This is fine, a lot of people dig this style of play...there's absolutly nothing wrong with it.
To him, we on these forums aren't creative even if we make our own little original stories, because we use the same reoccuring villians over and over again for the past 5 editions like Cult of the Dragon, Zhentarim, Red Wizards, etc and the same NPCs like the Harpers, Lords Alliance, Drizzt, etc.
Now even though I tell him that the storyline and timeline advanced and that the Cult of the Dragon is under new leadership or that the Spellplague changed the Realms and reduced everyone's numbrs, including the gods, or that this and that is different, and Fzoul Chembryl is a primordial now, or that the Neverwinter has a Chasm, he just doesn't think its cool to play in a rewritten campaign setting. He thinks it's unorignal, and he's just tired of hearing about the Harpers and the Cult of the Dragon. To him, we've beat a dead horse.
Now I know some of you are very creative, and may insert your own little factions and groups into theRealms and may not even touch Elminster or Szass Tam, but for the most part, you gotta admit, we play the Fogotten Realms because we like specific NPCs and villians and locations and lore.
Cuz im worried folks...I'm thinking that were the minority here. And that gamers like my brother much rather have a generic setting or create their own world (which is maybe why WoTC hasn't or isn't going to write a 5e FRCS). could it be true? That FR just sucks? Why bother catering to the minority of FR fans on a dead message board when there's the general population at large that they're barely trying to hook with d&d in the first place? And to appease us "little people" they throw us a bone and put thier new 5e adventures set in the Realms, to shut us up. At least they can say they updated the Realms for 5e?!
So let's be frank here. What is the benefit of a FRCS or even having a Forgotten Realms to play with in the first place when any schmuck can open the DMG and make their own little niche setting. mPersonally, I love the Realms and would not run any other game. But for my brothers sake, and possibly WoTC, let's tell them what they're missing...!

And to your point, there's more than enough room in the Realms I insert your own personal villians, NPCs and the like. I do that myself. But you got to admit, that if your playing in Waterdeep why would you miss out on the chance to have Laeral as one of your NPCs? Or Eldaith Craulnobler? For someone who plays in Cormyr, such as yourself, don't tell me you've never had the Purple Dragon Knights, or King Azoun in your game? Or Vanderghaust (sp?)?
Now im sure there are people out there who like the idea of Cormyr as a kingdom and never incorporate the idea that Sembia is nearby and a possible threat. Or that the Zhentarim is lurking in thier streets, spying on them. This is ok, and super cool as is ALL role playing....I get it...it should be whatever you want it to be.
I just think that if your gonna play in the FR and you never play with any of the iconic NPCs or lore, then what's the point of playing FR. It's like buying a bunch of Cobra Commander toys or buying Sgt. Slaughter and never playing GI Joe. I just don't understand. To me, the benefits fb playing FR is to use that lore. It is to use those villians and NPCs. We read the books, play the video games, and you know we love the stories, and just want to share those ideas via a campaign arch (of your own making, yes) with d&d players, many of whom have never played in the Realms.
Wll, at least that's the way I look at it. My group is comprised of former homebrew, Greyhawk and Shadow Run gamers, who've never experienced the Realms. As DM, I cannot simply sit back and say, ok we're playing the FR but never introduce the Harpers! This is insane! At least some inspiration must come out of a FRCS for something, right? What's the point of even having as FRCS if no one is gonna touch those ideas?
I don't know man. I'm torn now. I almost think that WotC isn't making a FRCS because there's just not enough fan base. Everyone's off making thier own little homebrew world and forgetting about the Realms.
