Goliaths in the New Realms

Since we are now fairly sure goliaths are a part of the seconf Players Handbook coming in March, does anyone have any thoughts on them as a part of the new Realms. I know there is one book, Depths of Madness, that has a goliath in them. Was there anything else?

I actually liked the race at least more so then the raptorans and illumians.

The goliath was also my favourite race of the "Races of ..." series. And they were also the easiest to adapt. They tend to live in isolated mountain ranges. You could have them in the Spine of the World, the Dragonspire (sp?) Mts., the Galena Mts...

The only thing that did not satisfy me was the general concensus (not official rule, but was widely accepted) to make them worship Grumbar... Their religion, as portrayed in Races of Stone, didn't match very well with any god, contrary to the Raptorans with Akadi and the Illumians with Deneir.

Returned Abeir (even more so than the spellplague) can really be used as a catch-all gimmick to introduce things. Indeed I always felt that the Realms had a very underplayed presence of giants (especially considering that giant history in the realms is rather epic and lends itself to a varied number of ruins, cities and surviving nations all over the map). Goliaths would be pretty welcome if they are tied well to the lore.

With over 50 types of Giant races already available in FR (including several canon sub-species of Ogre), I have always felt the Goliaths were redundant and I have never used them, nor plan to.

Plus they're ugly.

-I don't think that the Eberron Campaign Setting necessarily has to be out for them to implement stuff like this. I believe Rich Baker has already stated that classes that do not exist currently will be mentioned in the FRCG, in preparation for when they are published.

I like the write-up for the Goliaths, but I would rather apply them to a race that already existed in FR before that splat book came out, like the Ice Spire Ogres - A bigger, stronger, SMARTER version of the common Ogre, living in the far north (above the Silver Marches, in Hartsvale).

So, yeah, the fluff was useful, but I'll use it and the stats with a different name and origin.

Anyhow, aren't the giants more elemental now? That was my understanding... so I think they would need to be tweaked a bit to fit 4e.

I don't recall that. I knw they had a blurb about adapting them into the Realms in races of stone

Where might I find this? I went through the whole Goliath section in RoS and couldn't find it - is it in another part of the book? I even checked all the MMs, but no Goliaths... although I did find a weird Stone Giant variant that had a 'in Faerûn' blurb - just what we needed, yet ANOTHER type of giant.

Is this comming from the guy that had an Orc as a Avatar?

Thanks for reminding me - it was about time to change back. :D

And my Avatar is quite 'fetching' compared to those Goliath pics.

Speaking of witch, I wa looking for a pic of an well groomed orc warrior.....

Here is a pic entitled 'Orc Paladin', but it could be used to define a civilized Orc Fighter -

Paladin of... Gruumsh?

This one is really good, but it's B&W -

Orc Fighter

Here's one with a little 'Celtic' Flavor -

Highlander Orc

And a 'Ranger-Type' with an Amerind feel -

Orc Huntress

And here is one I really like for an Orc scout - the pipe is a nice touch -

Orc Scout

How about an Orc as Conan (the hero!)

This One I'm including because it shows an Orc in a tavern, and it's just SUCH A COOL PAINTING!

Orc at an Arm-Wrestling contest

And something you don't see everyday

And just for LK, an 'Orc Princess' :D

A Vision of Lovliness

Except for some crappy WoW screenshots in Ogrimmar, I really couldn't find the perfect 'Armored Orc Fighter' in color.

excellent stuff

I did incorporate lot of new races to the realms, like changelings and shifters, and some from dragon magazines (few undead, fey, one plant, one construct), tough Illumians, Elan and Spellscales aren't a separate race

Shifters I like - they feel like they 'belong' in the Realms.

Changelings are a natural fit (the Unseen).

But I draw the line at Warforged. Don't get me wrong, I actually like them, but they belong in Eberron. If a player of mine wanted to run one in FR I wouldn't mind, and can think of at least four decent backstories off the top of my head... but I don't want a whole nation of them plopping down in the middle of Faerûn.

Like certain other setting's races did.

And to keep this on topic: this thread made me re-read the Goliath stuff in RoS, and it's really good... but I just think we already have enough 'Big' types in FR already, so if I used them, I would make them something else, like a Stone-Giant off-shoot.

I use to agree, and most likely will with some things. But for me both Warforged and Shifters can exist in any world, even in Forgotten Realms. They could easily be from Abeir, be warped from the Spellplague, be created in the past 100 years or have been from a fringe society that has managed to stay isolated until now.

