| #2meldreadJul 15, 2008 0:37:01 | Wow that was boring and flat. I don't care about that stuff. I hope the FRCS isn't crammed full of that, because if it is - it wouldn't be worth buying. |
| #3Mr_MiscellanyJul 15, 2008 1:48:03 | I like the artwork. I noted right away two things: Lady Moonfire's canines are a bit long (almost like a vampire with that smile) and she's a warlock. This left me wondering if she has a Fey Pact or Infernal Pact. Guess I'll have to check page 17 of the FRCG when it comes out. You know...the way this excerpt reads is as though the front end of the Campaign Guide starts out with either an adventure or very detailed location info about Loudwater. Consider that you can find, "...the Snake Folk of Najara adventure (see page 32) or the Lair of Shadows adventure (see page 28)..." at the front end of the book. Other thoughts.....I like the way NPCs are presented. The details for Curuvar the Brazen inform DMs where he can be found, what his personality traits are and what his motivations are. This is good because it leaves DM's in the easy position of roleplaying their own style of eccentric, suspicious wizard who frequents a tavern with the goal of finding those who he can best manipulate into unearthing information about the Dire Wood and Draigdurroch Tower. Good stuff. I could do a lot with just this information alone. |
| #4BadCatManJul 15, 2008 2:34:24 | Meh.I noted right away two things: Lady Moonfire's canines are a bit long (almost like a vampire with that smile) and she's a warlock. This left me wondering if she has a Fey Pact or Infernal Pact. With her tiefling fetish? Interesting reward for a skill challenge encounter though. |
| #5BelorinJul 15, 2008 2:55:53 | This the area I based my campaign around, nice to see it's still there, but where's the Merry Mer-She and the Old Owl? I guess after a hundred years one of then became the Green Tankard. I wonder if they remember Odhran Killian, Bard Extrordinaire? Bel |
| #6KhaeliethJul 15, 2008 3:36:45 | What about Nanathlor!? Or The Night Hunt? |
| #7arcas_shanJul 15, 2008 6:48:24 | Anyhow, listen well—the so-called Ogre King was no mere ogre—it was a being called an oni, an ogrelike beast with mystical powers. Shhhht, wise old wizard, you will be shocked by what I'll tell you but I simply have to. These beings are called ogre-mages since a few thousand years. Maybe they're called Oni in Kara-Tur.... |
| #8nymrohdJul 15, 2008 7:13:58 | People actually tend to die or move on after 100 years |
| #9lord_karsusJul 15, 2008 7:54:56 | Shhhht, wise old wizard, you will be shocked by what I'll tell you but I simply have to. These beings are called ogre-mages since a few thousand years. Maybe they're called Oni in Kara-Tur.... ![]() -I notice no levels. -To echo Meldred, the entire article seems very 'blah'. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, being as that I don't have the adventure that this place is supposed to take place in. -And, concerning the artwork, I, personally, find it quite subpar to what I expect in D&D sourcebooks. |
| #10merrikcaleJul 15, 2008 8:28:28 |
Well, its not an adventure but a detailed town for a default campaign starting point. I think. The artwork is poor |
| #11banpaiJul 15, 2008 9:11:56 | Shhhht, wise old wizard, you will be shocked by what I'll tell you but I simply have to. These beings are called ogre-mages since a few thousand years. Maybe they're called Oni in Kara-Tur.... Shhht new Monster Manual renamed them to Oni. I kinda liked the article, it was far better than nothing. The only thing that bugs me is the warlock showing so much teeth, I never can take anyone with such a smile serious. |
| #12capnvanJul 15, 2008 9:16:36 | I noted right away two things: Lady Moonfire's canines are a bit long (almost like a vampire with that smile) and she's a warlock. This left me wondering if she has a Fey Pact or Infernal Pact. I noticed that they couldn't bother to give her a first name. And that "Moonfire" is pretty damn lame for a Realmsian name. Other thoughts.....I like the way NPCs are presented. The details for Curuvar the Brazen inform DMs where he can be found, what his personality traits are and what his motivations are. No, "seeking information about the Dire Wood" is not a motivation. That's called a "goal." If they had bothered to explain why Curuvar is seeking information about the Dire Wood, they might have given us his "motivation." A motive is the reason why someone acts, not the act itself. It might also have been nice to know why he's called the "Brazen". This is good because it leaves DM's in the easy position of roleplaying their own style of eccentric, suspicious wizard who frequents a tavern with the goal of finding those who he can best manipulate into unearthing information about the Dire Wood and Draigdurroch Tower. Thanks, but I can come up with my own lame adventure hooks - I only pay for the good ones. And NPCs aren't supposed to be adventure hooks - they're supposed to be characters. Not a couple of paragraphs of knowing clichés. |
| #13lord_karsusJul 15, 2008 9:36:24 | Well, its not an adventure but a detailed town for a default campaign starting point. I think. -Close enough. I noticed that they couldn't bother to give her a first name. -Maybe her name is 'Lady'? If they had bothered to explain why Curuvar is seeking information about the Dire Wood, they might have given us his "motivation." -There's only 1 reason why anyone would be interested in the Dire Wood. :DShhht new Monster Manual renamed them to Oni. -Which wouldn't change the fact that, in Faerûn, they're known as Ogre-Magi. Or, rather, were. There is 100 years +/- progressing here. |
| #14ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 15, 2008 10:24:17 | Shhht new Monster Manual renamed them to Oni. I have a Colombian co-worker that looks just like that (no pointy ears thought ) |
| #15ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 15, 2008 10:29:17 | -Maybe her name is 'Lady'? That's what I thought also -There's only 1 reason why anyone would be interested in the Dire Wood. Indeed!Which wouldn't change the fact that, in Faerûn, they're known as Ogre-Magi. Or, rather, were. There is 100 years +/- progressing here. Is it me or some one is cooking RECTON? :P |
