Has there ever been a satisfactory explanation for revenants as a PC race in the Forgotten Realms, in canon or otherwise?

I'm starting an LFR game, where revenants are explicitly legal, and thus can't be houseruled away. That I'm running LFR is non-negotiable. One of my players wants to play a revenant. I'm all right with that: I'm just looking for a sensible way to treat the character in-game.

nope there hasnt in 4e fr no.
treat them like they were in previous editions and undead who cant rest unti a wrong that caused them to die is corrected. although whatever that might be is up to you.

the current god of the dead Kelemvor does not like undead and thus wont create them, however Jergal might as he's scribe of the damned.

Cyric might create one just to test the murderer that killed the guy...

Shar might do so, to infest a selunite temple or raise unholy heck in Waterdeep
Bane would create them to strengthen an army so that the enemy would fear.

Sigh, doesnt anyone know their Realmslore!? Read up on Hoar (the most awesome diety in the whole Forgotten Realms BTW). Hoar, or Assuran as he is sometimes known, frequently raised, or allowed his priests to raise those killed wrongly as Revenants.
So revenents would work pretty much the same as in core, but they wouldnt have the silly ravens claws or whatever.

I mentioned Assuran's boss... so that interns means Assuran and Loviatar

also.... Beshaba and Tempus could make them too

Hmmmm....because it's LFR I'm thinking the Raven Queen can't be involved so I would second Hoar or even Jergal as the deity to raise them. Also, could be a twist of fate as the souls travel to the Fugal Plane, something happens where they get "swapped" and the interaction creates a problem that sends one back to the other body?

Although Divine interaction is the most easiest route to take, other ways can be used such as the one I just mentioned, a Necromancer's experiment, a cleric's resurrection ritual gone wrong, or even the death of the 1st body at the hands of an undead creature which during the "turning" gained it's own control and broke from the normal way of the undead.

you could also say it was a soul with a strong will for revenge that death itself could not keep him or her down

I had a revenant in a campaign created with the Claw of the Revenancer, a minor artifact from City of the Spider Queen (page 129) that allows it's wearer to create revenants 3/day. The wearer of the Claw controlled them, instead of they singlemindedly pursue their killer. That is, they're 3rd edition revenants, but what the hell. Kiaransalee might have faded from existence, but not her creations.
