| #1The_High_BlademageFeb 15, 2010 16:54:36 | Well before you star yelling at me, yes I sould create defferent topics about each subject but I couldnt help it :P . Allthought I consider myself an old fan of the realms I have some very basik questions: P.S: I want to thank u in advance cause you must be brave enought to read all this text (^^) Now, to the topic: 1) Im still working with a 3rd edition group and a player asked a nice question: What is the purpose of the magig sigils, I meen the ones that are personal for each spellcaster? What's the meaning if I cast Scribe Rune on my spellbook or my belongings? Do I get a cookie or something? And why do mystra curses those who copy it. Is it so important??? 2) I do not understand the defferece between Calling a Creature and Summoning a creature? ex: Had Ertoo, in Salavatore's "Crystall Shard", been Called or Summoned??? Why did Drizzt said: "I'll banish you for 100 years??" since he couldn't cast banishment. Did deamons rebirth after they die??? If yes, how can they actualy die? 3) Somebody please help me with the planes. Who do they work. Material plane all clear. Now the tough parts. Is the shadow plane something lke a mirror in some places??? ex: can I find a shadow copy of Luskan or Waterdeep?? Will it be inhabited?? If yes by what creatures??? Is something about the plane that I sould now about??? (I heard that you can travel faster or something. Only via spell or not???) In the outer planes is there something that mimics Toril like the shadow plane??? If not then how it is like to live there??? Only monsters and the God's dominions??? Aren't there any cities???? 4) A wizard able to cast fly and invisibility is powerfull enough to rob an antire city without geting caught; that's ok if you controll the NPCs but what if a player does??? Sould I let him??? What can the peaseants do. In Neverwinter for example the wizard enters a magic shop. I guess not every owner of a magic shop is a powerfull wizard. how do they proterct their equipment???? |

I'll do my best to answer yours. 1) Mage Sigils, in pre-Spellplauge Realms any way, is like a Mages ID. Each Mage has a unique sigil that, because of Mysta's Tri-Fold curse, cannot be easily copied, So the Sigils can be used for marking ones property, or sighning legal documents or what ever, also it would stop people from impersonating mages, Like some one is not likely to disguise themselves as Elminster and walk about town proclaiming themselves Elminster and demanding gold or something, You cant even copy Elminster's Sigil? Youre not Elminster! So the Sigils are a good way of Mage Verification. 2) Calling a creature would be like calling a nearby creature on the Same plane as you, if your Summoning a creature, You're bringing it forth from another Plane. And its my understanding that yes Deamons rebirth after they die, unless you kill them on their home plane. 3) Yeah the Planes can be a little werid, Think of them like different Layers of Reality, or the planes are like different channels on a TV, its the same TV but change the Channel and your going to get an entirely diffrerent show. Yes the Shadow Plane is like a mirror. but it mostly mirrors Landscapes and natural features, I dont think Man Made things like citys would have a reflection in the Shadow Plane, you as DM could always change that and say there is a Shadow Waterdeep if you wanted. Or Shadow beings in the Shadowplane could have and probably do, build cities in the Shadow PLane. No the Outerplanes do not mirror Toril, but yes there are still some cities around, A god's deceased followers have got to have a place to stay right? And the Devils and Demons have cities too, they got too live somewhere. 4) This is really up to you. Do you want to let him? Personally I see any body who is running a Magic Shop as being a competent wizard, and it's probably not the first time some invisible tried to rob them, hes probably wearing spectacles of true sight or something, Also there could be a curse on all the items, until you actually buy something at which point the curse could be lifted then. It stands to reason that they would have some loss prevention plan in place, especially in a world of high magic. |

Im not saying that citys arent going to have a shadowcopy, but I dont think all of them would. It is possible depending on the DM that theres a Shadow Waterdeep and a Shadow Shadowdale or whatever, really I think its a copy of the natural landscape, shadow beings might be inclined to build shadow cities where there a corrasponding cities in the "real" world, but at the same time there could be Shadow cities where there are no coresponding real world cities or perhaps a Shadow forest where Arabel would be. I dont think theyve really said one way or the other so really its up to the DM. |
| #5sfdragonFeb 15, 2010 20:46:24 | They explained the sahdow mulsantir becuase the plane of shadow( now shadowfell) touched the Realms closely there... Otherwise, I'd have to agree with you there Silversword. but for all we know, shadowwaterdeep might just be a volcano........ |
| #6faraerFeb 15, 2010 23:17:01 | Magic shops, in the sense of relatively common, public places that sell magic items -- the idea Leiber ridiculed in "The Bazaar of the Bizarre" -- don't really exist in the Realms. What you more often have are strange, mysterious, little-known curio shops that just might, according to rumour, house a magic gewgaw or two. And without doing a great deal of mundane and magical research, you don't know what magical wards, traps and hanging spells such a place has, what hidden magical defenders, physical traps, cursed items as lures, what capabilities the owner might have or what friends and allies who'd hunt you down. And there are mundane and magical defences against that research, too -- spells that block or mislead divination magic, networks of observant people who'd notice strangers hanging around watching on corners and in shadows. Most shopkeepers aren't retired adventurers with who knows what tricks up their sleeves, but any given one always might be. The prevalence of wards and like protective magics in places housing any kind of wealth makes trespassing in buildings, invading other people's spaces, a tricky prospect -- nothing like a sure thing just because you can cast any given couple of 3rd-level spells. Unless they're superhumanly lucky, no mage foolhardy enough to regularly take such risks would make it to mid-level. |