| #16TheriseJul 15, 2008 11:22:52 | Didn't really care for it. Rather dull, really. I could make better NPCs by rolling on a chart. A warlock who is the town's social elite party-organizer, and one with an open desire to connect with tieflings? And the artwork - would be okay for magazine level one-shots, but definitely subpar for a campaign guide, imo. |

| #18arcas_shanJul 15, 2008 11:48:37 | Shhht new Monster Manual renamed them to Oni. Yep, and it made succubi to baatezu, angels to faceless aliens, eladrin to high elves and many more annoying retcons. And suddenly this is supposed to be how it has always been (yeah, yeah, that's the very nature of a retcon, but this is too much). I'm going to invest into the old 3E material, I hoped, that there was a reason to buy it, but the only one I can see is the swordmage, and that's not enough. |
| #19banpaiJul 15, 2008 12:57:21 | -Close enough. The Ladies full name might very well be on another page, like the town overview under "important NPCs". Dire Wood ...ok :D It´s a retcon ;) I have a Colombian co-worker that looks just like that (no pointy ears thought Awesome. But wait, does he look like an Oni:greenish skin, long yellow teeth, white hair, yellow eyes......or like an elderly humanoid. ? Also does he devour souls? ;) Yep, and it made succubi to baatezu, angels to faceless aliens, eladrin to high elves and many more annoying retcons. And suddenly this is supposed to be how it has always been (yeah, yeah, that's the very nature of a retcon, but this is too much). I'm going to invest into the old 3E material, I hoped, that there was a reason to buy it, but the only one I can see is the swordmage, and that's not enough. Succubi to baatezu, is something I can accept, but I don´t like it, basicly it makes them devils advocate and no longer chaotic temptress. And it´s not tough to change. Angels... well from an artistic point of view they don´t look bad, but I prefer angels with faces. It would be okay if there were some angels with the feature, but....well I liked HoMM5 angels. Giving high elfs and sun elfs a new teleport power from an old connection to their old realm would be strange in the old realms, but after 100 years it could be icorporated into the setting. And I really hope for you that you can grap some cheap 3rd edition books. |
| #20sdskuldJul 15, 2008 13:08:19 | I am intrigued. It sounds like Chapter One will be a ready-to-play campaign, which is helpful for new people wanting to jump right in. I would like to see one of these adventures it refers to as a future excerpt, just to see how much information is given for them. |
| #21arcas_shanJul 15, 2008 13:53:53 | Succubi to baatezu, is something I can accept, but I don´t like it, basicly it makes them devils advocate and no longer chaotic temptress. And it´s not tough to change. Agreed, it's just a minor inconvenience which can be changed pretty easily back (even though it influences everything that will be written about the nine hells and the abyss from now on). What irks me more is the loss of the power to drain life by acts of passion, it wouldn't have been that hard to change that from levels to HP.... Angels... well from an artistic point of view they don´t look bad, but I prefer angels with faces. It would be okay if there were some angels with the feature, but....well I liked HoMM5 angels. Of course they don't look bad, in a new setting I would accept them without problems, but not as replacement for Deva, Planetar and Solar. Giving high elfs and sun elfs a new teleport power from an old connection to their old realm would be strange in the old realms, but after 100 years it could be icorporated into the setting. Their teleport power isn't the problem (a levitation power with the same effects would've fit better to the background they had till now, but who cares, the teleportation power is really cool if you think of it like Half Life Portal), the problem is their name, which was until now reserved for the chaotic good equivalent of angels. If they at least had made a real connection to the celestial eladrin, maybe as dead high elven paladins and priests which got elevated by the gods, but instead they made ghaele, bralani and firre titles of eladrin nobility.... And I really hope for you that you can grap some cheap 3rd edition books. Thanks a lot , unfortunately I've only found the books here normal-priced or already sold-out (darn english imports ), but I hope they become cheaper when the 4E-Books for Faerun are released. |
| #22meldreadJul 15, 2008 14:04:44 | I don't mind the fact that they're throwing Loudwater in there to help new DM's "jump into" the Realms. I just would have hoped they had something that was more interesting, something that even a veteran DM might steal ideas from or use, rather than something so... blah... as that. I'm keeping in mind that these excerpts are what they consider to be 'attention grabbers' - something that makes me want to buy the FRCS. What I read does the exact opposite. It almost put me to sleep. It felt as if the whole goal was to just put up a big sign and say, 'Monsters are over there, kill them!' That really isn't how the Realm's worked, or at least it isn't how I ran the Realms. This shouldn't have changed in the 100 year time jump. To me the Realms was always a place where you were inevitably sucked into a plot somewhere, somehow, even through minor actions. Entering a town could potentially put you right in the middle of a conflict between two guilds. Angering a certain NPC could lead to whole adventures. Going after the Goblin King inevitably led to greater, more sinister plots - there was always webs within webs, and strings attached to strings as a myriad of different organizations vied for power. You might think you're battling some local thieves guild, only to later find out, for example, that they have connections to the Zhents who are trying to expand their power base into the region. Or maybe they have a portal and are funneling slaves back to a Red Wizard in Thay. That friendly old Innkeeper who just happens to give the right advice, always prodding you in one direction or another? He's a Harper. Oh, and he's been manipulating you into a fight against the local lord. The Realms has always been a tangled web of allegiances and connections, both formal and informal. They inevitably lead the PC's to adventure, but there was always a reason behind going to that monster filled ruin outside of loot and XP. That is what I loved so much about the Realms, outside of the lore. I didn't get that feeling reading that entry. ----------------------- The first thing I would have done was give Curuvar the axe. I hate stereotypical wizards, and considering all the work they've done to downplay the Chosen - either by killing them or removing them from the picture - Curuvar just feels like a pale imitation of Elminster. I'd replace him with: Show Byron Moors Manor House Lady Verissa Moonfire |
