Why? Why does it HAVE to be Drizzt on the cover? I hope that art is not the final choice.

It's possible it that's a gold dragon, as 4E gold dragons are not automatically good.

The rider is supposed to be a shade knight.

-Not to muddy the waters, but that looks like a Wyvern to me. Don't see any back legs, and the front "wings" look like they are the creature's arms, due to the prehensile "fingers". ;)

-That said, though, concerning both what was chosen to be on the cover, and the actual artwork itself...No, it's not my cup of tea, either.
#14

markustay63

I think that was a painting someone did for LotR that was never bought for the MeRPs setting that was leftover... or some such. Defiantely a Nazgul there... so much for not being 'derivitive' in 4e.

Isn't that the city being beseiged in the final battle down below? What was it... Minas Tirith or some such? Its been years since I read those books...

And it can't be a Wyvern, because the one major distinguishing feature a Wyvern ALWAYS has is its Stinger-tail. ;)

Perhaps it's a young Gold, who hasn't gotten it's whiskers yet.

Its nice to see someone's 'Shadowcrap' is still getting top billing, now that Ed's weave is gone.

I need to take a few more days break again...
#15

Khaelieth

May 13, 2008 13:48:07
Well, i think it looks most like a gold, if you take a look at the face. And it's no wyvern, it's got no stinger and it's got arms, as i think you can see the right leg poking out. And think those thingies on the wings are just artistic license, as they continue on.

-Looks like a stinger on the tail to me. Looks fairly sharp. And, I don't see any hind legs, either. That...piece of it, to the right of the creature's chin, doesn't look like a leg, or part of a leg, to me.

markustay63

May 13, 2008 14:10:13
Well, according to official sources (Rich, I believe, or perhaps Brian), it's a picture of a Shade mounted on a Dragon, so there you go.

Its obviously a young Dragon, hence my comment about it not having whiskers - I like the idea that dragons get them as they get older, which is why those Celestial Dragons of the east always have such long ones. To other Dragons, they would be a way for a Dragon to show its age, and demand respect, much like a Dwarf's beard does for him.

I just made all of that up, but I like it, so I figured I'd share.
#18

Stigger

May 13, 2008 14:35:43
Body shape, particularly the head, says either a White Dragon, based on horn curvature, Copper Dragon for much the same reason, or a Shadow Dragon... which seems most likely given that its a Shade. Shadow Dragon's mouth seems the closest match since they seem to have relatively thin and narrow upper jaws. Amazing what you'll look up when you're procrastinating...

May 13, 2008 14:44:57
That's not Minas Tirith in the background, but it sure doesn't look like anything in the Realms, either.

markustay63

May 13, 2008 15:24:42
Hence, a rather generic picture of a dragonrider (much like the original DL advertisements), to sell a rather generic new setting.

D&D has gone the way of home-cooked meals - cheap and easy to produce mass-market crap packed with 'fillers' and with very little in the way of value. Sadly, WotC has become the 'fast food' of the RPG industry.

-It's a flying Netherese enclave. Being as that the Shade Enclave is surrounded by a forboding shadow, that's not the Shade Enclave (or a bad interpretation of it). That said, it must be the other flying Netherese enclave, Sakkors.

Except for Salvatore, that sounds like the Pathfinder team. :D

Then again, he's probably next, now that WotC forced him to kill Wulfgar, Bruenor, and cattie-Brie (Regis may be alive).

Anyhow, its just a picture, and although I don't think it really captures the spirit of the old realms, it certainly captures the new one.

And rarely does cover art accurately portray anything in a product (like the air-ships that appeared on BOTH SS products) - this exact topic has just come up over at CK regarding the novels as well.

They're just 'pretty pictures', after all, NOT illustrations, painted with the sole purpose of capturing people's attention... nothing more.

If we knew who the artist was, we could probably track it down. When I make Avatars for the site, I try to always find the original painting, which is usually hosted on the artist's own homepage (I've only found one exception to that).

The artists usually put high-res images on their site, and only Elmore makes it difficult to download the image (although thats easily circumvented).