For me Kalashtar are a race that I don't foresee myself migrating to other settings. Shifters and Warforged, not so much.
#55

markustay63

Jul 09, 2008 9:41:27
Shifters are the eventual evolution of true Lycanthropes - the ones born with it. They have become a seperate race, and do not carry the disease (IIRC). They are closer to Lythari in some ways - they are more feral, and are closer to nature.

I just think they are a good fit for the Realms - especially the Realms of 1479 - because they would make an interesting group of Selune-worshippers. The Warforged are too 'Steampunk' to fit well, but thFR has plenty of room for a furry, intelligent race that lives in remote regions.

I guess when I think of the Realms, I think of it as a much more 'primal' world then ours, and this sort of 'wild child' just seems like it would go well in some of the older forests of the North.

Now that I think about it... I can think of a few southern and eastern forests that would also work nicely...

Good question? They were developed using 3rd edition where lycanthropes spread their disease and didn't breed true. However they weren't published until 3.5 and so their distinction became significantly less (although unlike lycanthropes they can be any alignment). The canon reasoning in Eberron is that lycanthropes WERE contagious, but aren't now. Whereas Shifters were never contagious.

Personally I'd be inclined to run shifters as a societal group (like the difference between High Elves and Wild Elves) in a non-Eberron campaign.

-You had to get me started, didn't you?

-There are no such things as "Copper" Elves. This is a problematic retcon in RoF. Elves do not evolve, nor does interbreeding amonst other Elven subraces create a new subrace. For example, Sharlario Moonflower was the only Moon Elf among the survivors of Tintageer. He bred amonst Sun Elves, and yet, his children became Moon Elves, not some kind of Moon-Sun Elf hybrids. So, to say that Wood Elves are Sun-Moon-"Wild" Elf hybrids is impossible.

-"Wild" Elves and Wood Elves are the same thing. Would you consider an aboriginal indian living in the Amazon a different species from you? No, they aren't. Thus, societal factors- such as being savage or not- is no indicator of race/liniage.

-Eh, if those are the major differences, I don't really think they deserve their own race. In my opinion, it'd make more sense just to say "X lycanthropes in Y setting are/aren't contagious".

Agreed. Although a lot of speculation has it that the PHB2 will have shifters. Personally, unless they come up with a better story for them in the PHB2, I'll use them as simply a lycanthrope race (whether they appear in the PHB2 or the Player's Guide to Eberron) outside of my Eberron campaigns.

However we don't have 753 lycan related races unlike elves in FR. were the "copper elves"(It doesn't matter if is a recton or not the bottom line is that they ARE there) is redundant with wild elves (for the reason you name above), the lycan is a desent race (as in non-redundant) with no LA with a good posible background they can do great in FR.

where can one find lore on dwelves?

According to Candlekeep:
* Dwarves Deep (AD&D 2nd Ed source book)
* Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves
* Mintiper's Chapbook - Part 5: Myth Glaurach

-There are nine Elven subraces: Sun, Moon, Star, "Wild", Wood, Avariel, Lythari, Drow, Aquatic.

Meh, close enough.....

-People from other places may be silly looking, and smelly, and hairy, and talk funny, but they are still people too. :P

She's short (4'10") and just build and she doesn't even work out, she runs slow but he can run forever... she's pretty and she lack the beard but other than that, she's a dwarf :D

-But, again, I don't know enough about the race, the Shifters, so everything I say should be taken with an asterisk.

that's cool, I was just saying that they could fit somewhere like the Endless Wastes or The Great Wild Woods, I rather use then than Wemics ...

-Now I know what they look like. Don't look very Lycanthropic, though. They seem more misanthropic than Lycanthropic.

Actually, that second pic is sorta how I picture Lythari to look - especially the one to the right.

I'm thinking in this new, crazy '4e world'. Lythari might become FR's Shifters. It would be easy enough - use the shifter crunch and just take the FR name (and fluff) for them in FR.

I know that probaly rubs you the wrong way, but it would make perfect sense - only the rules have to match, the fluff and local names don't.

And shifters are NOT Lycanthropes - they have no 'disease' they can pass on - they are their own race, which should suit you much better then 4e rolling Lythari into were-creatures (which would be awful).

I don't know bout that one....