| #23banpaiJul 15, 2008 14:19:24 | I am intrigued. It sounds like Chapter One will be a ready-to-play campaign, which is helpful for new people wanting to jump right in. There are some adventure options, I expect the same in the FRCG. |
| #24lord_karsusJul 15, 2008 14:21:43 | The first thing I would have done was give Curuvar the axe. | #25nymrohdJul 15, 2008 14:38:54 | Well the AD&D setting had an entire book on shadowdale and an adventure set there in (nice plot, terrible encounter balance). I think all settings need a base camp for the DM who doesn't have time to flesh out his own. Heck if they do a good enough job people who play in other settings might adopt such a location simply because of how expedient it is. |
| #26ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 15, 2008 14:39:14 | Awesome. But wait, does he look like an Oni:greenish skin, long yellow teeth, white hair, yellow eyes......or like an elderly humanoid. ? Also does he devour souls? ;) I mean Lady Moonfire...:embarrass |
| #27hellmuteJul 15, 2008 14:42:53 | I may be crazy but I would have preferred a first look at...Waterdeep. Just to showcase some of the biggest people around now, unless it is all in ruin and only the outskirt towns and villages away from any cetral plot points remain standing... |
| #28rinonalyrna_fathomlinJul 15, 2008 19:58:50 | I noted right away two things: Lady Moonfire's canines are a bit long (almost like a vampire with that smile) ... So I'm not the only one who thought her face was a bit...odd looking. Anyway, I was underwhelmed by this excerpt. I guess these NPCs work well enough as stock quest-givers, but the excerpt doesn't say very much about them as actual characters. |
| #29Mr_MiscellanyJul 15, 2008 21:06:43 | Helllo capnvanI noticed that they couldn't bother to give her a first name. And that "Moonfire" is pretty damn lame for a Realmsian name. We didn’t get her full write up though. There’s supposed to be more on page 17 of the FRCG. As for her name, what’s not to like? Would you prefer more of the same? “Moonflower,” perhaps? :P No, "seeking information about the Dire Wood" is not a motivation. That's called a "goal." If they had bothered to explain why Curuvar is seeking information about the Dire Wood, they might have given us his "motivation." A motive is the reason why someone acts, not the act itself. Was there a reason to get worked up over semantics from an excerpt that I missed? Curuvar is motivated to seek information about the Dire Wood. Seems simple enough. It might also have been nice to know why he's called the "Brazen". Yes, it would. I mean, if the name alone is enough to pick your interest, I’m sure it would catch a player’s interest as well. But lacking that specific information, so what? We know from his description that Curuvar is tightlipped and not prone to sharing information. This just provides a Realms DM with more opportunities to fill in the gaps and make up a good back story for the guy as the players interact with him and maybe pry away at his reticence. And NPCs aren't supposed to be adventure hooks - they're supposed to be characters. Not a couple of paragraphs of knowing clichés. I think you’re overreacting a bit. It almost sounded like you just said NPCs aren’t supposed to be adventure hooks. Now I don’t know about you, but I find it hard not to get my adventures going without the use of NPCs. ::::::: I don’t understand why it’s necessary to waste vital page count giving overlong details about NPCs. This fits a motto of mine (borrowed from an FR Game Designer): Dungeon Masters, not Dungeon Lackeys. Give the basics, tie the NPC into the setting by a few threads and let the DM use these tools to do the rest. Now from my POV, the excerpt is not only doing that, but doing it well. I like the emphasis WotC is placing on getting the characters right into the action from the get go. It’s almost like they wrote the FRCG exactly to my tastes. ;) |
| #30Another_GnomeJul 15, 2008 23:02:43 | That Curuvar chap is totally an Elminster wannabe, but oh well. The tidbits in the excerpt don't really tell anything worthwhile about the setting or the campaign guide, but (you knew I'd say that) hey, at least it's something Realms-related... |
| #31meldreadJul 15, 2008 23:27:27 | Mr_Miscellany- You are overlooking a giant fact: It's boring. Chapter 1: Loudwater is being used to help introduce new DM's into the Realm's. I think that's great. However, it's freakin' boring and flat. This chapter should have been used to stimulate a new DM's mind, to get them to go "Wow, I really want to run this adventure". It should have been used as a way to get veteran DM's involved as well to go, "Wow, I really want to use this NPC, this location, this organization, this idea, or this entire adventure." Chapter 1 should be designed to suck you in and keep you there. This preview is supposed to suck you in and make you want to buy the FRCS. It failed on both counts. Sure, these NPC's direct you "right to the action" but if it's action you want there is little reason to purchase a campaign setting. Just create a single town, in a high magic setting with portals everywhere (think Sigil) and have the PC's constantly jumping off from one dungeon to the next. Chapter 1 was supposed to introduce everyone to the Realm's and give everyone an idea of what an adventure in the Realm's looks like. It was supposed to be more about flavor than action. Even a new DM can easily create that set up. "Here is the nearest ruin / dungeon / cave with monsters. Go defeat them." That's what it boiled down too. There is nothing wrong with playing a mostly combat oriented game, but if that is what you want there is little need for an entire campaign setting. |
