#1 bronzebeard Jun 16, 2009 10:02:39	So... I was wondering if any of you know of insulting nicknames for races in the Forgotten Realms (If you think about it that should have been quite common). I know of ears for elf to human insults (work both ways). And tusk something for half-orc but I'm not sure. And that's it. I ran out. Anyone knows more? P.S. That is only for RP sake. I'm not encouraging racism in RL. =D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Edit: I decided to compile the words thrown in here. Dunno what that would be good for. However, I know that I for one will enjoy that extra edge for well based Rp. Orcish vs. Dwarves Dglinkarz - '' (its considered VERY insulting). Drow vs. non-Drow Iblith - 'excrement'. Elf, gold vs. Elf, moon Dross - ''. All vs. Elf, moon Gray - 'gray' (used by a human or dwarf and a deadly insult from the lip of another elf, normally associated with moon elves only). Elf vs. Half Elf Biir – ‘Waste/Garbage’ Zenar – ‘Less than Half’(Slang)’ Round Ear Monkey Face Elf vs. Elf Dhaerow - ‘Face of Shadow/Traitor’. Lorkh – ‘Savage Butchers who Lost Their Elven Nature Long Ago Through Such Behavior’. Vyshaan - ‘Power-Mad’ Dwarf Beard White-Hand - (Insult to an Ark’Faern). #3 old_sage Jun 16, 2009 11:08:03	Another is the gold elf insult for moon elves, simply calling them dross. From the latter pages of Elfshadow. 'Twas when Arilyn was disguised as a gold elf cleric of Mielikki, and was fishing for info from a friend in the Watch. Also, early on in Elfshadow, Arilyn was a bit offended when a human looked at her and said "You're a gray, aren't you?" "Gray Elf" was a derogatory term used by a human or dwarf and a deadly insult from the lip of another elf. It is normally associated with moon elves only.

#7 markustay63 Jun 16, 2009 16:13:30	Precisely. And just so I'm actually contributing to the thread, the word in Hulgorkyn (Orcish) I was looking for was "Dglinkarz", which is what Orcs call Dwarves, and I'm pretty sure is their word for something else, as well (its considered VERY insulting).

Jalouk (or something like that) in drow was fool or some such as I recall from BG... and I've had a female dwarven fighter refer to a male elf wizard as "pointy in only two places, like most elven men" before (were both players though).

#10 Stigger Jun 16, 2009 17:33:23	Usually half-breed was enough to come off as pretty insulting. Its something my group tends to avoid though unless its in interparty banter. Just going off of Volo's, I didn't really ever get the idea the Realms was that racist a place to be. Classist, sure, I could see that, but not really racist in the usual connotation it has here.

Offal is intestines, entrails, guts, the waste products of a slaughtered beast, so I guess the intention is "carrion". Elves call Orcs "burners", for obvious reasons. This was mentioned in City Of Ravens Bluff. "Wog" was used against Mar people in the Utter East, in Faces Of Deception. This seems to be a rare case of Human vs Human , and rather unfortunate, since it's a real-world racist insult as well. I've heard "round ear" for Elves vs Humans & Dwarves, but that was only on these boards in reference to Eldreth Veluuthra. I can't confirm it as a canon insult. Hmm, trust Elves to have the most racist insults.

I've heard 'Rothides' applied to trolls, but I don't recall where or by whom (probably in a Drizzt novel). Calling an Amnite a 'Sembian' is considered an insult (and probably vice-versa). The Amnians have only a slightly less-tarnished mercantile reputation then then Sembians. Neither likes to be called a 'Calishite Merchant'. :P

Likewise, most Dwarves don't have any problems with Gnomes (they like them, in most cases, both being "Races of Stone"), but they don't want to be called Gnomes. They're Dwarves, not Gnomes!

The way Bruenor uses the saying is similar to something like " Sunday is definitely father's day in the U.S.A or I'm the king of Scotland". Plus I don't recall ever reading where Bruenor applied the comment to any other dwarf than himself and definitely not in a racial slur.

Two, actually. :p Both published by DC, there's the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons series (actually set in the Forgotten Realms, based in Waterdeep, but roaming as far as Calimshan) and the Forgotten Realms series (set all over the place, with a teleporting ship). These crossed over with eachother and the Spelljammer comic once or twice. And they were awesome. They mixed bonkers fun with serious storylines, good stories with interesting characters, high-powered events with small-scale stuff, all with good FR flavour tied into the setting. The novels could really have learnt from the comics. But it really didn't help some of FR's bad reputation though: an avatar of Selune runs a tavern in Waterdeep, Labelas acts utterly insane during the Time of Troubles, though these things worked in the context of the comics. I'm rereading the FR series currently, since I completed my collection and they're so great! :D (Then there's the adaptations of Salvatore's Drizzt novels, and a few stray promo pieces.) EDIT: This may just be my own opinion, and not necessarily shared by others. ;)
