-FR Player's Guide Excerpts Elfharrow
Show
In today’s Forgotten Realms Player's Guide preview, we introduce you to a player's perspective of Elfharrow -- where dust devils whip across the sweltering land, and in the distance rises the towering North Wall.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beneath the heights of the North Wall mountain range stretches windswept scrubland that marches to the Shining Sea. Home to tribes of intolerant wild elves and aggressive herds of centaur raiders, Elfharrow is as unwelcoming as it is mysterious.

It isn't. What was released today was the excerpt from the Players Guide; the previous excpert was from the Campaign Guide.

Surprisingly enough, when added to the FRCG Elfharrow excerpt, this gives you a much clearer picture of the area. It's still vague but gives more ground level information.

Yes, put together the two excerpts and they make more sense: the FRCG and FRPG seem to be two halves of a whole.

I'm pleased to see that it looks like they'll be featuring a different regional benefit for every region. I also really enjoyed the motivation & role-playing notes. I'm really looking forward to this book!

I liked these exerpts. Tribal Elves who have to compete in a broken ecosystem and even are at odds with the fey and centaurs for good hunting grounds make for an interesting theme. Very Mad Max. And them using a ruined city as a resource resembles the proces human settlements have in reverse, instead of braving the forest for its bounty the elves use Shiertalar.

The Good
The Imagery: The article does a good job at showing how the region is a desert/badland area.
Sheirtalar: A swamp city. Never really considered anything like that before, but it's an interesting notion. I like it.
Cuivanu: I like that. I think I'll inject that into Elves of Faerûn.

The Bad
"Intolerant Wild Elves": Just don't like the phrasing. Make it seem like defending their homeland is a bad thing or something.
Wild Elves living in stone buildings: The Wild Elves are supposed to be the most 'primitive' and nature-oriented of all of the Elven subraces. I don't like having this group living in stone buildings. Might as well make them Wood Elves, Moon Elves, or Sun Elves.
Misty Vale = Dead Vale: The Misty Vale was an awesome place. People can read about it in Elves of Faerûn. It was already "Points-of-Lightish". This is just unnecessary. Jigga/Quale, I feel sorry for you, since I know you liked the area so much.
"Ropeplaying Tips": I'll put this here every time I read these articles. I don't like people telling me what my characters think/feel/want/etc. Even as a suggestion.

I guess we can only really compair FRCG+PG with the FRCS+PG since the info is split in the new version. However I don´t really see how this region will be relevant to my campaigns anytime soon.

When I read the first exceprt on this place, I was very meh about teh place. Now I am slightly inspired to run an Elven Campaign based out of here... Maybe form the Heroic teir around the Dead vale and evil interlopers from the shadowfell. In fact I may restore the Misty Vale as a whole and say it was brushed to the Feywild (like a certain other 'Elven' settlement). I could really work on the campaign to outline the differences between Eladrin and Elf society (which has always existed, just as High Elves, and low elves).

Also makes a good story for an Elf looking for a cure to the spellplauge ruined land, by making the character fall in with the Order of the blue Flame.... maybe take that same campaign that way around Paragon Tier.

It has been speculated that the elves of Al Quahera where immigrants from Zakhara. I believe they have been mention in other sources as not knowing anything about the old elven empires in Faerun.

-The funny thing is, Imaskar has no 'Arabic' influence. It does, however, have some influence in Kara-Tur/The Eastern Wastes.

The Crypt Of Badr Al-Mosak dates way way way way back to the Desert Of Desolation, first published 1982, tacked onto the Realms in 1987. There's a lot of ancient Egyptian, Sumerian and Middle Eastern influences in those modules, which still lay scattered about the Raurin area.

In the Realms, these things were likely left behind the Mulhorandi, Untherites and the Zakharans up from the south.