| #32Mr_MiscellanyJul 16, 2008 0:18:09 | Hello Meldread,You are overlooking a giant fact: It's boring. Chapter 1: Loudwater is being used to help introduce new DM's into the Realm's. I think that's great. However, it's freakin' boring and flat. How did you get your hands on the whole of Chapter 1? I only got to read one excerpt from it. :::::::::::::::: And for the record: No, the excerpt doesn't actually jump right out of the screen (what will be "the page" in August) and grab you with astounding insights and heady lore sure to make your heart beat faster and your mind race at all the new gaming possibilities. But that's OK (for me). Based on what Chapter 1 looks to be trying to do, I'd say it's doing it correctly. I'll take it, for now. |
| #33gomeztooJul 16, 2008 1:54:55 | It’s almost like they wrote the FRCG exactly to my tastes. ;) You mean bland and dull with stock-characters? I thought the Core campaign was for that? They could really have thought up better NPCs imo. How about NOT giving the wizard a beard and a pointy hat? How about giving him more motivation than 'wants to know stuff'... How about not giving him the single most dumbest catchphrase there is? Seriously. |
| #34StiggerJul 16, 2008 2:08:32 | Seemed a little odd to mention well-to-do people in a town of only 2,000... much less grand balls and the like. Can't see why any frontier town would ever consider someone like that their leader to be honest... unless there's something strange and sinister going on with her. Very disjointed I think is how I would describe it. |
| #35Mr_MiscellanyJul 16, 2008 2:30:14 | Sorry guys, I'm just not interested in jumping on the bandwagon. I like it. And I’m keeping the perspective that it’s just a snapshot. What else can I say? |
| #36colmanJul 16, 2008 3:14:12 | Looks like a sidebar to me, and a somewhat bizarre choice for a preview, but whatever. I suspect the people choosing the previews either aren't involved in the product or that there's a lot of conflict about spoilers and we're getting previews that don't make anyone happy - they're being chosen precisely because they're not very interesting. The last one of these introductory locations I saw was pretty boring too - I think it was the 2e FR boxset with the Shadowdale starter setting. Carefully aimed at newcomers to the Realms and the game as I recall. |
| #37gomeztooJul 16, 2008 3:30:47 | I know it is just a snapshot and that the final product will be interesting enough, but they could really have selected something better as a preview. |
| #38sfdragonJul 16, 2008 3:40:58 | think my two remaining tieflings will stay clear away from her, she gives me the creeps...... mind you she could come back later and kidnap tiefling characters for personal use; male and or female ones... |
| #39nymrohdJul 16, 2008 6:21:27 | It's the secon excerpt we are getting from the FRCG. And it is just bland and tasteless once again, at least to my perception. I am all for 4E FR but the level of change they are seeking to me requires near perfect execution to be preferable to what was, and as of yet I see no sign of that. |
| #40banpaiJul 16, 2008 6:50:11 | I mean Lady Moonfire...:embarrass Oh...well I guess ;) thats way better then. I actually had a former co-worker that looked exactly like the female eladrin fron the PB races capter, I am considering to glue somehing over it....... the look is rather tough on me. |
| #41JohnLynchJul 16, 2008 7:49:20 | I just read the excerpt and its pretty pathetic. This is definitely not of the same quality as the NPCs of Fallcrest in the DMG. This is more like Midgard of a stock mud. Very little story and lots of stock dungeons in the area to go level up in and get cool loot. NOT a place where I'd set an entire campaign (as I felt Fallcrest was definitely a place to set a fun campaign in). If the rest of the chapter is like this I'll have to spend a quite a bit of time on it to get it useable or just simply homerule it out with a completely different version of Loudwater or just avoid the area entirely. |
| #42arcas_shanJul 16, 2008 8:12:20 | If the rest of the chapter is like this I'll have to spend a quite a bit of time on it to get it useable or just simply homerule it out with a completely different version of Loudwater or just avoid the area entirely. You're a true optimist, I don't want to shatter that, but what if the whole book is that way? ![]() |
| #43Lord_ToastJul 16, 2008 8:16:30 | Seemed a little odd to mention well-to-do people in a town of only 2,000... much less grand balls and the like. Can't see why any frontier town would ever consider someone like that their leader to be honest... unless there's something strange and sinister going on with her. Very disjointed I think is how I would describe it. I don't understand, what is odd about a town with 'only' 2 thousand people (not counting travelers) having well-to-do people? The current head of Loudwater is a descendant of the original founder and she wants to throw grand balls. She wants to pretend to be a big time aristocrat that tells me something about her character. The average Loudwater citizen probably rolls theirs eyes when “uppity up” Lady Moonfire announces another “waste of time only for the mighty” Grand Ball. Or maybe the average citizens likes grand balls, “Hey Waterdeep has large parties, why can’t we?” As for the honesty issue, maybe they don’t like her but the Moonfires never done harm to Loudwater before and they managed to defend us from the Zhents in the past…etc…etc… Be a DM, fill in the blanks. Or rewrite it. This snapshot, while though an unusual choice to showcase the new Realms, is a starter town to new inexperience players and dungeonmasters. And finally, what is in a name or nickname? There is nothing wrong with Moonfire as a Realmsian name, the continent of Toril is a big place with many diverse cultures and some new ones too. I have most of the old material from the late 1980’s up to now, I can find many names that look funny to me but I learned to live with it. |
| #44JohnLynchJul 16, 2008 8:20:54 | what if the whole book is that way? This is the first bit of information on 4e FR that I've read that I've disliked. I liked all of the Countdown articles and even the Amn excerpt. So I'm not going to be that pessimistic at this stage. |
