-FR Players Guide Excerpts: Warlock Dark Pact
Show
In today’s Forgotten Realms Player's Guide preview, we describe a new warlock eldritch pact available to choose from when you create a warlock.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have forged a pact with the dark beings that lurk in the shadows of the drow civilization. Spells of darkness, poison, madness, and spite fill your mind. You might turn your powers to noble ends, but you always face the temptation to enhance your spells by hurting your friends—just a little.

-Eh. Read the excerpt.

-Personally speaking, I both like and dislike the concept that, with different 'Pacts', you get different powers.

Why I like it: It definitely adds flavor. A Warlock who gets his/her powers from an evil source will certainly be different from a Warlock who gets his/her powers from a benign source.

Why I don't like it: I sort-of liked the old idea, that the source of the powers was a "fluff" thing that didn't impact the "mechanics". The problem with this, now, is that if the designers focus too much on one specific pact, there will be a lot more options for one than there will another.

The pacts aren't exclusive: you can choose powers from other pacts (though there may be bonuses for powers from your own pact).

-If this is true, then what is the point of creating mechanical bonuses, then? Liken it back to "flavor text", and there you go.

-Is there a WotC pact? I don't know, but I'm sure, at some point, someone will come around and say that that's the Abyssal Pact. ;)

Maybe someday I'll be interested in this pact and want to use it, but for now, eh.

I'm still into the Fey Pact, from the PHB.

This book I may have some interest in. I like the 4e ruleset so I might, even if I abandon the realms, use the genasi, swordmage, Paragon paths....

Yeah, that's the book I'm really looking forward to. Drow, Genasi, Swordmage, "multiclass-only class", new powers, Feats, equipment, magic items, Paragon Paths, and an Epic Destiny. Yep, "ah lak dat uh laut". I imagine it'll also be useful for running a 3E Realms game with 4E rules, as some of the Prestige Classes will see conversion as Paragon Paths, not to mention Genasi stats and such. I'll probably rearrange a few of the gods here and there (replace Tyr with Torm and make Bahamut part of the Triad, move Hoar to the House of the Triad, bring back Myrkul, Bhaal, and Amaunator, and come up with a reason why Myrkul, Lathander, and Amaunator can now co-exist, etc). But beyond that, next time I run a Realms game it'll mostly be the 3E Realms. Hell, if WotC gets that Game Table up and running, maybe I'll run a game there.

-Which brings up the question: Will it be 3e compatible?

-They'd be losing out on a lot, then, I am thinking.

Slightly off topic, but...

I was thinking with the passing of many of the gods of the Pre-spellplague realms, what would be the possibility of creating a Warlock pact with gives a warlock powers from the echos of dead gods like Bhaal and Helm.

This could work with other characters like a Cleric or Paladin as well, but the recent article on the Star Pact has made me wonder of the possibilities of something like that. Or if not an arcane Warlock, perhaps some kind of Divine version of the class. (Perhaps that's what a Fourth Edition Binder might be)?

Rough idea, and not enough to post it to it's own thread in my mind (yet), but fits with the topic of warlock pacts for the realms.

I hope this is okay.

-In 3e, Warlock Pacts were left up in the air, and didn't have any kinds of mechanical differences. 4e changed that, and I like that. For making up new pacts, I can definitely see something with the power of dead deities (Perhaps their essences augment the individual, in exchange for having a 'host' body to inhabit, creating a sort of symbiotic/parasitic relationship). Also, I can see 'pacts' with the different Bloodlines that Pathfinder has- Draconic, Elemental, Demonic, Infernal, and as on.

That could likely be a Paragon path, one for each dead deity. With powers linked to those deities. The question would be if you select the Mystra version two Paragon path would that prevent you from using Bhaal warlock abilities?

-I don't know, since apparently you can use the powers of other pacts. Mind you, I know about this much of the 4e rules, so maybe someone else can come along and help with that.

Actually the game table will be setting and edition neutral, its kinda like a virtual version of the table you play with your group usually, only that it´s online. No rules are enforced or tracked, the only thing they add is a dice roller.
But since it won´t come out this year.....things can still change so don´t hold your breath.

-That's a step in the right direction, then. Though, it'd be a lot easier if there were rule tracker things. Like HP, of spells, or whatever.

Sounds good at first, but this would mean that housruling would be tough since you would have to modify the powers (code). Having a hit point total above each character miniature that can be set by DM and player is certanly doable - but I would prefer more freedom than set rules, especially since D&D is not that tough to track.

Of course it would be good if they added a timer that shows initiative order for everyone so that all the players can see it.
