Fzoul's current role

There seems to be some conflict on the current role of Fzoul Chembryl.

Pg. 238, FRCG: "Hierarchy: Bane's authoritarian religion maintains a strict chain of command. His temples resemble fortresses as much as houses of worship, and each has a single leader, usually a powerful priest, known as a preceptor. Preceptors report to high preceptors, one in each nation, and they in turn report to the grand preceptor, the Chosen Tyrant of Bane in Mulmaster."

So, there IS still a Chosen Tyrant of Bane. However, in the description of Fzoul (immediately following the Organization section of the Church of Bane), it specifically says, "Fzoul Chembryl was once the Chosen Tyrant of Bane." Now, I know that Fzoul is now a demigod/exarch, but that doesn't mean that he can't still be the Chosen Tyrant; AND, in fact, he holds the Scepter of the Chosen Tyrant which would seem to indicate that he is still the Chosen Tyrant. But there's still the conflict of the text saying "once was" (which, to me, would indicate that he is no longer) and the fact that he holds the Scepter of the Chosen Tyrant.

I'm inclined to disregard the "was once" portion of his description and continue with him being the Chosen Tyrant. If for no other reasons than it doesn't say who the new Chosen Tyrant is if it's not Fzoul, and the fact that Fzoul is too egotistical to allow someone else to be the Chosen Tyrant even if he is an Exarch now.

Anyone have any concrete clarification? Or, even, what you're using in your campaigns?

He is no longer a Chosen. When he died, he was 'reborn' as an Exarch and given the Scepter of the Chosen Tyrant as a reminder of his failure and that it would not be tolerated again.

He is no longer a mortal, and just like Exarch's of other gods are not Chosen, Fzoul is beyond that now (but, arguably, in a worse situation*).

*By worse, I mean he blew it once and is on thin ice.

Unless, I'm mistaken, it doesn't explicitly state that an Exarch cannot be a Chosen. When Fzoul was only a Chosen, his weapon was the Scepter of the Tyrant's Eye and a completely different weapon. The Scepter of the Tyrant's Eye was destroyed when Netheril razed Zhentil Keep and Fzoul was killed. When he was raised as an Exarch, yes, Bane gave him the Scepter of the Chosen Tyrant, not necessarily "as a reminder of his failure and that it would not be tolerated again" but specifically "as a tool and as a reminder of what Fzoul lost to the Shadovar." Why give him a wholly different weapon, specifically called the Scepter of the Chosen Tyrant if he is not the Chosen Tyrant? In fact, why raise him at all if Bane was just going to take another Chosen?

You're right, he is no longer a mortal, but there were also immortal Chosen in 3.5. And, if 4th edition, all Chosen are now immortal. There's nothing that says a god cannot title one of his Exarchs also as his Chosen... and, imo, especially in Bane's and Fzoul's situation, it makes sense.

Plus, for now being a demigod, Fzoul's power is fairly weak. He's on par with Manshoon and certainly less powerful than Szass Tam, neither of which hold any divine power whatsoever.

I think you're right. IIRC, the text only says there are currently no Chosen who aren't Exarchs.

So it is, PG 72 FRCG... But it also says that Chosen are mortals and they could ascend to Exarch, so it kind of contradicts itself.

Anyways, you can consider it either way. Fzoul is an Exarch or an Exarch and Chosen. It doesn't really make a difference that I can see.

Err, unless you have a PC that wants to be Banes Chosen, but then he'll just have to fight for it.

Oh well. I guess people should just interpret that how they want then.

-The case could be made that he has been useless for a long time now, with his penchant for failure and being a front-runner, when it comes to deities, and all that.

Poor Fzoul! He use to be useful; I mean, he did kind of work with Oghma and Mask directly to all but save Faerun from Cyric's Cyrinishad. He even let Mask break his pretty nose!

Well, I shall have to make Fzoul useful and intriguing again... at least in my campaign.

That's actually the reason why I posed the question in the first place; his "duty title" will directly affect his usefulness, as well as the course and outcome of my campaign.

I believe he is Bane's liason with the eastern lands now.

In fact, he brought back a wonderous discovery from there - Noodles!

So now he is simply know as 'Pasta Fzoul'. ;)

Wrong.

The REAL story is that he converted to yet another religion...that of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