| #45capnvanJul 16, 2008 10:00:10 | I don't understand, what is odd about a town with 'only' 2 thousand people (not counting travelers) having well-to-do people? The current head of Loudwater is a descendant of the original founder and she wants to throw grand balls. Well, let's start with the obvious. I forget the year at the time of publication, but 2E's The North boxed set describes Loudwater as a town of 4,000. The 3E FRCS attributes a figure of 8,137. Thus, in a little over a century, the town has lost three quarters of its population. Not exactly indicative of a town on the rise, with lots of wealth available for frippery. Secondly, in a town of 2,000 in the middle of the North, in a time when, WoTC has made clear, trade and contact between the "points of light" is even less common than it was in any earlier edition of the Realms, the vast majority of inhabitants of Loudwater are going to be focused on basic survival. They'll be farmers, artisans, hunters, trappers, etc. Those people don't go to "grand balls." They go to bed when the sun sets, and rise with the sun as well. They have neither the time, nor energy, nor disposable income to take part in "grand balls." It's difficult to throw even one ball, let alone a series of them when you can only invite perhaps 20 people. There are other problems with Lady Moonfire. It's important to remember that "Lady Moonfire" may be a descendant of the original lord of Loudwater, but a century earlier, the Lord of Loudwater was Nanathlor Greysword, originally from Nimbral. He clearly was not a member of that family, rather, according to FR5, Loudwater "needed him." That suggests that whoever Lady Moonfire's family is, it wasn't as important a century before. More importantly, any manor house built two hundred years ago could not have been the seed from which Loudwater grew, given that the town came into being around a bridge, built by the dwarf Iirkos Stoneshoulder 1,000 years ago, and the pool which serves as a river harbor (also FR5 & the North boxed set). So, basically, either WoTC has decided to simply chuck all of the history out the door, or Lady Moonfire makes close to zero canonical sense. You may have found many names that look funny, but they belong in the Realms. Realms characters tend to have names like Elaith Craulnober, Volothamp Geddarm, Khelben "the Blackstaff" Arunsun. Those names are indicative of their "Realmsishness." Not "Lady Moonfire." That could come from literally any RPG. If WoTC is going to offer 3 supplements for the Realms for the span of this edition, it would have been nice if they could have tried just a little bit harder. |
| #46uzzyJul 16, 2008 10:10:31 | So.. yeah. They killed Mystra and Eilistraee for that. I mean, the dialogue from the NPC's seems like something you'd click accept quest to. Let's take this for example.“Yes, I did indeed sneak into the barrow. By Mystra’s lost spell, you wouldn’t believe what a dull race goblins are! My wizardry easily incapacitated them. However, I didn’t find what I wanted. I took the horn totem as a souvenir. Tell you what—if you recover the matching skull totem from the barrow, I’ll tell you the truth about the Ogre King.” It's a fetch and carry quest to unlock part 2! Another interesting bit is how the de-facto head of a small town is not at all interested in actually running it, but rather just holding parties. Where she flirts with Tieflings. As someone said on Candlekeep, "By Mystra's lost spell, that was bad" That level of writing and NPC creation would be something I'd be embarrassed about if I created, as a fan. |
| #47JohnLynchJul 16, 2008 10:16:13 | You're a true optimist, I don't want to shatter that, but what if the whole book is that way? Well I hope you're happy. You've gone and gotten me all worrying about the quality of this book now :P After all, what if the Amn section (which was by no means flawless) one of the best parts? |
| #48TheriseJul 16, 2008 10:17:38 | I just read the excerpt and its pretty pathetic. Frankly, I thought Fallcrest was a little disappointing too. I didn't see any NPCs there that "leaped off the page" as being interesting or exciting. The layout was good, and it had a great map, but the NPCs lacked flavor and the town was a little flat. Fallcrest didn't feel like either the Realms or Greyhawk, really (although I realize that it's a brand new core setting, so that's neither here nor there); it just felt super-generic. Contrast Fallcrest with Hommlet, or Saltmarsh, or the first setting we got for the Realms when they were new - the Moonshaes (then Waterdeep!). Those had colorful, cool NPCs that begged to be used. For something printed in the core books, and meant to entice DMs/players to play the game, I would've thought they'd give us something with some punch - some verve. But like the snippet of Loudwater, they're either choosing somewhat boring things to show off (which doesn't make sense) or it's just lost something in the update. Feels like they've chosen to "punt", really. |
| #49lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 10:19:17 | -Just to throw it out there, Moonfire is an established thing in the Forgotten Realms. A manifestation of Selûne's favor, a white energy that turns into a milk-like substance with numerous magical abilities. So, I don't see what the big deal is here. |
| #50JohnLynchJul 16, 2008 10:24:12 | Frankly, I thought Fallcrest was a little disappointing too. I didn't see any NPCs there that "leaped off the page" as being interesting or exciting. It could have been my expansion of the NPCs that I particularly liked (for example I find that I quite like both Captain Kelfem and the innkeeper of Winterhaven in Keep on the Shadowfell, although its largely because of how I've played them). I thought up a plot where Show the tiefling was the patron of the players and for most of the adventure would be working on making the town hate its Lord because he and his employees were protecting the town from various menaces while the Lord's men did nothing. Then at the end of the campaign the tiefling would finally rebel against the lord and gain half the town. It would then be up to the players to either side with the Lord or side with their patron. I thought that made the tiefling and the entire situation quite interesting, and it was all based on the info from the DMG. |
