| #2johnkretzerSep 01, 2008 23:23:19 | Well it was nice to see feats for moon elves, wild elves, etc. It would also have been nice to see thyat taking say the moon elf feat means you can't take the gold elf feat... |
| #3Dark_Wizard_02Sep 01, 2008 23:25:25 | I see lots of feats related to deities, that's a good thing to see. Good to see drow, genasi and Swordmages getting feat options too. Being prominent crunchy bits of FR, they should get support and options right out of the gate. |
| #4GreenKnightSep 01, 2008 23:26:15 | And here's the Feat list. Name: Angharradh’s Favor Hmm. You have to worship Bahamut to take Berronar's Salve? Sounds like an error, to me. Hopefully it's just an error with the article, and not one that's in the book. |
| #5lord_karsusSep 01, 2008 23:26:57 | -This belongs in the Running the Realms section. I'll have it moved there. |
| #6lord_karsusSep 01, 2008 23:29:29 | -I'm not sure why 'Moon Elf Resilience' exists, but...okay? It's too bad that 4e is perpetuating the inane Green Elf = Wood and Wild Elf retcon from 3e. I was hoping, with the more general 'Elf' term being used that this incorrect retcon would be undone. Oh well. -How do feats work in 4e? Like 3e? |
| #7naexSep 01, 2008 23:29:44 | -This belongs in the Running the Realms section. I'll have it moved there. 18Delta already posted one there. |
| #818DELTASep 01, 2008 23:29:49 | http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/4ex/20080902a -Leaves lurk mode. -GK not to be a buzz kill.Isn't this the wrong forum for this topic? This is all mechanical not Lore. ;) No sweat I have started a thread in the Running the Realms Forum. :P -Re-enters lurk mode. 18DELTA ![]() |
| #9lord_karsusSep 01, 2008 23:31:00 | 18Delta already posted one there. -I'll have them merged, then. |
| #10GreenKnightSep 01, 2008 23:34:53 | No sweat I have started a thread in the Running the Realms Forum. :P Yep. Started one nine minutes later! I beat you, Delta! I... BEAT... YOU!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!! ![]() |
| #11naexSep 01, 2008 23:36:56 | I was working on an artifact (check it out on Running the Realms) and forgot to check the WotC site, so I guess I lose this round too. |
| #1218DELTASep 01, 2008 23:39:06 | Yep. Started one nine minutes later! -Leaves lurk mode. -Ok ![]() -Re-enter's lurk mode. 18DELTA ![]() |
| #13GreenKnightSep 01, 2008 23:45:36 | Anyway, until these threads get merged... - Every single Lawful Good, Good, and Unaligned Greater God/Lesser God got a Channel Divinity Feat, save for Bahamut, Corellon, and Moradin. But they've got them in the PHB, so no need for them to get another one in the FRPG. - Only Angharradh's Favor tells you what that power does. The rest simply say "Use Channel Divinity to invoke X". Damn. Really would've liked to have know what the rest did. - The Feats Ghostwise Heritage, Gold Dwarf Pride, Moon Elf Resilience, Sun Elf Grace, Wild Elf Luck, and Wood Elf Agility are, hopefully an indication that we'll see more information about the various subraces in the FRPG. And hopefully, an Eladrin character who selects Moon Elf Resilience won't be able to choose Sun Elf Grace later on. - Intelligent Blademaster is a pretty damn nice Feat. You can probably forego Strength entirely with a Swordmage character with that Feat. Hopefully we'll see more Feats like that down the road for other classes. - Looks like whoever said that Student of Sword Magic would be the Feat that grants a Swordmage a use of a spellbook was right. -Ok You may call me... The Lord of the Funk! |
| #14Dark_Wizard_02Sep 01, 2008 23:45:38 | -I'm not sure why 'Moon Elf Resilience' exists, but...okay? It's too bad that 4e is perpetuating the inane Green Elf = Wood and Wild Elf retcon from 3e. I was hoping, with the more general 'Elf' term being used that this incorrect retcon would be undone. Oh well. Did they retcon that back or not yet? I'm confused. The feats don't seem like the same set up as in 3e. Most of them seem like they fit into the daily/per encounter/at will framework. Or they enhance racial abilities or other racial feats. |
| #15eviscSep 01, 2008 23:59:32 | 4e feats pretty much work like 3e feats. They tend to be less powerful and have less requirements though, and characters usually have more of them. |
