For as long as the caster concentrates on the spell, or until the spells duration ends, the corpse is treated as a zombie under the caster's control. This spell will not work on a creature with more hd than the casters caster level. In addition, the caster must remain within 30ft of the zombie, and keep line of sight at all times. The corpse is treated as a zombie of the appropriate type, and loses all special and supernatural abilities of the base creature. If the corpse is destroyed, it cannot be animated again. If it is damaged, it retains the damage acquired on successive castings. The zombie acts immediatley after the caster. Only corpses that are eligible to acquire the zombie template may be targeted by this spell (No oozes, incorporeal, creatures with over 10 hd, etc..). Focus: a spool of black thread, covered in ash. This is a spell idea I've had for cult of the dragon necromancers. My initial opinion is that it's pretty balanced, as the Necromancer is giving actions to have a zombie under his control. For them it is kind of a handy spell, as they can animate dragon corpses without actually "animating them". great for tidying up the lair, lol. |

Animate Dead is a 4th Level Wizard spell, and allows you to only control 4 HD x Level of Undead. Make this spell 3rd Level, or 2nd Level, and create a cap to the max size, maybe, that the Undead can be, and there you go, all fixed. I think, anyway. |

Perhaps with a penalty to the actions of the caster it would be balanced requiring concentration for example. |

As for limits, it does say that it cannot have more hd than his CL. So a first lvl wizard could only have a one hd zombie. Perhaps I should add in some language clarifying that the corpse must be legal to make a zombie out of... (aka...hd limits, no oozes, etc..). I was shooting for a early level version of animate dead, and this is what I came up with. Temporary, short range, and requires the caster's direct control, and they only get one at a time. Still...it probably should be a 2nd lvl spell. |