| #51uzzyJul 16, 2008 10:28:22 | Am I the only one who noticed that Curuvar is found in a freaking Tavern? A Tavern!?!!? So, the party assembles in a Tavern, gets talked down to by a very stereotypical wizard, who asks them to go fetch something. It's what I'd expect from a twelve year old text based adventure game. By Mystra's lost spell, I'm glad my money is going Paizo's way, who know how to make adventures. |
| #52lord_karsusJul 16, 2008 10:29:34 | Am I the only one who noticed that Curuvar is found in a freaking Tavern? A Tavern!?!!? -He had a hard day, and is kicking back with a cold brewsky or two. |
| #53gomeztooJul 16, 2008 10:31:13 | You know, that catch phrase is already majorly annoying me. Mystra doesn't loose spells!!! |
| #54uzzyJul 16, 2008 10:31:46 | No harm in that. Every Elminster knock off could do with a cold brew now and then, probably to get over the hordes of females throwing themselves at him. My point was that the 'quest', such as it is, starts in a Tavern. That's like No.1 on a list of things not to do in a quest. |
| #55TheriseJul 16, 2008 10:36:27 | My point was that the 'quest', such as it is, starts in a Tavern. That's like No.1 on a list of things not to do in a quest. My players would laugh out loud if I presented them with a wizard in a pointy hat, in a tavern, who offered them a quest. They'd probably even say "wait... is he a mysterious stranger too?" I mean really... even his robe has moons and stars on it. It's like the Saturday morning cartoon version of the Realms. -Just to throw it out there, Moonfire is an established thing in the Forgotten Realms. A manifestation of Selûne's favor, a white energy that turns into a milk-like substance with numerous magical abilities. So, I don't see what the big deal is here. She's a warlock (which doesn't mix well with Selune), and apparently -openly- a warlock and a noble. Her characterization is just a little too cardboard cutout, and it doesn't seem well thought out. In a fairly isolated town with a population of only 2000, she throws grand balls/parties? Who's going to come? Nobles don't just throw money away on parties without other nobles or important people to invite. Other towns are fairly far away (Secomber and Llorkh are each more than 100 miles away), and in a town that size they'd all be farmers, laborers, and craftspeople of some sort. The name is really the least of it, I think. |
| #56JohnLynchJul 16, 2008 10:40:52 | I mean really... even his robe has moons and stars on it. Clearly he's secretly a spy for some evil faction and is simply seeking out adventurers to dupe into doing his evil bidding. |
| #57TheriseJul 16, 2008 10:44:04 | Clearly he's secretly a spy for some evil faction and is simply seeking out adventurers to dupe into doing his evil bidding. Honestly, my players would think that he'd be anything other than a wizard. |

| #60meldreadJul 16, 2008 12:58:05 | Hello Meldread, I am looking at this excerpt as an advertisement. When a company wants you to buy their product they don't put out some boring ad that you'll never remember. They want to draw you in, grab your attention, and motivate you into purchasing what they are trying to sell. That is what these excerpts (IMO) are trying to do. They are trying to provoke intrest in the new FRCS, to motivate people to go out and purchase it. As I pointed out, and you more-or-less agreed with, it was flat and boring. I am acting on the assumption that this is what WotC considered "great" stuff from Chapter 1. I mean, realistically, if you're going to leak excerpts from the new FRCS to an already largely skeptical public, you'd want it to be good, right? I mean, good gods - WotC can't be lacking this much in creativity. WotC went through all the trouble to deal with Elminster and the other Chosen (something I agreed with), only to... create a bad imitation? |

You've gone and gotten me all worrying about the quality of this book now :P After all, what if the Amn section (which was by no means flawless) one of the best parts? Sorry. I didn't like anthing they released so far for the new Forgotten Realms, so I'm through with them, but I will try to encourage you:Wizards of the Coast has the crappiest marketing I've ever seen. A few months ago they released "Threats of the Galaxy" and made two previews. One I remember was an uncool protocol droid, the other was a generic NPC thug I could've created in one minute, called the "brute". I didn't buy it, because I didn't really need a manual of monsters for Star Wars (everything important is in the rulebook). Now someone made an index here in the forums of all the cool stuff players and DM's can get out of the book. I instantly ordered it from Amazon and can't wait until it's delivered. So if you like what you read about the realms so far, and can live with an evil cliché Amn and many senseless slaughtered gods you can still hope, that the wizard is simply unable to release a decent preview.:D |

I can certainly appreciate that. I just wasn't too impressed with this excerpt on the whole--honestly, I would have liked it better if it told us more about the characters themselves. Hey, I've said before I'll pick stuff out that I like and use it in a different context if it truly grabs me. |

| #105reneshatJul 16, 2008 23:14:00 | This preview saddened me greatly. Until I read it, I was pretty much assuming I would pick up the new book. I now find myself in a situation where I will have to do more than simply "flip through" the new book before I can determine whether or not I will be getting the book. This is far, far below the quality that I expect out of my FR material, and the last of my good will and optimism for the future has dissipated. I will still probably pick up the Player's Guide for the crunch, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Up until now I was looking forward to being able to do organized play in the Realms. Now I'm not even sure that I will be doing that. I know the intent of the preview was to get us excited, but it only makes me feel disheartened. Either the person that determines the previews needs to have that responsibility removed from his oh-so-capable shoulders, or there really is nothing to look forward to in the new book. |

