Forgetten Realms 4e Map Alternate: (work in progress as of 5/12/2010)

img85.imageshack.us/i/darkangelsrealm.jp...

List of changes/alternations thus far:

Towns/Citys Added/Altered:
Citadel Felbar
Hlondeth
Myth Glaurach
Ormpetarr
Rathgaunts Mote
Sadrach's Splinter
Ss'inthee'ssaree
Surkh

Regions Added/Altered:
Amtar Forest
Isle of Luiren
Mhair Archipelago (inc. Black & Mhair Jungles and Serpentes)
Nagawater
Ostoria
The Colossal Kingdom (Hoardlands)
The Shaar
Underchasm
Vilhon Wilds
-Other minor alternations.

Note: This map was created for my own personal campaign which i figured I'd share it. While I like some of the new 4e changes, there was a few I didn't like. I brought back a few old favorites such as Serpentes and altered some of the rediculous things such as the size of the Underchasm. I also added or altered addition parts of the map such as the inclusion of The Sharr which isn't part of the "desolate." part.

I plan on doing more detailed writing and maps similair to "Cormyr" found in Dragon magazine. I may post them as well if this is well recieved.

Enjoy.

Interesting, thank you for sharing. I for one am interested to seeing what else you have planned. You got some interesting changes on there. Looks like a piece Luiren survived, I like it! Look foward to seeing more.

Thanks for the compliments. The Colossal kingdom will be the first area I'll be working on. The name it's self is one taken from Realms lore. It is a Giant Kingdom like Ostoria.

Some background that lead me to do this: I very much like the fact that the Age of Humanity is over in 4e Realms and that there’s much more diversity amongst other races and kingdoms (was so sick of Elvin retreat). However, there are things I didn't like. Underchasm??? Was it necessary for it to be that big or did the creators get lazy and couldn’t think of a story line?

Here is some of my reasoning for the changes:

A few cities survived such as Hlondeth (it’s original, filled with Yunti and its just plain badass, as is Serpentes and its Jungles). Citadel Felbar too… from reading to many books I’ve grown fond of those dwarves!!!

Regions…

Amatar Forest… Isolated, I only thought that mother nature would take some land back in a healthy way as opposed to the Sharr Desolate.

Isle of Luiren… the poor Halfling need a little place to call their own. It also gives the Dwarves of the Rift an ally in trade being they are somewhat cut off. Besides, I think it makes for a much more interesting map in general.

Mhair Archipelago…  I like it but I liked Serpentes so much more. I imagine Serpentes becoming a major power player and even becoming more involved in trade and world events allowing then to place spies everywhere.

Nagawater…  made the map more interesting and has some good adventure qualities too it.

Ostoria… The Giants return in force. The not only threaten the savage frontier but hold no love for Nertheril either.

The Colossal Kingdom… Giant Kingdom raised from the ice retreating…. better landscape created for a Giant Kingdom. To the south, the Giants face and old rivalry with the Dragons rulers of Murghom.  More details soon to come.

The Shaar… I thought this was much needed. There’s a river with a small bordering Jungle. Very Africa like. Again, where there is land that is plagued there is land that has grown healthy. The double cliffs give it some isolation from the rest of the desolate parts of the Sharr.

Underchasm… much smaller, and not a ridiculous eye sore any longer.

Vilhon Wilds… changed plague lands to north side to allow Hlondeth trade with the border Kingdoms and allow forests plague free for fey kingdom and city states to arise perhaps?

As I've said there’s more to come.

If you feel like you have a good idea that would look good and add some life to the map please share it. I’m not against adding in a good idea!! Ideas do not have to be cannon either. They should just make some kind of sense and have some kind a purpose.

lake of steams that empties into the gulf of luiren would be nice.

Great work, the changes in Vilhon, Mhair, Ostoria and the Shaar (needs more green).

Do you plan to bring back Lantan or Halruaa

oh btw, the eastern shaar desolate was stated in the 4e mainstream line was said to still support life, so in theory you could make it green too and remove the deolate part

Lantan... if i'm not mistaken no one really knows if its still there or hidden by illusion. I've never used it campaign wise myself so I can't really say how important it is or was. I have no issue throwing it in if peeps enjoyed it.

Halruaa... I'm kinda torn. Part of me is happy to see it go and the other part isn't. Was thinking of maybe something half and half but need a story hook.

Actually writing this something came to mind with Halruaa... besides the city of shade.... the was another city of Netheril that was saved by Selune. Wotc writers wrote about it but never did anything with it... Halruaa can still be mostly destroyed but the return of that city with Haruaa survivors? I have to do my research and find info on the city and its name. The Shade certainly would not be happy to find out not only did the city survived but it now rests in the south. What happened to the Aasimar? Did the Deva race replace it?

The Shaar... I know both support life but I envision the Desolate part much more savage and primitive even amongst those considered to be intelligent. Kinda like a Barbarian in the Shaar and a Cannabalist in the Sharr Desolate.

I'm not going to go to crazy naming things on the big map since I plan on making smaller more detailed maps of the major regions.

deva yes repalced aasimar, unless you count humans and what not with the deva heritage feat the aasimar.

opus or some such aka selunnarra iirc.

technically, if and when it returns it will spark a battle with shade and wipe each otehr out.

a story arc to return  halruua, send a wizard back in time to warn their ruler ahead of time, say about a year to evacuate . well if a story quest succedes anyway.
their magics could place their capital city in a exact duplicate demi plane or smack down in the feywild, which would also explain the treant going nutso there currently

I just found this... its also in another book but i can't remember at the moment. This is from the Grand history of the Realms... 339DR Year of Sundered Webs:  The Netherese floating city of Selunarra saved by transporting the city to the Gates of the Moon (just as Shade was transported to Shadow). It doesn't state it in that entry but if I remember correctly the Gates of the Moon was some type of pocket plane in the Tears of Selune, (the Moon). Also the Goddess Selune herself was instrumental in helping Selunarra survive.

