Forgotten Realms Dwarves

I was curious as to the statis of dwarves. To me it seems they are one of the truely underplayed and underwritten races of the realm. They never appear all by their lonesome as just about every other race and never seem to have the spotlight. I mean this as with WotSQ and The Last Mythal and even with Drizzt's books which contain a large portion of current dwarven know-how and only has a dwarf as a supporting character... I mean with all the elven books and resources you'd think they could spend on three book series on fleshing out the dwarves whom have the second longest history on faerun of the bipedal cultures! ..phew. I digress. Anywho..

I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of a book that would be fun to peruse for such topics?

Right on. I spent 40$ on an old copy (decent condition) that is about as thick as a tabloid magazine. I still think the majority of what's mention can apply to 3e or 4e--minus what was lost in the SpellPlague. I find it a must for any dwarf fan.

I hear that dwarves got the spotlight at least some of the time in the Dragonlance novels. It'd be nice if that happened in the Realms (well...it would have been nice I should say, since forthcoming novels all seem to be for the 4E Realms, which I don't like).

Eh, Thorobardin (?) doesn't quite equate.

Besides, the difference between DL and FR is that DL's time has come and gone for the most part. Once the setting went to 5th Age and got screwed, they had to reach back into the "days of ol'" to bring back the nostalgia of the original series.

DL writes about every race--minotaurs included--simply to see what the fanfare is.

Lack of individuality is what makes dwarves unique! Every other race is all about "oooh, look at me, I'm so different from others of my kind" while those dwarves dare to truly tread their own path. :fight!:

Well @ least the FR dwarves were intentionally created instead of being an accident like the DL dwarves. FR Dwarves 1 DL Dwarves 0

You still have RAS writing in 3.5e. And he's still has a couple of dwarves still alive plus @ least 2 settlements we know of.

True. RAS hasn't really used a dwarf as a main character "in the spotlight" (which is what the OP was talking about), but he does actually use dwarves a lot in his work.

So there is no novel or trilogies in FR that focuses on the dwarven culture? Wow that is mind boggling( easy to do with someone like me but still). What about campaigns or lore books? Sounds like an injustice is happening here.
Well here's to the hope that RAS or another author deciding to write about any of the dwarves settlements or civilizations(Gauntylgrym, Citedal adbar, Citadel Felbarr, plus the hundreds I haven't read about yet)

Yeah, my man, this is a Q that has come up 3 times or so within the last few weeks.

There are no extensive novels.

The only sourcebook completely devoted to Dwarves is Dwarves Deep--an EG creation. A complete pain for me to find and buy.

But certainly worth it.

-I know you've said you already got it, but for any future things, .PDF files are probably a lot easier. Much cheaper, and much easier to find. The only drawback is that you don't have the physical book, which some people do say they prefer.

Well to me that seems a lack of foresight on Wotc's part in my opinion. You'd figure since they are a major race on FR that the designers/authors would put forth a little more effort intoo making them more prominant than being "cameos" and "sidekicks" in the novels. i mean even DL has novel series featuring Kender as main characters. Well time to update the tally Dl 3 FR 1.(only because DL has novels with both Kender and Dwarves as main charcters plus the Lore books and FR has no novels featuring Dwarves or Halflings). Though FR is surely the better setting.

Dwarves make me nervous.

They make very scary villains that just... wont... go... down!

I like their craftwork and art of wartactics though.

Scary interlopers!
*Runs* by Suin Bahhar

The arrows hit a invisibile wall and fall to the ground, 15 dwarfs teleport infront of the archer weapions and wands, staffs ready.

I love the dwarfs, in my Fr game the dwarf have reestablished the Delzone ties, there is The Counsel of Stones from every hall. Every hall has thier leaders and the Counsel of Stones have dwarven wizards as counslers to each leader.

My man, DD was created and printed right off the type of printer I have in my office. Scanning and stapling the thing would take me about 20 minutes for one copy--an hour for a few more.

If I didn't have copyright restrictions, I would go to the CENSORED market.

Though, I might do it for a few special people that give me a mailing address and some favors at some point.

I have a chipmunk that needs a killing, you see....

There is one all-dwarf tale that I know of, but it's only a short story: "Standard Delving Procedure" by Lisa Smedman, in Realms Of The Dragons.

I guessing the reason that dwarves don't get much attention is because they aren't widely popular. There are a few dedicated fans, but most people are more interested in human or elven cultures.

Really? How can people simply not find a Dwarven Doo-dad with a green beard and a Sha-La-La or a dual mornigstar wielding rhyming dwarf or THE ultimate battlerager who greases his spiked armor with the blood of his enemies interesting? Still sounds suspect tome

I love Pikel! But what I mean is that, when dwarves aren't given that special touch, a lot of people kind of write them off as "that race of short blacksmiths" or something to that effect. I like certain dwarven characters, but ultimately, the thing that turns me off about them is that they mostly live underground. *shudder* It would really bother me to not see the sun on a regular basis. Besides, I'm a total druid nut, and other than Pikel, how many dwarven druids do you see?