| #11118DELTAJul 16, 2008 23:41:35 | Excerpts: Loudwater Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide Show In today’s Forgotten Realms preview, we show off an encounter in the town of Loudwater, from Chapter 1 (Loudwater) of the forthcoming Campaign Guide. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The town of Loudwater sits at the confluence of the Delimbiyr and Grayflow rivers. The forested shoulders of the Star Mounts rise above the town in the northwestern sky. These cloud-veiled peaks remind the townspeople that beyond the city’s walls stretch wild lands, where deadly monsters threaten the unwary. Merchants, caravan guards, local craftsfolk, hunters, farmers, and retired adventurers treat the Green Tankard Tavern in Loudwater as a second home. In the tavern’s common room, talk turns to tales of hostile tribes and barrows glimpsed through mists; folk speak warily of goblins in the Southwood, of the serpent folk of Najara, and of ancient, ruined kingdoms. The tavern attracts young and old with its warm company and tall tales. But before buying an ale for one of the inn’s regulars, a visitor should think carefully. Many adventures have started from stories exchanged over cheap ale and greasy food, but not all have ended with the glorious exploits of which bards sing. An old story or a wrinkled map could be the doorway to adventure—or the path to a quick death. |
| #112Mr_MiscellanyJul 16, 2008 23:53:02 | I guess there's more to Curuvar and his doings than we (no...the rest of you) thought. :P I suspected they would be using the same format as the H1: Keep on the Shadowfell adventure, and I was right. Good thing too....because you get more information about (and dialogue for) the various NPCs the characters get to interact with. Thanks for posting those links, Delta. |
| #113naexJul 17, 2008 0:01:26 | Well the AD&D setting had an entire book on shadowdale and an adventure set there in (nice plot, terrible encounter balance). I think all settings need a base camp for the DM who doesn't have time to flesh out his own. Heck if they do a good enough job people who play in other settings might adopt such a location simply because of how expedient it is. The second boxed set did that, the first (gray box) only had a map of shadowdale, and a list of residents with no real detail given. The two adventures are set in Myth Drannor. And their were no statted NPCs anywhere in those books. It took years to build all the lore that now exists. IMO, they are leaving it to the DMs (even new ones) to fill in the info of motivations and abilities to reflect their own ideas. For instance, if the wizard is interested in the Dire Woods, then maybe it is because of the remains of Karsus there, or maybe there is a fabled portal nearby that leads to an Elvin treasure trove. And why do we need to know there levels and powers, do your PCs run around slaying every resident of a town? Why waste space on info that is never used? |
| #114JohnLynchJul 17, 2008 0:03:57 | By Mystra's lost spells, Curuvar still seems very lame ;) Now he's gone from cliched old wizard to the cliched bumbling old wizard :P However this is certainly better then either NPCs and it seems like there's the potential to weave the different threads and dungeons into a cohesive whole. |

I can understand that Chapter 1 is meant to be ready to play, and that these are just quest NPC's, but if this is meant to appeal to newbies, shouldn't it be showing them the very best of the Realms? Instead we get a bumbling old wizard in a tavern who sends them on a fetch quest. Is that really what newbies want from DnD? The encounter isn't much to speak about either. Seriously. Burnt Offerings is far better as that's got a far more interesting goblin raid. |

On the River Delimbiyr (which rolls into the Sea of Swords near Daggerford), west of Llorkh, south of the High Forest, etc. Although, strangely enough, apparently the town is oriented on a strict north-south axis, with the city walls managing at points to run in a completely straight line east-west. Well, at least, judging from the encounter map in the second preview. That's some fine cartography, there. ![]() |
| #122IluvrienJul 17, 2008 6:40:56 | By The Lost Ever Watchful Gaze of Helm....... For some reason I kept and keep hearing "By the Power of Greyskull" when I read Curuvar's cliche... sorry, catchphrase. Well, paint me dramatically underwhelmed by these excepts. Firstly I don't count them in similar fashion to the Countdown articles, not least because the Countdowns were the Preview and this is supposed to be the meat of the setting that they were leading up to in the first place. Even taking into account that these have both (strangely) been from the pre-made adventure chapter rather than the "body" of the text so to speak the lack of character detail (in the NPCs article), sorry the "room for DM modification" renders these two almost entirely bland to me. One way this might have been rectified would be to show Lady Moonfire's entire write up (the one referenced as being on page 17) to outline her as being more than just a encounter at a ball or an bodyguarding job. It strikes me that these previews would have been a superb chance for WotC to jump up and down on a platfrom in front of what is, forgive me for saying so, a captive audience shouting "Look at this, look at us! We can be all things to all people, we have improved on the past. Buy this because it is better!". A thin line to walk but a golden chance nontheless and I do have to wonder why they didn't take it. |

They need to work on the details a little though - the eschewing responsibility to hold balls for a small town just doesn't work for me. As for the male NPC... He was very very bland. |
| #126KhaeliethJul 17, 2008 7:28:04 | Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit silly sending someone into a potentially lethal place just because you're holding back some tidbits of information? Sounds WoWy to me. Hate the whole exclamation mark above NPC's in D&D. |
| #127storm_silverhandJul 17, 2008 7:30:35 | Heya,Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit silly sending someone into a potentially lethal place just because you're holding back some tidbits of information? Sounds WoWy to me. Hate the whole exclamation mark above NPC's in D&D. This is part of an adventure, we believe. So why would this be a problem? |
