| #1rpgdaddyOct 08, 2014 11:41:35 | After leaving DND for a long while and now a big fan of the new rules I was wondering if there is going to be support for people who prefer to use the Forgotten Realms campaign setting minus the Spellplague and associated devastation. I suppose we'll have to soldier on and deal with it or convert releases from previous editions but it would be exceptional if WOTC would release new support for previous FR time periods. Maybe a reboot is called for. |
| #2MirtekOct 08, 2014 13:40:22 | They made it clear that there will be no reboot. The timeline will move forward by another 10 years and the effects of the spellplague will be mostly healed, but nothin will be rebooted or made non-canon. Blessedly they will not just invalidate years of novels that fans bought and read because they were canon
And really, this has been discussed over and over of thousands of pages on countless message boards. No need to charge that windmill again |
| #3IrennanOct 08, 2014 13:47:18 | The Sundering reverted many, many things to how they were pre Sp, and ''undid'', so to speak, some of the events that happened during 3e (return of Shade, possibly the removal of the Drow Pantheon, reclamation of Myth Drannor and so on). It also supposedly returned the swapped lands and most, if not all, the lost deities. Many characters are also back.
However, there's no clear or detailed picture of the post-Sundering FR yet, so you'll have to wait for a FRCS before judging if it fits your wishes or not. As for support for previous era, I'm almost sure that it won't happen, as they can barely support the current one (at least this is what I get from the pace of publishing that they have announced, from the staff being reduced to bare minimum to develop a game forward and so on. |
| #4BrianCritchleyOct 08, 2014 16:58:00 | it's a reboot. but uit's a "well everything in 4e happened but everythings back now like it was before cause umm a wizard did it!" |

| #8StiggerOct 09, 2014 13:58:44 | Gotta agree, there isn't going to be a reboot without a change in ownership of the IP, and at the rate things are going, I doubt that's going to happen for a while unless 5e utterly crashes and burns, which doesn't look that likely. |

| #10HobbitFanOct 09, 2014 16:17:01 | I'm getting a similar impression to Irennan i.e. that WOTC doesn't clearly know what they want to do with D&D game and its settings. If they do have a concrete plan, it isn't being communicated to the fans.

| #13BrianCritchleyOct 10, 2014 1:18:57 | I agree that right now the best approuch to take is "wait and see" ultimatly I think 5th edition is gonna be what makes or breaks D&D, if WOTC screws this edition up? they're proably done |

| #15BrianCritchleyOct 10, 2014 16:17:48 | ohh agreed, I never said WOTC would be done, but rather D&D would basicly be done.
that said that article explains a lot, the inability to list lisencing fees for their IPs is IMHO proably the biggest case of stupid out there. |
| #16arnwolf666Oct 11, 2014 8:56:00 | I want to see Ed Greenwood's Forgotten Realms. |

| #19BrianCritchleyOct 12, 2014 0:46:21 | eh WOTC doesn't need to do anything major a single FRCS release and I'll be happy. in fact I'd perfer it if WOTC didn't muck around with RSEs |
| #20rpgdaddyOct 13, 2014 10:02:28 | It seems like WOTC is sitting on so much Forgotten Realms intellectual property they could publish an FR redux anthology without much more effort than making new layouts of previously published material. I'm sure a huge amount of players old and new would love it. I don't think there was a Spellplague in Ed's personal version of his setting so maybe they should look to him for guidance on new releases.
I realize there has been a lot of novels and other related lore pertaining to 4E cataclsymic changes but since 4E DND was killed because of poor player support why not kill all the related effects in FR too? Now is the time to set everything right. |

| #31BrianCritchleyOct 22, 2014 2:19:41 | we can argue the specifics all we want but 4th edition realms definatly changed the look and feel of the realms. the fate of the realms is really one of the biggest missteps of 4th edition. had the realms not changed much WOTC MAY have been able to draw people into 4th edition. but by destroying both the system AND the setting in one fell swoop they garnteed a loss of fanbase. I quite hoenstly still to this day cannot for the life of me figure out what they where thinking. If I was placed in charge of WOTC my fiurst order of busniess would be to find out whose idea the 4th editions take on the realms was and ensure they where no longer employed by the company. the changes to FR for 4th edition where, IMHO an unforgivable risk (which didn't pay off) with a major intellectual property |
| #32StiggerOct 22, 2014 4:50:57 | I kinda suspect that loss of fanbase was actually a part of the plan with 4e, in the hopes of appealing to a larger market at the expense of the existing one. I can absolutely not prove that to any degree, but it's been a thought I've been tossing back and forth in my head for years now. Of course I also have a lot of other thoughts about the 4e team, but it's probably better to keep those other thoughts to myself. |

| #41ZardnaarOct 27, 2014 14:53:28 | Whatever they focus on seems to come and go. When I started with FR Waterdeep and the Dalelands seemed to be the places they focused on. THe Dalelands seemed to go on the back burner to some extent in 3rd ed and the North seems to be the focus area now (Drizzt effect?).

| #42BRJNNov 01, 2014 19:20:35 | Do another Primal Power book (and/or raid the ancient 'What is your Barbarian's culture?' thread - I kept notes ! ) and use Rashemen as a prototype for a Primal land. Book of Vile Deeds has a Thay module written all over it. Unearthed Arcanum is what the magicians in Restored Netheril use to teach their college-level students. Merchant Prince could discuss Amn and its merchantile empire. Psionics Handbook can discuss the ancient Jhammdathi empire (also known as the Vilhon Reach, I think) and re-introduce the demigod Auppenser. Gods of the Realms might be too big to contain in just one book, but set some fluff text in EverLight and other stuff in a cultic shrine to The Unspeakable One.
