Apr 09, 2009 18:00:24 Ok heres the skinny fleshing out weapons and the sort does anyone have an alphabet Elvin style for names? I like to get creative so words can work too.

Apr 10, 2009 3:48:24 Just make sure that nothing than comes out of FR lorebooks is actually FR Elven. Much that is thrown about as being "Elven" these days comes from Tolkien and the like, which is fine, but not FR-ish. The only FR languages that saw a bit of attention by the designers was Drow (just a dialect related to Elven) and Dwarven. So e.g. coming up with Sindarin (etc.) Elven names for FR weapons gives them some flair, but it wouldn't be FR. Giving Drow-related names to Elven weapons would be flairish too, but not correct, since Drow and (surface) Elven are not the same and surface elves would not name their weapons in the drow tongue. Just as food for thought.

A number of novels featured FR elven names and terms though, but the extent of this is quite limited.

Apr 10, 2009 12:45:15 I could have sworn I read that someone actually did a Tolkien Elvish Dictionary and at one point i thought they actually taught it at college classes. but no I was asking for forgotten realms dialects of elvish and the reason for this was because I found it somewhat difficult to find. Drow was not that difficult to find as you pointed out but that again is why I asked for Elvish and not drow or something else and again thankyou again for the marvelous link, I like elven lore and the Forgotten Realms elves have had my attention for awhile so i just wanted more info on them and that's what i recieved if anyone else hasn;t checked the link then by all means it's pretty good.

-Yes, there are various Sindarin and Quenya dictionaries that can be found online, as well as in Tolkien-related books. I have THIS book on that topic, which is pretty good.

I could have sworn I read that someone actually did a Tolkien Elvish Dictionary and at one point i thought they actually taught it at college classes.

The Silmarrilion has a thorough glossary and pronunciation guide. I don't know about college courses (probably Oxford or Cambridge), but Tolkien taught linguistics, so his creation is actually based on gaelic languages. It works as a language because, for all intents and purposes, it is a language.