I get your point. But I was saying that Wotc didn't even attempt to make dwarves more known other than a lore book that was previously mentioned is suspect. Surely Wotc could come up with some plotlines concerning dwarves for example:
An immortal dwarven magician who is a chosen of the goddess of magic......no thats been done already but how about this :
A dual scimitar wielding Dwarven ranger with dark skin and battles evil with a great panther.....Dang that's taken to. Oh here we go: A dwarven dandy who plays the fool but is really an accomplished mage who pursue's a half-elven woman(out of love) and has a powerful archmage for an uncle......Drats thats a no go 2. But wait i got it: A dwarven fighter who is beset with a curse in which he can only perform a feat in exchange for a reward otherwise a leopard rips from his chest and cant become a dwarf again until it kills something but in the end becomes a god.....Oh shoot that one's taken as well.

Well this is harder than I thought

Feel free to pitch in

Drizztsmanchild according to Spelljammer the Bloodstone clan, if you look them up they are half dwarf/drow: they have been to Realms Space. Yes the Bloodstone Dwarfs have dark skin like the drow and redish hair. The Bloodstone dwarfs are built like dwarfs somewhat but have drowish faces and the women don't have facial hair.

So to answer your question there are dwarven rangers with dark skin and have animal companions, even magical animals companions. They could be in on Faerun at any time.

another good book on the dwarfs besides dwarves deep is races of stone, the book has dwarven prestige classes and describes the dwarfs race and more.

I'm can't remember where I read it , the bloodstone clan has a place on Fearun somewhere. They mine and sell the items off world.

Beisdes the bloodstone clan that have spell jammer ships on Faerun are the elves of evermeet, the wa empire, the Shau empire, waterdeep, one or two more. In realms space there are a lot of races on differnt planets in the system and asteroids belts that have spelljammer ships. If I remember right the elves have the biggest fleet.

Dwarves can be more than grim, stubborn, underground-delving warriors. Just from their deity list:

Dugmaren Brightmantle (Deity of Curiosity, discovery, invention, scholarship, and knowledge.)
Dogma: The Secrets of the world are waiting to be revealed. Travel widely, broaden your mind at every opportunity, and pursue the life of a scholar. Cultivate the spirit of inquiry among the young and be a teacher to all. Seek to recover the lost and/or arcane knowledge of ages past and apply it in the wolrd of today. Try new methods of doing things just for the joy of experimenting. Learn a little of everything, for you never know what might be of use down the road.

Marthammor Duin (Deity of dwarven adventurers, explorers, expatriates, travelers, and wanderers. Also the dwarven deity of lightning.)
Dogma: If the Children of Moradin are to survive as a race, they must adapt, grow, and learn to dwell in harmony with other good races, particularly humans. The Stout Folk must be encouraged to emerge from the illusory safety of their hidden delves and find true security in fellowship with humankind and demihumankind. Help fellow wanderers and sojourners in the world, giving all that is needful. Guide those who are lost and guard those who are defenseless. Seek out new ways and new paths, and discover the wide wold in your wanderings. Herald the way of newfound hope.

Haela Brightaxe(dead in 4E, but not in my Realms) was a patron deity of adventuring Dwarven warriors.

Thard Harr, the deity of Wild Dwarves, pretty much forgotten by other Dwarven races, was known to the dwarves of Deep Shanatar, and it is possible that his worship was rediscovered by the remnants of the Armies of Gold and Steel when they claimed its ruins in 1383 DR. If so, Thard Harr may have reverted to the less savage outlook and form he likely had in the days of that lost kingdom, and therefore the dwarves of Faerun might now have rediscovered some druidic traditions(and now have one more reason to venture to the surface).

Followers of these deities(they don't have to be part of their clergy) could differ from the dwarven norm, making for some interesting PCs or NPCs.

Even if it was just a story of steriotypical dwarves where's the harm? I mean if people really broke it down they are fun characters to read around. They are loyal to a fault, stubborn, full of stupid and uselessly followed traditions and ideals (kinda like the elves...) and a backround full of deep magic, along with some of the most powerful artifacs to ever surface in the realms. You'd think any story involving a powerful piece of armor or sword or axe or whatever would be centered around the dwarves.

My dear lady, you speak of minorities--insignificance in the reality of FR. I don't doubt your knowledge of SpellJammer or their mention of such things, but I believe that much of what you speak of is lost upon this audience.

Connect the BloodStone clan to something we all can connect to, or I feel the majority of us will be lost.

My years of FR very rarely connect to what SpellJammer puts forth as "canon."