Food for thought at the moment: Selunarra returning in the Halruaa area would be interesting. Halruaa it’s self would still be a dream of the past but a new netherese offspring nation could arise in it’s wake. Map wise I would probably change the scope the spellplague areas (diminish it to the center where the civilization was at it’s height). Story wise I think it would make for some good adventuring and even a campaign all onto itself, if trying to build a whole nation instead of just having a floating city above a spellplagued landscape.

Heres the World Map v2:

img33.imageshack.us/i/darkangelsrealmv2....

Changes/Alternations:
Halruaa (Several changes including the addition of Selunarra)
Named Northern Lluirwood forest (Just south of the Great Rift)

I think thats it for the big map for now. Next up is smaller, more detailed regional maps.

If any one knows a good "free" hosting site, I can make a  PDF version of the World Map for download. It would be 10 times clearer.

Enjoy

That is quite a nice looking map, you've done a very good job.

I still wish for a new 4E FR map done in the style of the ECG though, because that map is beyond gorgeous.

Sorry it's taken me so long to finish this but life has a habit of sucking you up. Now that I have had a little free time, i've more or less finished my world map with lot's of changes. I am working on some smaller detailed maps and descriptions for eveything too. however, I did include some minor descriptions from mt 4e campaign.

Map 1: imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/thedark...
Map 2: imageshack.us/photo/my-images/825/thedar...
Sorry if it takes a little time to view but wanted to keep the map detailed Wink

The Dark Angels Realms World Map
Tows/Cities/Regions (Added or altered)

The North

  • Citadel Felbar

  • Ruins of Ascore

  • Myth Glaurach

  • Myth Adofhaer (Spell Plague ends the magical status of the old Siluvanede city, returning her back to Faerun and the Delimbiyr Vale)

  • Fey Wood (Forest that in conjunction with the Deep Maw is heavily laden with Fey of all kinds along with unearthed ruins of lower Nethril).

  • Ostoria

North East

  • The Colossal Kingdom (The Land of Titans)

  • A Thousand Caves (Home of the Spider Goblins)

The Moonsea/Sembia Region

  • Myth Elenath (a city/adventure created by “The_High_Blademage” however I have a different backdrop and obviously a different location to fit in with my 4E campaign)

  • Tesswave

  • Zentil Keep (removed ruins)

  • Ravaeriss (changed from a city circle to a square, since it’s a ruined fort)

  • Sakkors

The Middle Realms

  • The Land Under (Replaces Land’s mouth. Even During a bright lit day the land seems to be cast in shadow. It is a land contested by those above and below, particularly Dwarves who seek passage to their ruined realm of Deep Shanatar).

  • Xain (Altered)

  • Surkh (The Lizard-folk realm)

  • Nathlan (Removed: has been taken out and replaced with the Nentir Vale from D&D4e Dungeon Masters Guide. See “Special”).

  • Hlodeth (Always a fan of this city, not sure why they took it out in the first place)

  • Ormpetarr (moved)

  • Vilhon Wilds (adjusted)

  • Plague Wrought Lands (moved)

  • Nagawater

The South

  • Ss’inthee’ssaree

  • Mhair Archipelago (including Black and Mhair Jungles. Overall I think it adds a lot to the map)

  • Serpentes (How dare the try get rid of Serpentes)

  • The Sharr

  • Underchasm (Significantly changed/Altered)

  • Amatar Forst (altered)

  • The Sharr Desolate (Altered)

  • The Black Hills (Hobogoblin and there triceratop like mounts)

  • East Rift

  • Deep Watch Keep (Dwarven Keep, guarding/overlooking the Underchasim)

  • Underhome (made it a city alive and well)

  • Sadrach’s Splinter (Altered)

  • Rathgaunt’s Mote (Altered)

  • Northern Lluirwood

  • Isle of Luiren (Isle of Halfling Tribes)

  • Selunarria

  • Selunarra (City of Devas. Floating Netherese City saved by Selune. The Spellplaugue forced it back into Toral’s space and time)

  • The Ruins of Halruaa (Altered)

  • Akhkaur Swamp (Altered)

Lots of other Map Changes. You have to look around to find all of them

Special: The Dark Angels Realms v3b (Map 2) is the same with one major different... Nathlan is still removed (I think the territory description is just out right stupid and lacks any type of creativity to put it politely. Really? A “Shou” city in the middle of the Heartland Realms? Is this the best the writers can come up with?!?!) Anyhow… I left it open so you can create your own thing or leave it as the old “The Shinning Plains.” If someone has a creative idea and I like it, perhaps I can put it in at some point. As of now, I kinda like the Nentir Vale.

That's a really excellent map for "just a rough draft"!  You definitely have talent.  I'd take that rough draft over some published maps.

Thank you. I’m going to take my time with it so that when I create other maps they can all follow the same format. Dungeon 187 Chessenta map, is what it will closely resemble once it’s all finished. The later maps will then be easier to create and more importantly finish.

I also want to do the lore for all the maps and territory and make it all come together in a pdf. format, similar to what’s out now or maybe even old school FR. The hardest part is coming up with names of things. It took me forever to figure out a name for that forest until I found something in 2E Giantcraft book I liked.

By chance if anyone is interested, I am open to ideas (the world map too) and I wouldn't mind a little writing, including lore.

Food for thought… since a few of you have posted changes that you would like to see in other threads of late, please post them here... would love some ideas to work off of. Though I said the world map is done, in truth it’s easily editable (for the most part).

Note: the better the desciption you give me the easier things work.