He's correct - the OFFICIAL rule is that if something ISN'T mentioned, it still exists.

These days, we have to worry about weather something exists if it IS mentioned. ;)

And since this has turned into a "What else is going to get dumped on the Realms" thread, I was thinking about the Warforged. RB has said they aren't going to be in the Realms, but he's not exactly 100% in the FR loop, and has been wrong before.

I was thinking that the Eberron campaign started after a hundred years of misery (war) and wound up with the Mournlands and Warforged as a result of that. Since we already have the Mournland (Changing Lands) and Dragonmarks (Spellscars), why wouldn't we be getting the Warforged? After all, someone could have created them as 'living weapons' during that century of strife.

And then I was thinking, if a Warforged got Lycanthropy, would he become a Transfomer?

I think there's "more then meets the eye" here. ;)

Where are the little girl's parents? Did those robots steal her? Is she an orphan, and if so, how did they get custody?

Also, It seems to me that they wind-up destroying half the city whenever they try to help.

Well, in what litttle background I have done for K-T, I came up with that the Oni (Demons) bred with Ogres and created the Ogre-Magi race.

There is even some lore in that regard - superior (Tiefling) Ogres are called Wang-Liang (from the 2e MC). One of the few regions I have actually worked on thus far is the Chukei Plateau, where an ancient Ogre Kingdom used to exist (non-canon), and I had placed the Ogre-Magi as originating from there.

Just one more thing 4e F-uped that I have to go back and change now.

Oni also had three sub-races, but I guess now they don't.

Wayne Reynold's work on Eberron is pretty much one of the best things on that setting as well. FR really needs a distinctive art style, it has largely lacked an artistic identity in 3E which can contibute a lot to the mood of a setting. -Being as that the Forgotten Realms (along with Greyhawk and Dragonlance) are "stereotypical" fantasy, I don't think there really should be a "unique", "identifiable" art style to go with it. Maybe it's a security setting - I made them smaller and took out the backgrounds, is all, and then re-posted them on Photobucket (which I'm assuming is okay with WotC, since you can view them here for free).

Spiderwick and Potter are both loved by my wife, so I don't really see a reason why they should be mutually exclusive in terms of appeal. :P

As to the Goliaths, first pic is much more what I have in mind when I think of them.

I love the pic of the goliath bard (dawncaller) in RoS. I love the Mualio Lonehunter pic, very evocative. Their gods are also interesting. The goliath liberator pic is also great.

Yes, I'm aware there are no Artificers in Faerun, officially anyway, though I hope we start seeing some. They're an interesting class I think... kinda like the combat engineer of roleplaying.

As to Gnome Artificers, they weren't really that great, unless you used a few of the modifications KtM suggested for them and their creations. Speaking of which, I wonder where I put those notes I had on them... haven't seen those in a while.

Gnome artificers great idea horrible executions (it had good concepts but very poor balance and became completely useless at later levels). The artificer class as it seems to be shaping currently for 4E seems quite interesting for gnomes and lantanese though.

Or KtM for that matter. And Evokers Are the Combat engineers or roleplaying. ask any Combat Engineer what they do for a living and they'll give you just one universal answer...BLOW SH*T UP!!! :P

I thought Orcs were Human's 'dark counterpart?

Not in Tolkien (Elves and Orcs were), but in FR/D&D we have the Drow as Elves 'evil opposite', so that leaves Orcs up for grabs.

Think about it - Orcs are, for all intense and purposes, primitive barbarian humans. perhaps early humans didn't have tusks, but they did have more pronounced canine teeth, so Orcs are what Neanderthal would have looked like had he survived.

Besides, we also have Shades now, because not only does everything have to have an opposite, but in 4e it also has to have a 'Shadow Version'.

Jul 17, 2008 22:16:05

Neanderthals were SMALL... NOT seven friggin' feet tall!!!

If you are going to create a purely 'fantasy' race, then you should at least give it a different name then a real-world creature!

They have the same exact thing in WoW, but the guys at Blizzard were smart enough to not disagree with science by calling them Neanderthals!

-Yeah, that happens in fantasy, from time to time. I'll admit, in my own setting that was something that I hadn't considered. In the past, an entire continent was shattered using Human War Magic and Elven High Magic. On the map, the area where the continent was is a mess of jumbled islands, big and small, but I never took into account in my history the impact that would have had on the coast to the east that was about 200 miles away.