| #16lord_karsusSep 02, 2008 0:07:44 | Did they retcon that back or not yet? I'm confused. -Apparently not, being as that there are separate 'Wood Elf' and 'Wild Elf' feats. I was figuring that, based on the fact that both use the D&D 'Elf' stats, and are considered 'Elves', that retcon would be...unretconed? Deretconed? Reretconed? Retretconed? 4e feats pretty much work like 3e feats. They tend to be less powerful and have less requirements though, and characters usually have more of them. -Gotcha. |
| #17SmartPaladinSep 02, 2008 0:12:22 | Hmm... Interesting... I can now say I see many Eladrin Swordmages now... Well, at least alot more then I had been picturing. |
| #18Dark_Wizard_02Sep 02, 2008 0:15:37 | 4e feats pretty much work like 3e feats. They tend to be less powerful and have less requirements though, and characters usually have more of them. Yeah, I noticed that about them. They feel different, not a bad thing. Feats having consistent scaling between different types of feats or different feat trees was a sticky point for 3e. Post-Modern Hyperconed! But yeah, the Wood/Wild elf distinction is weird, given the desire of 4E to slim down the subraces. |
| #19johnkretzerSep 02, 2008 0:24:38 | -This belongs in the Running the Realms section. I'll have it moved there. Actualy if we keep this thread focus on the lore implications of these feats can't we keep it separate? |
| #20lord_karsusSep 02, 2008 0:30:37 | Actualy if we keep this thread focus on the lore implications of these feats can't we keep it separate? -Well, sure, but there's a fine line. I haven't put the order in, so if the discussion drifts that way, it's fine. |
| #21BadCatManSep 02, 2008 0:39:36 | I have a feeling that the subraces of old will now be represented by feats. For example, take a Dwarf, give them Gold Dwarf Pride, and you have a Gold Dwarf. A Halfling with Ghostwise Heritage becomes a Ghostwise Halfling. Apart from the Elf and Eladrin split, but that would go something like Wood/Wild and Moon/Sun/Star, etc. Hmm. It makes sense to cut back on the accelerated evolution that subraces imply, and it shifts the subrace traits back onto culture and upbringing where I feel they belong. I like this, but these don't seem to match very well with the subracial stats of old - where is the Gold Dwarf's aberration combat ability, or Ghostwise telepathy? Then again, these could be put back in regional traits, I don't know. |
| #22askanipsionSep 02, 2008 0:48:38 | Wow!! Angharradh’s Favor!! Looks like she will be getting attention. I still think she is Sehanine. The swordmage feats rock!! |
| #23Dark_Wizard_02Sep 02, 2008 0:50:42 | Some of those have to be shifted into different types of feats depending on the type of power/ability the feat grants. Like the Aberration combat bonus sounds more like a cultural thing while ghostwise telepathy might be more racial. Shifting the more similar subraces to racial feats is a good move, especially now since racial feats are a part of character progression (as far as I've heard). |

Moon Elves:the most out going and friendly to non-elves. Gold Elves:were more intellectual types... It is the one of the failings of 4th ed for me is that mechanics don't seem to support flavor anymore. Also like I said there should have included a lock out clause for them... |

| #26Another_GnomeSep 02, 2008 3:24:59 | It is the one of the failings of 4th ed for me is that mechanics don't seem to support flavor anymore. It's deliberate, though. 4E mindset is that the mechanics of a given rule work regardless of the flavor built around it; as such, I doubt there will be a limitation on taking both moon elf and sun elf heritage feats, because the flavor of it is for the player to decide. (And really, what else does having dual heritage mean but precisely that?) |
| #27oluevaraSep 02, 2008 8:34:29 | -Apparently not, being as that there are separate 'Wood Elf' and 'Wild Elf' feats. I was figuring that, based on the fact that both use the D&D 'Elf' stats, and are considered 'Elves', that retcon would be...unretconed? Deretconed? Reretconed? Retretconed? I can't say i see this as being all that much of a retcon. 2e sources were pretty clear that the elves down in Misty Vale were culturally different from the ones up in New Earlann. I don't have a problem with talking about them as different subraces. I DO have a problem with the "green" subraces and moon/sun/star now all of the sudden being different races altogether. That's a far worse retcon. |