| #128gomeztooJul 17, 2008 7:39:54 | Maybe I'm just easy to please... But I'm happy that the first female NPC for the new Realms I see happens to be the lord of the town and bisexual. Well, it doesn't say that explicitly. It does leave room for the DM (quite a lot of room - ok, planetsized). Still, bisexual women we have had (and will have) aplenty in the Realms. Bisexual men, otoh... But I'm working on that :P Gomez |
| #129KhaeliethJul 17, 2008 7:47:55 | I'm thinking realistically. This is an adventure, not an MMO quest. Kill X monsters and I will give/tell you about Y. Fair enough with the odd one, but if this sets the bar... My way would be that the adventurers would need to - Explore Southwood, battle some goblins, and either track the survivors back to their camp or use Charm Person or Intimidation. or - Gather Information Check (low) to find out who might know where the place is, followed by a Diplomacy Check (high) or money to persuade Curuvar (or someone else) to enlighten them on where the Barrow. Alternatively, they could perhaps procure a map with directions to the Barrow. Either way would allow them to perhaps get ahold of the Skull Totem, as it's not exactly inconspicous (sp?). Then have that give a bonus on persuading them to haul information out of Curuvar. But that might just be me that thinks that would've been better. |

Fair enough with the odd one, but if this sets the bar... or... sneak the guy by night. Hold him. Rob him. Interrogate him. and finally kill him. So you won't need to do is messy work he is asking for. Why would an adventurer work for "information". We want money. We want beer ! We want girls all night ! or men... depends on your desire... ! From what I see, the FRCS will be riddled with more encounters and more tables and less history ! For me, 4ed resume to that: Tables. Encounters. |
| #131KhaeliethJul 17, 2008 9:07:18 | Another thing that dawned on me was adventurers could use a public library. Think there's a few in the Realms. Search Check, Knowledge (Western Heartlands). Bob's your uncle. But yeah, sneaking the fellow by night would work too! Bit unorthodox if you're Good, but as alignment's no bother in 4th... |
| #132StiggerJul 17, 2008 9:40:04 | Public library in a town of 2,000? You on crack again Khae? :P ;) Though for the record, I was kinda hearing "By Grabthar's Hammer" myself. :D |

| #135lord_karsusJul 17, 2008 17:52:49 | -This dude better not start messing with forces he doesn't understand...I hate it when people get a little...too inquisitive for their own good. |
| #136hellmuteJul 17, 2008 17:57:13 | -This dude better not start messing with forces he doesn't understand...I hate it when people get a little...too inquisitive for their own good. A bit territorial are we? |
| #137lord_karsusJul 17, 2008 18:08:18 |
-Yes. In multiple ways. |
| #138hellmuteJul 17, 2008 18:36:15 | -Yes. In multiple ways. I am still refreshing myself with what used to be the Realms to understand what changes are taking place. |
| #139lord_karsusJul 17, 2008 18:42:27 |
-In that case, I'd suggest you go look up what's in the Dire Woods. |
| #140StiggerJul 17, 2008 19:39:16 | Absolutely nothing of importance. Whatsoever. :P ;) |
| #141naexJul 17, 2008 19:40:29 | I'll save him the trip, the Dire Woods hide the physical remains of a certain would be god. Used to hide the Karse stone as well, or so I hear, but rumor says it has been taken. If you want to go relieve yourself on the shattered corpse of an overreaching archwizard, just look for the petrified forest... Watch for liches while there though, at least one has been encountered in the area. |
| #142Ra-TielJul 17, 2008 19:45:49 | -Yes. In multiple ways. And I thought you were speaking from personal experience. ;) :P |
| #143naexJul 17, 2008 19:49:37 | And I thought you were speaking from personal experience. ;) :P He was, the Dire Woods were his last glimpse of the realms before he crashed and burned. |
| #144lord_karsusJul 17, 2008 20:33:00 | -I'm sensing a general negativity, here... |
| #145naexJul 17, 2008 20:36:37 | Not negativity, I just like to mock gods (and would be gods) after all someone has to keep them humble. |
| #146Ra-TielJul 17, 2008 20:43:42 | He was, the Dire Woods were his last glimpse of the realms before he crashed and burned. I know. Hence the " ;) ". ;) Lord Karsus speaking about mages who mess with things they don't understand somehow reminds me of this: |

| #149StiggerJul 18, 2008 2:54:19 | Feeble excuses from a minion of Shar. |
| #150naexJul 18, 2008 2:57:02 | Are you calling me a minion of Shar? I would never serve any god, much less a Netherese one. I respect the teachings of Auppensor, but that is as far as I will go. Oh, I see you meant LK. |
| #151StiggerJul 18, 2008 3:32:35 | Indeed... poor, failed godling, formerly quasi-heroic (despite the insanity and megalomania) and very tragic figure, now retconned minion of Shar that he is... so sad. ![]() But, despite that, I'm still laughing at his expense over the matter. :D |
| #152KhaeliethJul 18, 2008 3:36:15 | Karsus' last words were "woops!" |
| #153sfdragonJul 18, 2008 3:37:24 | She's interested in tieflings because she eats them.;) eaten or worse, binded to her whim....... whether for mentioned tiefling is male or female............ |

| #155KhaeliethJul 18, 2008 5:37:10 | Public library in a town of 2,000? You on crack again Khae? :P ;) It's 9000 (or 8000, don't have the book on me) in 3rd ed. 2000 in 2nd ed. ;p And it's the best Peruvian you can get ahold of, I'll let you know! |
| #156lord_karsusJul 18, 2008 11:10:02 | -Enough about me...Let's talk about them. ;) |
| #157StiggerJul 18, 2008 12:42:50 | The 2,000 figure was from the preview as I recall, not prior sources... guess something bad happened to wipe out 3/4 of the population. ;) |
| #158lord_karsusJul 18, 2008 13:08:23 | -Spellplague. |
| #159StiggerJul 18, 2008 13:17:17 | Yeah, but 3/4 of the population? That's far worse than the black death hit Europe... there had better be a collapse of fuedalism included in there somewhere. Got a feeling I'm going to have a hard time swallowing this one... |
| #160ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 18, 2008 13:19:22 | Yeah, but 3/4 of the population? | #163ody_saraph_of_karsusJul 18, 2008 13:34:13 | Go make some sangria and stfu. :P :D I'm Prican I don't do Sangrias I do Rum! :D |

| #168StiggerJul 18, 2008 13:41:33 | Nope, back to work for me... got a lot to do before tonight's game. |
