#1 suin_bahhar_02 May 27, 2009 12:59:48	Same as my previous threads on possible lectures of wizards on spelltheory. What does a transmuter do to his physique to be able to breath water? Why is the reed or piece of straw needed as component? I like to visualize this spell creates a small bubble of air around the nose and mouth of the caster, which is filtered from the water surrounding the caster. A reed or straw can usually be seen collecting these small bubbles under their serrated edged leaves when looked at beneath the surface. This same effect is refracted to the submerged caster in an enhanced form during the casting.
#2 lord_karsus May 27, 2009 13:50:54	-The spell could temporarily alter the caster, giving him/her gills, allowing him/her to access oxygen diffused into the water like a fish does. Perhaps the spell just mimics that process, and allows the caster to access the oxygen diffused into the water without gills. If you want to be symbolic, reed or straw can be used as straws (as in what are used for drinks), which suck the liquid out of the container, which the spell might be doing, sucking the oxygen out of the water, for the caster.
#3 red_wizard May 27, 2009 16:51:00	It could also create a bubble of sustainable oxygen around the casters head, the staw or reed being used to blow the magic into the water, forming the bubble you submerge into. -RW
