I am planning a 4e campaign in the FR.  The PC's are all changelings.  I was thumbing thru a 3e book ("Dragons of Faerun") for background historical ideals.  I found a section (page 93) on the order of dragons known as "The confluence".  To sum it up they seem to against shapeshifter of all types.  If any one knows of more information on this group, other than in this book please let me know.

Other points of interest are:
the malaugrym
the Unseen

Thanks for your help,
 George

City of Spendors: Waterdeep has info on the Unseen.

Monsters of Faerun has info on Malaugrym.

Hope that helps.

I've not seen any mention of The Confluence before the entry you mentioned in Dragon's of Faerûn.

However, you've got plenty of meat in that description and 100 years to work with.

Any thoughts on how you plan to use them? Helpers for the party? Foes against them? Since Elminster has been marginalized by the Spellplague, do you foresee the confluence going after Lady Nael Irlingstar? Are the Malaugrym back in force now in Waterdeep?

Whatever you choose, you've picked one hell of an apple. I'm curious to see what you do.

First let me say I'm not a expert on the FR.  I picked up a few FR 3rd Edition books cheap to use as historical/background information.  That is how I came to learn about the Confluence.  The party is generally 'good' aligned and so is the Confluence.  The party is a group of changelings and the Confluence generally dislikes 'shapeshifter' (even though the silver dragons took human form).  There will most likely a point were there paths will cross.  How the PC's react will deterime what way the story line goes.

Well I don't want to say to much more because some of my players may be reading this.

Here is some of the information I've given to my players (some of it has been gathered from other forums, so credit goes to the orginal author):

Changelings did not exist in forgotten realms until 4th edition, doppelgangers have however. I haven't found definitive information on changelings in the forgotten Realms and their place in society. So here is the way it is going to be:

- Changelings appeared during the spell plague. Most likely it was your grandparents generation that arrived in Faerun.

- As a comparison to Doppelgangers/changelings you could use Drow/elves (with respect to culture) or Eladrin/Elves (with respect to how they appeared). The general population does not recognize them as separate races because little factual information is known, what most people know comes from scary stories they were told as a chld. Because doppelgangers have had a dark, mysterious and untrustworthy persona in the past, when the changelings appeared those of them that attempted to come out to the public were considered as doppelgangers up to some trickery. In general changelings need to hide their natural identity.

- The characters in this campaign have banded together to have each others back and to have a social life were they can be open.

- Changeling have a distinctive culture, which aids their survival. Changelings are not cross-fertile with other races. Therefore, they need to be able to recognize each other, if only to find potential mates. Changeling can recognize another instantly if their passive Insight is higher than the other's passive Bluff. It is considered bad form to expose another Changeling, so Changelings who find one another while disguised usually arrange to meet somewhere private and exchange notes.

what books do you have??

and did you think to check out the Forgotten Realms wiki?

forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Malaugrym

umm as for the changelings not existing in the realms beofre the plague.... well if your the DM, they could exsited before hand, they just would not let anyone know about their abilities so that they would not be hunted down being confused with the dopplegangers...

A little, haven't had much tome for this subject.  I've been running the local encounters games and the PHB3 day. I thought this weekend I would have time to look into this upcoming campaign, but as it turns out I will running BALD1-6 (a LFR mod) this Monday night, so any free time will be sent on that endevour.

Thanks for asking.  If you have any suggestions I would like to hear them.

Found some interresting 3rd ed homebrew lore and mechanics on doppelgangers here. Really nice ecology and some good explenations on their genderless breeding habits

Furthermore, in Fearun there are greater doppelgangers whose brain eating method of assuming new forms enables even better impersonisation because of absorbation of skills and spellcasting. Its only natural these beings would lord over the secret organisations such as Waterdeeps the Unseen.
