FR Novels, Electronic format?

Feb 18, 2009 14:57:49 Is there a place to get a decent number of the FR novels in electronic format (legally)? Im equally curious about Eberron novels, but I figure the answer will likely be the same.

Feb 18, 2009 19:56:13 -Nothing that I know of, legally. There probably isn't. I've never heard of WotC doing anything with enovels. Star Wars, I know, has a few.

In this I mean to suggest a way of curbing the "Out Of Print" problem. Much as I prefer a print product as the basis of my reading pleasure they fade and are damaged and just plain fall out of use.

Although the only thing I think that would work in encouraging this chance is a fairly strong appeal to WotC's bank balance. Point out to them that a digitisation of these works, watermarking and incorporation into an e-book catalogue (their own or someone elses) may well result in a larger number of sales, especially sales of older works that are now almost impossible to get hold of because those titles would appear almost as "new" titles to newcomers to the novels market, there would be a decreased distribution cost associated with each unit of product and it would allow the impulse buying tendencies of the internet to be harnassed.

Hmm. Just ideas.

Feb 19, 2009 9:30:05 -WotC has switched to the online only format for the magazines and such, anyway, so it would be a natural progression.

Feb 19, 2009 10:14:25 True, but that is for the release of new material. What I am hoping for is a digitisation and therefore re-release of the old material too. I wonder if the printing arm of the publishing section still holds the proofs for them. It would make things much easier.

Feb 20, 2009 20:20:36 As the novels of 2e and 3e were such a detriment to the setting that they felt they had to create a 4e, I don't see them going this route for some time. No need to stain their crisp, clean sheets at this point.

-While I am pretty sure you were being tongue-in-cheek there, ultimately, they do whatever it is that makes them money. Even if it was a proven fact that novels "ruined" the setting- and I, personally, think it's the opposite, but that's not the point- if there's money to be made by "rereleasing" them in that format, and subsequently "ruining" things again, I'd see the decision being made in a heartbeat. After all, if things can be "fixed" now, they can also be "fixed" later.
