| #1KnoJun 18, 2009 14:14:41 | I was reading in the Future Releases section about how particular settings are good because they don't have traditional (sometimes tolkienesque) races but interesting ones like irda, sea elves, muls, kender, thri-kreen, warforged, cannibal halflings and others. That is kinda silly. FR is now, in 4e, considered as the world with the genasi and drow. What other monsters from older editions can be made into PC races, I want to give more variety if possible. There are genasi drow fey'ri avariel lythari svirfneblin extaminaar worghest azerblood shalarin saurial volodni sind alaghi Loxo and wemics, my players don't like them, anything else, excluding subraces? |
| #2lord_karsusJun 18, 2009 21:59:59 | -Anything can be made into potential races. As for something Forgotten Realms specific, and kind of obscure...maybe the Blue Ring Octopi? |
| #3drizztsmanchildJun 19, 2009 1:32:24 | Well if Drizzt and Cattie-Brie have offspring I think that would create a new race Drumanemo: 1/2 drow + 1/2 human + all emo. :P |

What are they like and what's the source? Well if Drizzt and Cattie-Brie have offspring I think that would create a new race Interesting. Would be annoying to other players. :evillaugh |
| #5old_sageJun 19, 2009 8:49:56 | What are they like and what's the source? See DRAGON #227. |
| #6KnoJun 19, 2009 10:57:33 | Will check, octopoid PC seems too weird tough. Any other race suggestions? |
| #7lord_karsusJun 19, 2009 11:36:00 | What are they like and what's the source? -Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark. |
| #8arcas_shanJun 19, 2009 13:14:31 | Avariel and Lythari (no monsters but still great possible PR's). Real sick player races would be draegloths and driders.![]() |
| #9quale1Jun 19, 2009 15:43:25 | Agreed, I wish avariels and lythari were more promoted than so many elven subraces.I was reading in the Future Releases section about how particular settings are good because they don't have traditional (sometimes tolkienesque) races but interesting ones like irda, sea elves, muls, kender, thri-kreen, warforged, cannibal halflings and others. That is kinda silly. FR is now, in 4e, considered as the world with the genasi and drow. Well, tolkienesque is a very broad generalization, it's true only concerning stuff like the Elven Retreat to Evermeet. During 2e FR had to have everything good and bad published and to be with the ''core'' D&D theme. That's why it's declared traditional, mostly by people who didn't read all that overwhelming lore and demanded changes. Sea elves aren't unique, actually most sea-elven d&d realms are in FR. Only there are no two subraces of aquatic elves. Muls and warforged, honestly don't see what's so great about them. Kender, there are individual halflings who are fearless and klepto, not an entire race. Thri-kreen, there are many of them in the South, unfortunately no detailed cultures exist like on Athas. Cannibal halflings, what about ghostwise followers of Malar or People of the Black Blood. Beside fey'ri, the planetouched are tannaruk (Monsters of Faerun, etc.), celadrin, d'hin, worghest, azerblood (all Dragon 350, not much lore about them tough). Also yuan-ti extaminaar (Champions of Ruin), krinth (shadow goblin-things, my players don't like them) aquatic - shalarin or morkoth (Sea of Fallen Stars, very cool) saurials (4 types) or lacerials (Malatra, Living Jungle) we had a PC who was frost (snow fey converted from 2e FR Monstrous Compendium) in 3e Underdark races like glouras (unseelie fey) and gloamings volodni (plant race, Unapproachable East) and spiritfolk (think needs a better name), tasloi (3e Shining South) or you can play a Jordain-born (human magical bloodline) or be an Alias vessel (unique construct) and there are sind (psionic cynics, live in marshes, related to githzerai) and zu-teren here |
| #10KnoJun 20, 2009 16:39:26 | Thank you all for the suggestions, several of them are excellent. The list is updated, can't still decide between 2nd or 4th edition. Others like spiritfolk or planetouched need better fluff, only good initial ideas. Don't ask me how I looked for some sources . |
| #11KnoJun 21, 2009 2:21:14 | What about the volodni, were they named by Volo? I think they'd be better with some psychotropic powers in the 4th ed. |
| #12sfdragonJun 21, 2009 2:27:32 | yuan ti pureblood dont like snake fang cultist |
| #13KnoJun 21, 2009 2:35:17 | I don't want to overlap with the extaminaar, a paragon path where it goes through ritual genetic purification? |
| #14markustay63Jun 21, 2009 9:34:44 | You can play an Alaghi - FR-specific, intelligent, and kinda cool (and humanoid-enough for the DM not to have a ton of headaches to contend with, as with centaurs, flyers, or sea-races). You get to be Sasquatch! :D Well if Drizzt and Cattie-Brie have offspring I think that would create a new race And lets not forget 'raised by Dwarves', so you have a lot of personality quirks and some archaic speech patterns. Without that, all you have there is a northern Crinti. :P Thri-Kreen are also available for play in FR, but I was never big on bugs - as a monster they're okay, but I just don't see how a player could ever pull-off the roleplaying to my stisfaction (the whole alien, hive-mentality thing). |
| #15KnoJun 21, 2009 11:17:06 | You can play an Alaghi - FR-specific, intelligent, and kinda cool (and humanoid-enough for the DM not to have a ton of headaches to contend with, as with centaurs, flyers, or sea-races). You get to be Sasquatch! :D or ChewieAren't they from Greyhawk? I want exotic races, tough they should be able to walk peacefully most of the time, not in danger of becoming furcoats or an octopus salad. |
| #16markustay63Jun 21, 2009 13:11:11 | Nope - Alaghi are FR-specific, and I believe they were invented by Ed IIRC. |
| #17lord_karsusJun 21, 2009 20:31:30 | -3e stats are in Monsters of Faerûn. |
| #18markustay63Jun 21, 2009 20:46:05 | Well... yeah... but I was making a point of where they were from, and I figured a 2e source was more appropriate. I'm sure there's even a 1e source, but I didn't bother to check. Besides, they look way kewler there then they did in 3e. :P |
| #19lord_karsusJun 21, 2009 21:07:35 | -You think? I like the one you posted better. That one looks more "2000s Yeti", whereas the one in MoF looked more "1950s Bigfoot". |
| #20KnoJun 22, 2009 3:44:29 | They seem acceptable, kinda. |
| #21markustay63Jun 22, 2009 10:28:28 | The 2e version I use as a corrupted 'Dire Alaghi'. You know how there is a half-fiend version of EVERYTHING in FR. :D |
| #22drizztsmanchildJun 23, 2009 2:26:29 | Well if you want to get "technical" about it any combining of two different species that produces off-spring is the creation of a new species and said offspring would be a member. Now since it seems that some creators/designers/authors who incorporate said species in their lore/settings/novels are to lazy/uncreative/imaginationless(not a word:P) to come up with a name for said species by all means come up with something that works for you.![]() Preferably something more original than "half-something" ![]() ![]() |
| #23sfdragonJun 23, 2009 4:53:03 | I'd play as a Barachi btw are there stats for them anywhere or should I go ask ED? |
| #24old_sageJun 23, 2009 8:37:12 | I don't think that's something Ed could answer. |
| #25quale1Jun 23, 2009 9:15:37 | batrachi are/were a bunch of amphibian and changeling races, there are stats for their descendants tough, sivs, doppelgangers, grippli, tako ... |
| #26markustay63Jun 23, 2009 11:45:56 | Preferably something more original than "half-something" Such lines of reasoning prompted me to create "The Forgotten race of Lings" years ago. ;) Small (about 2') with furry legs - basically a type of Faun (or Urchin). |