I only do it to make Avatars for the WotC site though, because they already own the rights, so I'm not doing anything 'funky'.

That reminds me, I have about 600 more I need to mail to Mel... :lightbulb

Yes - I have just learned about something called 'implied abusive language' - you don't need to actual type out the word to get in trouble for it. I was unaware of that.

Funny, I've been doing that for the last 16 months here, every now and again, but only got in trouble for it twice in the last twentyfour hours.

I do that on plenty of sites, but this is the first one that pointed out it was against the rules.

markustay63

May 17, 2008 13:55:13
Yeah, it was a bizarre way to do things - nobody had the same rules because they wouldn't update the factions simultaneaously. It really was frustrating.

I did go out and buy a Wood Elf army when it came out, because I thought the minis were gorgeous, but it remains a 'virgin' (totally un-played). I painted a bunch of Ogre minis when that came out as well, but those were sold on E-Bay as part of the Tsunami relief fundraiser we did. I could probably even cobble together a Dark Elf or Vampire Counts army (a small one), because I have tons of odds and ends from both of those lines as well.

But yeah, it got too expensive, and turned into a hobby for collectors, not gamers. Iron Kingdoms, with its much smaller warbands seemed to be the way to go (I have two armies there as well). One day I'll finish my Warjack with REAL working LEDs for eyes.

Should fetch a pretty penny on E-Bay. :D

I tell you, there's just so much good stuff out there right now, I'm at at loss to choose just one.

Thats a reference to the new 4e setting they are coming out with, not anything that they currently publish.

Which is what I'm here for.

I'm not going to a 4e board to discuss the Realms, because anything I know about no longer matters, and anything anyone there can tell me I really could care less about.

See the dilema?

I want to go to a board that discusses a setting I play in.

BTW, I have no argument with those people, it's just that we have nothing in common.

I have a problem with your #2 -

1e, 2e, and 3e were NEVER referred to as new settings, and although the timeline was moved forward a bit, almost everything in the earlier edition books remained true.

My point was that all three previous edition books are no longer valid, because the geography has changed and the NPCs are all dead. There is not much in them that counts in 4e. The people on the 4e FR boards may be nice, helpful folks, but everything they can tell me has NO bearing on what I play in. Just like I don't go to the Eberron boards to ask questions, I won't go there either. Nor will I be obnoxious and try to force my own version of FR down their throats. Anything I could possibly contribute is quite worthless now.

It is a different setting, plain and simple, and the company that is publishing it has said it was NUMEROUS times.

I don't have anything against 4e or its fans at this point - I'm over that - but I'm a realist, and its time to move on.

What confuses me the most is why you guys, of all people, would care if I no longer plan to participate on the WotC boards.

I'm not a 'victim' - never said I was. I'm just making a decision to move on.

Hello? We are getting 3 FR books for 4e. Unless you can supersede thousands of pages of lore in 3 hardcovers, your old FR books are just as valid as the numerous 2e books have been for me in my 3e games.

Frankly, I couldn't care. I've always found whining much less constructive then doing what I can as a consumer, which is to not purchase the products I don't want. I like being positive, which is why I'm recommending to people that they try out Pathfinder. It really is very good.

@Uzzy - so far I like what I see, but I will wait until I have both systems... and maybe both worlds... firmly in hand, before I make a final decision.

Whichever world I use (if I use either), I will still probably follow both, PF because it something new, and Elaine and Ed (not to mention everyone else over there) are just to hard to resist. FR because, frankly, I still have a deep love for the setting itself, so even if I don't buy any of the RPG products or game in it, I will still pick up the occassional novel just to see whats going on.

My decision to not participate in the 4e boards has nothing to do with spite, anger, or "voting with my Wallet". It has to do with the fact that I know myself, and I don't want to spoil other people's enjoyment just because I don't like something. 4e FR must be given a chance to garner it's own, new audience, and I shouldn't stand in its way.

To be all 'puke-mushy' for a sec -

Besides, the Genasi Kingdom does sound mildly interesting... even if it should've been placed in Calimshan. :P
