I'm sorry, but where do I read about this overhaul? Do I need to have DDI to read about it?

I've been out of FR, and roleplaying games for that matter. For quite a while.

So, can you give me the info? And how I read up on what's to come.

besides the moaning and griping on these boards, you should check out the 3 Countdown to the Realms articles in the online Dragon magazine, ehich you currently do not need to subscribe to to read

Then get the Campaign Book in August if you want to waste $35

Amazon really does have great book deals. $60 for the 4th Ed Gift Set? Yes please!

Good thing is I preordered it for $57. Bad thing is they are so backlogged I still haven't gotten my set yet

I WOULD'VE gotten the core rulebook gift set for $54, including one-day shipping, if it weren't for that. Man, I really wish I hadn't cancelled my Buy.com order. It would've been $70+, but at least I would've gotten the books on June 6th. And that would've still been $30 cheaper then what I ended up spending at a FLGS that day.

As for my Amazon order, I told them to cancel that and send me a PHB, instead, but apply all the discounts that they put on the core rulebook gift set to that. So I got myself a second PHB with one-day shipping for $17.

-The online DRAGON magazine has a few "Countdown to the Realms" articles that explain (in little detail) a lot of what's going on. Furthermore, Rich Baker, in his "Ask-the-Author" thread, and in his novel Swordmage has illuminated further bits and pieces of the 4-Gotten Realms. Other novels, such as Stardeep, for example, have hinted at things to come.

-All have been compiled in the 4e FAQ thread.

BTW, you should change your perspective, especialy if you liked the realms as they where. In that case it would not be an overhaul, but a dumbing-down.

Must it always descend into this bickering...

Yes, but it's alright... I won't join the mob and start foaming at the mouth until I find out Hoar's fate. Granted, if they do anything with him that isn't a Axe/Shar's boy-toy, I'll be pleasantly surprised... As it stands, I'm preparing myself for the worst. Here's hoping if he gets the axe, I like his replacement.

Thanks for replies. I've read the articles of "Countdown to the Realms". Interesting to read, and a large change indeed. I didn't mean to open a heated discussion, and if anyone feels that the thread should be closed, go ahead.

I'm curious about the change for FR, but unsure. I like the way they want to keep many parts of the realms down to earth, with 'islands' of great magic and fantasy.

I'm not much for the Dragonborn, but I guess they're not that bad.

You know, I've never actually even seen Dragonball...

And this is hardly a heated discussion... yet. Barely even warm for some of the threads we've had of late, but it probably would be a good idea to lock it.

I have to say that, regardless that the new Realms are mostly horrible compared to what they used to be, it is FAR better than the new core "world" (whatever that means!).

markustay63

Jun 23, 2008 8:43:49
The Core World doesn't really exist, so that means Core = Nothing.

So are you saying 4e FR is better then nothing? Personally, I'd have to disagree...

....more like invest $35 if you ask me.

LOL

I already gave my 4e PHB away.

Not saying it was bad; it just wasn't for me.

I was going to buy the FRCG for Ed's contribution, but now that they cut the Anchorome stuff, I feel its a useless purchase... for me, at any rate.

I will take a look at it (in Borders) when it comes out, but I'm fairly certain I will be using the Golarion setting from this point forth. WotC wants us to put the past behind us and move forward, and thats what I intend to do.

According to Brian James, it wasn't cut. It was never written, and Ed instead wrote up the information on the new continent which replaced Maztica.

Jun 23, 2008 9:41:37
Well, we'll see how much of Ed's material made it into the FRCG... I suppose there is still some hope it may be 'adequate'. The last Podcast described Ed's 70 pg. Waterdeep contribution being boiled down to just 3 pages - a mere 4% of what he provided. Extrapolating that percentage forward, that means only about 2000 words of the 50,000 will actually make it in.

It will be fun to see how close to the mark I am. :P

Argh. You got yours, read it, decided it was junk and gave it away. Mine hasn't shipped from Amazon yet

I didn't go through it cover-to-cover, I just checked out the parts that interested me like the classes and races, and some of the mechanics.

The first thing that 'did it' for me was when I went looking for the Spell Lists - thats always the first thing I like to read in every edition of D&D.

There was none.

