| #1colmanAug 25, 2008 3:38:12 | I just noticed this morning that the new Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide talks of Ao creating the sphere that Toril exists in from the phlogiston ... it's also pretty clear that the other planets are still where they were, so Spelljammer still fits into the updated setting. |
| #2lord_karsusAug 25, 2008 12:27:56 | -Right. It continued to exist in 3e as well. It'd doubtful that there will be much (if any at all) development on Spelljamming (like in 3e), but it was minimalized enough for those who don't like it to ignore it, and enough for those who do like it to still be able to use it. |
| #3lord_karsusAug 29, 2008 14:24:13 | -Bump, to see if this garners any more conversation in this section. |
| #4barthalasAug 29, 2008 14:42:55 | Hmmm... I missed that reference. I'll have to go back and read it again. Personally I loved Spelljamming (especially the Elven Armada) but I would prefer on way of getting from one world to the next, either Spelljamming or through the planar portals but not both. I also though that the concept of Spelljamming would have been better served by calling it Astral Jamming and using the Astral instead of the Phlogiston. |

Basically, Spelljamming is primarily concerned with distance, whereas Planewalking is primarily concerned with...transcending the boundaries of reality. -Since 4e renamed the Astral Plane the 'Astral Sea', I was figuring that Spelljamming was going to get retconned into 'Astraljamming', and that it'd combine Spelljammer and Planescape: That is, you sail the astral sea, going into different planes and such. |

True... but you could still use it as a transient device for getting from one world to the next. I would have preferred that there was only one transient way but it's not all that bad having both. -Since 4e renamed the Astral Plane the 'Astral Sea', I was figuring that Spelljamming was going to get retconned into 'Astraljamming', and that it'd combine Spelljammer and Planescape: That is, you sail the astral sea, going into different planes and such. Yeah, I was thinking that as well but nothing like that so far. |
| #7krownhunter07Aug 29, 2008 16:26:50 | I'd liked to have more on Spelljamming, myself. I always liked that the Elves had learned of it and was a bit sad it never got expanded on. |

That is what I was figuring myself....though I think they shouldn't mix them. Planescape: Fantasy punk and well soo metareality. Spelljammer: Something that Jules Vern would come up with if magic existed. I love both concepts based on there own mixing them...well destroys both. |
| #10rauricAug 29, 2008 21:10:44 | I dislike the old spelljamming but I think I may like the new version of it (my theory). The "new version" I think they may do is have the ships but make them "sail" through the astral sea and work in Planescape in the meantime. When I was younger I liked both concpets but I do not lke them now. I think the flying ships can work now while the pcs are exploring the Plane (and other worlds). |
| #11lord_karsusAug 30, 2008 11:41:54 | True... but you could still use it as a transient device for getting from one world to the next. I would have preferred that there was only one transient way but it's not all that bad having both. -With Planewalking, you'd have to make "pit stops". Like, say you're on the Elemental Plane of Air. You'd have to teleport from there to presumably Sigil. Then, from Sigil, you'd take a portal to whatever world it is that you want to go with. With Spelljamming, it's just a straight run. I'd liked to have more on Spelljamming, myself. I always liked that the Elves had learned of it and was a bit sad it never got expanded on. -There's plenty on Elven Spelljammering in Evermeet: Island of the Elves, and Realmspace. |
| #12lord_karsusAug 30, 2008 11:44:19 | That is what I was figuring myself....though I think they shouldn't mix them. -I'm pretty sure that the two can be mixed already: Fly a Spelljammer through a portal, and suddenly you have a Spelljamming Planewalking vessel. That said, the genres that define the two, as you say, I think are pretty compatible, so long as the...outrageousness of Spelljammer is cut back a little bit, and Spelljammering crews are treated a bit more like regular sailors. Thus, it makes a good combination in Sigil. Plenty o' Berks 'round. |
