I think I am going to use a very powerful Giant as the BBEG in the end of my 3.5 campaign. My question: What Giants exist in Faerun? The basics (in the Monster Manual), I am 99.9% sure exist, but others, I am not so sure. I am asking because one of my players is real..."hardcore". He started an argument with me that disrupted and eventually ended my one and only Eberron campaign because of a dispute about (ironically) what types of Giants existed in the world. I don't want to go through that again especially at the end of my game.

Wow, you put up with that? I would have bounced his butt.

Indeed... if you can, I'd suggest picking up 2e's Giantcraft in .pdf, that should give you a good idea of the sorts of giants kicking around the Realms, with some details on some of the more obscure types you could work with.

Pretty much every kind of giant exists in the Forgotten Realms. If it is in D&D then there is usually a place for it in Faerûn.

The titans had disappeared circa -30,000 DR, as a nation, anyway, but they still could be found among the planes, and there might have been one or two titans running around somewhere, but aside from the titans, pretty much all the other giant types were represented.

Now, there were a few new types of giants introduced at the end of 3.5e that were so new they hadn't been mentioned in FR lore, but that doesn't mean that those types can't be found in the Realms, they just don't have an official mention yet.

Yes, EVERY kind of giant possible exists in FR, though some not in such large numbers (Titans, for instance, may be extinct).

Even Goliaths are canon, from some novel.

If you player thinks he "knows everything", can I play wih him for a day?

I love showing people exactly how little they know.

I'd also put laxative in his soda - that usually gets an unruly player away from your table pretty quick (and provides loads iof entertainmment for you and your other players).

Anyhow, this is one of the many threads I have read here on these boards that discuss players who know more then the DM about the Realms - or any setting for that matter.

The only person who knows YOUR setting is YOU - you do not run the canon setting, and I challenge your players to find their characters in any of the novels or sourcebooks if they say otherwise. Your realms is an alternate reality, as is everyone's - your player has no clue whats walking around YOUR world - only you do.

Also, see Giantcraft (sourcebook) and The Twilight Giants trilogy - there are many, MANY different kinds of giants in FR - I've even come across references to Mist Giants in the Silver Marches.

-Folding Steel Chair to the head. :D Works every time with an unruly ***. I do suggest looking at Giantcraft. Or use what ever giants you want, just don't use the NY Giants. ;)

NY Giants are the epitome of 'the underdog', sort of like Hill Giants that occssionally get one right. :D

Also some giantish lore in Brian's fairly recent Moonshaes article.

Goliaths: in Anauroch, in the North portion I believe, they stipulate some presence. I'd wager there are desert giants in the wastelands themselves too.

Frost Giants: generous amounts near Tholvare (way North, near the High Ice), many displacing Evermoors giants too under Gertie's reign. And, it's probably safe to assume, a Hell of alot near/in Icewind Dale.

Verbeegs: significant presence in the Moonshaes and Icewind Dale.

Fire Giants: the only one of note IIRC, was "Kurgoth Hellspawn", and even he was 1/2 fiendish. He sacked Myrimdra (drow), South of the Dalelands. Probably some near volcanic geographies; Chult, Thay maybe.

Trolls: ton of them in/around the Evermoors.

Ogres: everywhere really.

Dusk Giants (Heroes of Horror) I've been experimenting on/with Shadovar and/or Shaaran/shadow influences, namely Anauroch given where Shade is. Very nasty, very compelling.

-HERE is the Wikipedia list for D&D Giants. It has an extensive list, but I don't know if it's completely comprehensive or not. I am thinking no, but...

I think they left off both types of Wood Giant, and also those from the East (forget their names again).

Plus I can think of a few more, like those warped stone giants, and the undead ones, and the Giants in Grey, etc, etc...

Although those are most-likely all dirivations of the main races.

And Spelljammer Spacereach Giants (which were a total rip-off of the Thomas Covenant Seareach Giants). Don't know if any of them ever came to Toril... don't really care, either...

-Well, if so, that's totally redundant.

Well, they served a purpose, though.

Basically, they were a group of Stone (Space) Giants (yes, with hair) that somehow 'lost' their homeland. Their's is a tragic tale of ancient philosophers spending all their time on lonely asteroids contemplating the meaning of the universe.

They are normally found solo, but small family groups are possible (if the DM needs it for his plot). Basically, they are the all-pupose plothook:

You and your crew spot a small asteroid - say only a few hundred feet across, and sitting on it is a sad and lonely looking being of immense proportions (picture him in "The Thinker" position).

Now the DM can send the SJ players anywhere to do anything... the Giant wants to find his home, the giant figured out where the Elven Homeworld is and wishes to travel there, the giant has news of a lost civilization on a planet within the sphere, the giant has information the characters are seeking, etc, or the giant just says -

"The Princess... it was my job to protect her... and I failed... they took her, an left me stranded here.."

There you go - INSTANT Adventure!

Thats the purpose they served, and they served it well, and the 'hair' was just to differentiate them from the normal groundling Stone Giants.

-Even so, there was/is no reason to make them a separate subrace of Giants, as opposed to just being enlightened Stone Giants.

Well... they had HAIR...

Which is contradictory to my own theories - I think the more you 'worry', the more hair you lose, and these guys seem to me to be the ultimate 'worry worts'.

Anyhow, the idea is that they are found 'solo' (usually). 'Regular' Stone Giants can also be encountered in space, but the idea was to make these guys just a little different so players knew they weren't dealing with your typical stone Giant.

Why create a sub-race? Well, the same can be said for just about anything.

If Grey Orcs and Green (Mountain) Orcs can be different races, I can't see why Stone Giants can't have their own Sub-(sub?) group. After all, don't they already have at least one other 'sub-species' on Toril? Those Underdark versions? Isn't there also two versions of that sub-sub-race? Feral and non?

I may be getting confused with the Undead Stone Giants, which are a whole 'nother... race... hmmmm... can undead really be a 'race'...

But thats another question entirely...

Sure does... Eli looked terrible.

I hope the Cards go all the way.

Amusing that the only female in this thread mentioned the game this past week.

Giants in Faerun are kind of the beat upon race if I remember correctly... first with the dragons and then by the dwarves and what not. I think a type of Giant would be a great BBEG for a campaign.

Yup - Giants are like the 'Rodney Dangerfield' of the Realms.

They get no respect.
