I am looking to get some Forgotten Realms books for Christmas and was wanting to know what books are important for running a Forgotten realms campaign.

This is for 3.5/3 ed.

Are you talking Game books or novels? If youre talking Novels I cant be much help there, I havnt read any of the 3e era novels, so i wouldnt know, but if youre talking game books i can help you out there. The main one to get would be the 3e Campaighn Setting, and the Player's Guide to Faerun, which is the 3.5 update, but still has good information in it. Magic of Faerun is another good one to have. Monsters of Faerun is yet another good one to have, after you youll need monters. Faiths and Pantheons has good info on the gods. After that I would go with some reginal books, like the City of Spelders, The Shining South, Unapproachable East, Silver Marches, etc, depending on what region you wanted to focus you game on. Theyre all good, and all of them have good info and maps in them.

I'd have to second Silversword's nominations for Game supplements. I also found good info in Waterdeep: City of Splendors but many people don't like that book. I also found Champions of Valor and Champions of Ruin good books too, lots of crunchy stuff in there.

As for novels for the 3e era, there are soooo many that it's hard to put into a collective list right off the top of my head. But here are a few that I've found to be great reads:

The Dark Elf trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojurn)

The Icewind Dale trilogy (The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, The Halfling's Gem)

Starlight and Shadows trilogy (Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs, Windwalker)

Evermeet: The Island of Elves

The Last Mythal trilogy (Forsaken House, Farthest Reach, Final Gate)

The City of Splendor

The Pools trilogy (Pool of Radiance, Pool of Darkness, Pool of Twilight; Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor)

Return of the Archwizards trilogy (The Summoning, The Siege, The Sorceer; Realms of Shadow Anthology)

The Finder's Stone trilogy (Azure Bonds, The Wyverns Spur, Song of the Saurials)

The Avatar trilogy (Shadowdale, Tantras, Waterdeep)

The Fighters: Bladesinger (*many don't like this one, but it's a favorite of mine)

The Scions of Arribar trilogy (The Sapphire Crecent, The Ruby Guardian, The Emerald Scepter) *this is another I don't see people mention alot, but I like it due to it being one of the very few novels that deal with this region.

3.5...

Lets see. The FRCS, Faiths and Pantheons, Magic of Faerun, Lords of Darkness, Races of Faerun, Underdark, The Players Guide to Faerun, Champions of Valor and Ruin, Power of Faerun, Dragons of Faerun, and last but certainly not least Lost Empires of Faerun.

In a place all its own would be Gran History of the Realms.

Evermeet: Island of Elves

You may or may not find it helpful to read at least part of the Songs and Swords series first, since knowing who the hell Danilo Thann and Arilyn Moonblade even *are* is somewhat helpful to understanding the framing story of the book and why it's being written, by whom, and for whom.

You can certainly read it without, I did, it was actually the first FR thing I ever read period, but.

(You should read the S&S series anyway because Elaine Cunningham's books are awesome, but.)

-I will have to agree with that. The FRCS is generally lauded as one of WotC's best sourcebooks. And, it was written almost ten years ago, so that shows the general acclaim that it recieved, and how good it actually is. If you take a look at my reviews thread, you can read a bunch reviewing various 3e/4e sourcebooks, with my opinions of each.

The FRCS is the way to go.

If you expect to get more than one book, I'd ask for some Forgotten Realms adventures to go along with the FRCS.  If you can get a copy of The Twilight Tomb or Sons of Gruumsh you'd be all set.  Just start your players at level 3 or 4 and have at it.

I'm not sure how much you are into Realms fiction, but if you're interested I would recommend a paperback copy of Swords of Eveningstar by Ed Greenwood as a good place to start reading the Realms.

Merry Christmas!
