I really want to brush up on some FR lore and would like suggestions as to what novels I could pick up and read to learn some. I'm not interested in stuff that's 4E or leading up to it, however.

Thank you kindly.

-Depends on what you are looking for. You can check out this very limited and incomplete Forgotten Realms Novel Topic Index to get a general idea of certain things, though.

Yeah there are a lot of novels in diffrent places of fearun.
Some are better, some are not but unfortunatly many have a lot of inconsistencies between each other.

So just reading for lore u will get a lot of information but when you want to read good stories you will be disappointed sometimes (except you stay with one author).

One of the best for backround information is the Last Mythal series. Even if it has one of the worst character endings I've ever read.

Blackstaff gives you glimpses at older styles and life on faerun.

I like Return of the Archmage as well for you Ancient Human civilizations.

Waterdeep is a good if not tedious read for lore on Waterdeep as a city.

I'll continue to look for more as I'm sure there are but if you have something specific it would be nice.

Thank you very much all. Phelf, that was just the kind of thing I'm looking for. Think I'll see if Mythal series books are at some near by book stores.

Evermeet is a book that can't be matched for elven lore. It starts from the elves' early days and ends in the (relative) present (at least if you disregard 4e lore :D).

Start with the Avatar trilogy, then Prince of Lies. Move on from there.

I like the Harper series as they each take place all over Faerun and delve into different cultures as well as many different cities. And all of the novels in the series are open ended and take place pre 4e I think maybe even pre 3.5e.

Waterdeep is a good if not tedious read for lore on Waterdeep as a city.

The best for this is by far City of Splendors: A Waterdeep Novel.
Start with the Avatar trilogy, then Prince of Lies. Move on from there.

The Avatar trilogy will tell you what happened in the Avatar Crisis, in conjunction with the Forgotten Realms Atlas timeline and the Shadow of the Avatar series (Ed's books are of course the greatest Realmslore troves), but it's highly inaccurate for anything else.

But it sets a stage and creates an interesting intro to the Realms.

It's what drew me to them.

I agree. One of the best Realms novels I have ever read. Good stuff.
