Jun 23, 2008 1:47:49 Im creating a bhaalspawn that may later on in the campaign pick up the Half-fiend template (through a casting of Nar Fiendbond). If I give the bhaalspawn damage reduction 5/silver, how would that effect the damage reduction 5/magic or 10/magic from the half-fiend template? How would that look in an npc stats block? Would one negate the benefits of the other? Would they stack?

As an afterthought I should note that this is for 3.5.

Jun 23, 2008 1:57:47 It depends on whether you treat the new DR is an "and" or an "or".

I would rule that the bhaalspawn has DR 5/silver and magic.

Therefore the bhaalspawn must be struck by silvered weapons with at least a +1 enhancement bonus in order to overcome its damage reduction.

I suppose you could list it as DR 5/silver or magic, in which case either a silvered weapon or magic weapon of at least +1 enhancement could hurt it, but that really depends on how much of a challenge you are looking to make this NPC.

Jun 23, 2008 7:20:29 I remember that DR of different kinds do not stack, but they apply at the appropriate time. For example, you say both DR 5/silver and DR 10/magic, ok? so:
If someone strikes this guy with a mundane weapon, you have DR 10 (the highest of the two... they do not stack).
If someone else strikes this guy with an alchemical silver mundane weapon, he also has DR 10 (ignoring the DR 5/silver).
If even someone else strikes him with a magic weapon made of steel or a material other than silver, he'll have DR 5 (the DR 10/magic will be overcomed).
And if the last attack is a magic silvered weapon, he'll get no DR at all.

The highest applies first. Basically run down the list when something attacks him. Magic? Silver? Resolve.

Jun 23, 2008 11:30:15 -With most things in 3e (templates, DR, spells, etc.), they have the Pyramid Phenomenon going on: The thing at the peak/top matters most.
