lot of the fundamental presumptions on the way magic and classes do and do not work have radically altered with 4e.  Which is not to say its good or bad, just different enough so as to be largely incompatible in function and flavor in anything other than a technical sense.

Actually I quite like elves.  I just don't like the monsters that call themselves elves in the Realms, or their evil overlords, the Seldarine.  Well, I guess that means I like the idea of elves, just not the way they were presented in the Realms.  They're obviously "Teh Fail" compared to Hin and Gnomes afterall, so I guess a lot of their atrocities are just acting out on those feelings of inadequacy that they so apparently harbor towards the smaller, and hence closer to the earth, folks.
#475

JudgeDookie

Nov 26, 2009 18:12:28
Yeah. But as I believe I have brought up before, the elves you conceptualize could never be played as a PC. Any playable race will have a human taint to it to some degree, so it simply wouldn't work in a setting like FR.
#476

Nai_Calus

Nov 26, 2009 20:57:06

To be honest, I'm not that fond of FR elves myself. Especially Sun Elves. Buncha jerks.

The Seldarine at least is multispheric, and FR elves are known to be wrong about it at times. :P Funny how the members of it I like the least are FR-specific. Shevarash pisses me off in ways Ye'Cind just somehow doesn't. (Probably because he isn't a god of officially sanctioned hate crimes. Funny how no other crystal sphere seems to need an elven god of hate. FR makes the poor Seldarine look bad.)

Drow already have Rangers, so no need to give them S.E.A.L.'s.  I'd go with Hin or Gnome S.E.A.L.'s myself, since they both get everywhere eventually...

The Halflings could be SEAL's. Look at what happened to there homeland during the Spellplague.

The Gnomes would have to be Mossat, because you don't even know they are around half the time.

And they make toys!

Pesky Torilian elves.

Of course I'm familiar with Aurora's, which was also covered in 2e's Cloak and Dagger to some extent.  I'm familiar with that thread as well, I just avoid it. Tongue out

I sir am quite appalled that you think I whackd them, I did no such thing.....
I stopped in there one night, ate dinner there.
Their beans were quite good, they just didnt agree with my digestive tract and I had gas all night long.... Those gnomes never saw it coming.....

In other words, Aurora's Whole Realms Emporium received some coverage in the aforementioned book.  In the Mercantile Powers section, if I recall correctly.

I just finished reading Cloak of Shadows by Ed Greenwood. Elminster uses his magical underwear in that one no less than 3 times!

I think it depends on his mood, but if hes goin into battle its a safe bet that hes got his magical undies. They apprently are undies of feather fall and levitation, possibly flight as well, other enchantments are on there as well im sure.

Well I just read that book, Cloak of Shadows, and it does reference Els magic undergarments, not once, but thrice! LK brought it up earlier in this thread, but i thought it was a joke, but nope there it is! I havnt read every single Elminster novel, not yey any way, so i dont know if theres any other reference to his undies. I do know from El in Myth Drannor, that he also has a coil of rope that he keeps wraped around his midsection as well.

It was probably Delta's fault... he has gone over to the truly evil these days, and surely his depravity knows no bounds.
