Help ID'ing a map

May 30, 2008 11:24:38 Hi all. I have an FR map that I got from a friend a while back. It's big and has lots of areas on it, but I have no idea of its provenance, and its style is neither stereotypical 2e or 3e. Since I'm an archivist, that bugs me. So, with a little help from the kind people of this board, I converted it to a manageable size and posted it to an image hosting site. I'd appreciate it if people here could take a look at it and, if you recognize it, tell me what edition it's from, and where it might have come from.

May 30, 2008 13:00:55 Looks like the map of Faerun that appeared in the Forgotten Realms Atlas for 2e to me. Only one I've ever seen that used that style of map anyway.

I'd say 2E, if only because Impresk Lake is right next to the Snowflake mountains. The Lake's location got shifted upward when the 3E map got "editted", therefore putting the realm of Erlkazar in limbo.

Basically, it was a book made by compiling together all of the stories from the first bunch of FR book series: Moonshae Series, Wyvern Spur Series, Darkelf Series, Crystal Shard series, etc...

Not a bad book. A very nostalgic map. I appreciate it. Always nice to add another file to my FR resources.

That, my friend, is the Forgotten Realms map, as found in The Forgotten Realms Atlas, published 1990 by TSR.

Basically, it was a book made by compiling together all of the stories from the first bunch of FR book series: Moonshae Series, Wyvern Spur Series, Darkelf Series, Crystal Shard series, etc...

Not a bad book. A very nostalgic map. I appreciate it. Always nice to add another file to my FR resources.

Yeah. I have that book buried somewhere. Good maps for Kara-Tur if memory serves

Does that mean you're going to unbury it and give us an official "Yes, it's in this book," type of answer? Or, are you like me, with two tons of books stacked on top of it in a heap and don't plan on checking until you next decide to move? ;)

Wouldn't worry about it. I rule in your favor and consider the case dismissed.

Now, how much this map has changed will be another question....

May 31, 2008 15:31:24 Yes, that is a composite made up of all the individual maps in the Atlas. It was an incredible piece of work by some dedicated fan.

Note that he/she did not want to damage their original book, so they did NOT take it apart for scanning, which leads to small sections missing wherever the map was joined with adjacent sections.

It is still an EXCELLENT resource, and I use it all the time. Anyone who can get their hands on an original copy wil not be disappointed - their are dozens of smaller maps of towns, cities, building interiors - its well worth whatever you pay for it.

Its the last map I go to, BTW, when I'm double-checking locales on my 2e/3e blends. It still has many more settlements then any other map ever done for FR.

The artist, Karen Wynn Fonstad, has since sadly passed away, but she is also known for the equally excellent Atlas of Dragonlance, as well as Atlases for several other popular novel series.

The atlas also has the only 'polar projection' of Toril that I know of - the whole thing really is a work of art.
