| #3The_SilverswordMay 20, 2010 8:05:32 | Definitely not someone Id like to meet in a dark alley. The article doesnt specificaly say it, but Im assuming this beholder is Plaguechanged, or at the very least has a spellscar. |
| #4sfdragonMay 20, 2010 8:23:01 | nice |
| #5JorunhastMay 20, 2010 11:00:22 | Although I was initially intrigued by the idea of a new article by Ed Greenwood, I stopped reading after the first mention of "spellplague" as this is of no use to my game (which is 4E, just not the 4E Realms garbage). So, still no chance of a DDI subscription from me, unless the articles are written to be used in a more general way. |

If a DM is willing to do some minor editing then this article can be used in what ever edition a person prefers. Heck, a DM could change the location and place it in any city in FR or Eberron or Ravenloft or homebrew campaign setting. |
| #7drunken_master_nowakMay 20, 2010 11:54:39 | Excellent! Not only are beholders my absolute favorite monsters, but my newly-paragon party just happens to be in Waterdeep for the foreseeable future... |

Ed Greenwood doesn't have to write this stuff, he's got plenty of other work else where. And that's your only reason for not liking it?, or even reading the rest of it? It's one thing to say I don't like this because it was poorly written, or the adventure is scaled wrong, or the NPCs seem too cookie cutter, but to just say oh it's Spellplague garbage so I don't like it, In that case you're not going to find any new lore of use to you. If you're that lacking in imagination that you can't find some ideas in there for your own use with a little retooling, then you really don't need to be playing D&D at all! |

If you want me to give examples of why I feel 4E Realms are little more than garbage, I will be glad to do so -again- just as I have before in other threads. Just say the word (although I didn't go into detail the first time because it would have been drifting off topic). In any case, why should I have any respect for the current design team, when they showed no respect for the original fanbase? And just as an aside, apparently just because I dislike everything associated with the spellplague, you personally insult me by saying that I have no creativity? Thanks ever so much for jumping to conclusions. |

| #12JorunhastMay 25, 2010 16:44:44 | Play/post nice people. I'm not the one who made a personal attack. |

| #14lionlemurMay 25, 2010 17:45:00 | This wasn't Greenwood's best Realms article, okay. But it was fun anyhow. I just wish WotC would give some time for FLAVOR - wines, food, trees, gemstones, legends and lore, religious practices, and NEWS, most of all NEWS! all specifiic to the Realms the way they used to dispense it. Having combat stats are nifty, but I'll probably need to fit that to my PC level anyhow. But knowing what king/overlord/etc is plotting what vs whatever power, or that spider dung is freshest from some certain part of the Dales, or about some ghost from some ancient dungeon -- priceless. |
| #15The_SilverswordMay 26, 2010 6:21:28 | Actually if you look, Ed puts a lot of little nuggets of lore in those articles, like The Dreamdals:hallucinatory liquers of mysterious make Gladglee: A Realms name for charades. Skullstrike: A Realms word for croquet. Starfall: a hallucinatory herb. Thamrall: A Realms version of polo. Thorthen:A melon cultivated in Sembia with a thick mauve skin, and savory orange-fleshed marrows that taste like roast turkey flesh. Also called 'meat melons". |
| #16lionlemurMay 26, 2010 15:14:53 | Actually if you look, Ed puts a lot of little nuggets of lore in those articles, like Awesome. Were all those in this article? How did I miss it? Or are those over the course of several articles? I adore Ed. Wish the rest of WotC were as flavor friendly. |
| #17The_SilverswordMay 26, 2010 18:53:22 | No, those werent from this article, I believe they were from the first 2 articles, I ussually just jot stuff like this down with out making a note of the source, I need to start keeping track of that as well. But any way, this article has some nice little tidbits as well. The one that really caught my eye was: "The Mad Mage perished- or so most folk believe- before the purpose of the beholder was ever revealed." That leads me to believe that Halaster is not dead! Just most folk believe he is, of course it could also be read as, "most folk believe the purpose of the beholder was never revealed", but I choose to take it to mean that Halaster is alive ALIVE!!! ALIVE I TELL YOU!!!!! |
| #18gomeztooMay 31, 2010 3:11:43 | I have to admit that 'meat melons' make me think of other things... things that are, ine Ed's tales, customary covered in glow dust. Ahem. As side note, the Spellplague is only a foot note in the last EotR article. You can use the villain within pretty well without involving the Spellplague. And I think Halaster is dead. In a 'we can revive him any moment we need to, as this IS fantasy' kind of dead. Why else would Flamsterd be looking for his soul shards? Gomez |

Ahem. lol you said "meat melons" ![]() You know, that Beholder reminds me alot of Halaster, giving leads to these adventureres, sending them out on these crazy quests, eating people. Thats got Halaster written all over it! Maybe this Beholder is one of these Shards of Halaster? |