| #28BadCatManSep 02, 2008 8:51:43 | I thought that was representing Ghostwise telepathy...? I misread it. :embarrass Still, that ability could just as easily be "Hey, buddy, keep your eyes and ears peeled.", less than a fully fledged telepathy. It comes to mind that there's a certain amount of awkwardness in trying to translate racial stats across editions, wherein abilities that were perfectly fine in one edition are imbalanced in the next, or are no longer possible. And some old racial powers never really fit the flavour (telepathy on a bunch of tribal halflings, for example), but the discontinuity is jarring. |

Rich Baker has mentioned as much. The feats do seem not very representive of what the sub-races were... -Exactly. Like I said in my original post, "I'm not sure why 'Moon Elf Resilience' exists, but...okay". It seems that, in this case, Moon Elves were arbitrarily picked, as to give them a new feat. Nothing else ever makes mention about how Moon Elves are known for their magical, legendary, resistance. They're not, which is what makes it...funny. |
| #30lord_karsusSep 02, 2008 10:25:46 | I can't say i see this as being all that much of a retcon. 2e sources were pretty clear that the elves down in Misty Vale were culturally different from the ones up in New Earlann. I don't have a problem with talking about them as different subraces. -Two things: (A) It implies that Elves evolve, which they do not, being as that 'Wood Elves' are supposed to be of mixed Wild, Moon and Sun Elf heritage. (B) Being different culturally does not a new race make. The Sun Elves of Lyrandrar are every bit as "savage" as 'Wild Elves'. Do they need to be separated into a new subrace? Culturally, I am much different from a native on the Trobriandi Islands. Genetically, however, we are nearly identical. |
| #31johnkretzerSep 02, 2008 11:44:01 | It's deliberate, though. 4E mindset is that the mechanics of a given rule work regardless of the flavor built around it; as such, I doubt there will be a limitation on taking both moon elf and sun elf heritage feats, because the flavor of it is for the player to decide. The '4th edition mindset' has always been the mindest of D&D. You could always call mechanics whatever you want. This isn't new. But with FR lore the various elves were different not just culturally but physicaly as well. The feats really don't say to me ah yes this is a moon elf or this is a gold elf, ewc. So the feats really just completely fail in there intended purpose I would say which to recapture the old lore on FR elves. Lore whicvh states I believe a elf born of duel heritage would favor one parent over the other one. |

I was going to say the same thing... Also I was really hoping to see some confirmation that their will be ways you can take feats to obtain spellplaque related powers. I'm still hopeful for a PP or two, but to be honest that means the variation in those powers are going to very specific.. ![]() |
| #33GreenKnightSep 03, 2008 0:18:24 | Also I was really hoping to see some confirmation that their will be ways you can take feats to obtain spellplaque related powers. I'm still hopeful for a PP or two, but to be honest that means the variation in those powers are going to very specific.. Bear in mind that these are a preview of the Feats in the book. They're not the sum total of all the feats in the book. In addition, there've been several mentions of spellplague related powers (Spellscars). The RPGA rules, for instance, state that everything from the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide is available for play, save for the Backgrounds and spellscarred rules. There's also been mention of spellscars being acquired by way of a "multiclass-only class". In fact, you can find one such power here |
| #34marius4Sep 03, 2008 1:58:26 | Maybe I should ask this here?? Any thoughts on what the channel divinity feats in the FRPG preview might do? (Curse that stinkin' divinity feat summary format!) Eyes of Selune - While the 2e shooting stars would be cool (:ayyyy! , I imagine this will probably go more the route of a divination utility. I'd guess it...
Any other ideas, for any of the divinity feats named? |
| #35naexSep 03, 2008 2:01:51 | Maybe I should ask this here?? Really belongs in Running the Realms - you might want to start a thread to let other post their ideas over there. - Great ideas... ![]() |