Anyhow, I gave it to my son, so it's not like it went very far, and I do plan on making a character for his game eventually. To be honest, I was planning my own playtest, but the GSL knocked the wind right out of my sails, so the decision to not use it wasn't based on the rules themselves (which I still feel are pretty solid).

I like diversity in my games, and the idea of buying edition-specific material from a single company just rubs me the wrong way - I suppose I was spoiled by 3e in the regard.

I would've gotten my order June 6th if it wasn't for that whole credit card issue. I made the order, then a week or two later found a fraudulent charge on my card and cancelled it. Sadly, I forgot about the Amazon order I made with that card. Then thursday, June 5th I get an e-mail saying that they were prepping my order to ship and tried to charge my card but it didn't work. Less then 20 minutes after receiving that e-mail I corrected my credit card information, but it was to late. My $54 order turned into a $75 order and my June 6th delivery date became a July 28th delivery date. What a cluster**** of a mess.

Already mentioned it in another thread, but I went and bought the books from my FLGS for full price the day they came out rather then get stuck waiting two months for them (I needed them the next day for Worldwide D&D Gameday). As for my Amazon order, I had them substitute the core rulebook gift set (which they had none of) with the PHB (which they had plenty of) and apply all the same discounts to that order. So two or three days after making that change I got a spare PHB for $17 (which is just as well, as the PHB I got from the FLGS was damaged).

Do you care about the slipcase? Because what you can do is ask them to substitute the core rulebook gift set for the separate PHB, DMG, and MM and tell them you want the same price for that. Several people have done that, already.

I think if you are a fan of the Realms, then get it. They stated that the 4e version will be based around 100 years after how 3e ended. So it is not just a revision, but an entirely new era.

Besides, I am planning to get the Player's Guide. I just want to focus on the player half of the system right now.

Even if they enjoy the rules of 4E but hate the updated setting there's still alot of good bits coming out in the 4gotten Realms Campaign Guide like the Swordmage class, Half-Orcs, Genasi, paragon paths, and maybe even additional spells/powers/exploits too.

Me neither, it's history was more important for me than being a dungeon, which are too much easier to create. And I was happy that elves won once after so many defeats (Evereska nearly destroyed, Evermeet attacked, Zhaor assasinated, etc.). I'm not one of those who want elves as misterious beings like LotR. They are just another race with a different way of thinking and history, and it's that history and way of thinking what makes them attractive, not how rare they are to see.

I did get a chance to play in Myth Drannor as a dungeon (by the campaign box set). Very memorable place. But I do much prefer it as a living city. I never understood why dwarven and elven kingdoms just always have to be in decline in fantasy; it is much more exciting to fight side by side with legendary warriors and forces, and you can keep ruins on the side for those types of adventures.

It wasn't anything I was ever particularly fond of, myself. It irritated the snot out of me everytime I came across the whole "elves retreating, dwarves diminishing" thing. That's why I was so happy about some of the details with the 3E Realms. The Thundering? Sweet! Elves coming back to the mainland? Even better (also why I liked the Chainmail setting. The elves had a powerful empire in that).

As for Myth Drannor, I'm all for it getting rebuilt. Just wish it was being ruled by the family line of my 2E character who tried so hard to conquer the place and make it his own personal demesne. Oh well. Can't win 'em all. ;)

And yes I think I would have loved the return of Myth Drannor so much more if the trilogy had remembered to occasionally do some character development instead of flooding us with lore. Not that I minded the lore.

As for Myth Drannor, I'm all for it getting rebuilt. Just wish it was being ruled by the family line of my 2E character who tried so hard to conquer the place and make it his own personal demesne. Oh well. Can't win 'em all. ;)

Just make it that way in your own Realms.

-Too bad it wasn't always consistent with the rest of the setting. Meh...

-Eh...Personally speaking, I'm not really looking for much character development and such in Forgotten Realms novels as much as I am looking for information about the setting, and about the issue at hand, whatever it is in the particular novel.

Yeah, unless its Bob Salvatore, since he is actually a professional author and does a good job at characterization, or Elaine, since her characters are actually interesting.

-The latter, personally speaking, is one of the worst at doing this.

Well, maybe not deep, but at least entertaining.
