Or they would feel insulted if someone calls one of then as an elf, or dark elf? What is the meaning of the drow word, and do they call themselfs as that? What is the word they use in elf language? Thanks. |

| #4sfdragonOct 26, 2011 22:27:52 | Lost empires has the drow comment ot there is the wiki |
| #5satanicwayOct 26, 2011 22:56:59 | This wiki you pointed just leaves me with the impression that the word "Drow" isnt what they call themselfs, since it comes from the word betrayers, and the drows thinks that they were the right ones, and that corellon and the other elfs needs to pay for what they did. No prideful people like the drows would accept being called "betrayers". It seems that this is the name given to them by the high elfs and by the humans distortion of the elvish word for betrayers. And no prideful race would accept the name another lesser race gave to them. (in their own view of course...) Lost empires of faerun have more information on this? |

Delicate touchy answer - perhaps like how the afro-american culture reappropriated the word 'n*****', as a form of ironic pride? Turning a slur into pride, like a finger to the 'other side'? |
| #7satanicwayOct 27, 2011 0:47:09 | I think thats a core difference. Afro-americans are inside the society that were hostile to them, but Drows arent. They live distant, they are not fighting for the respect of theyr society, but they are building theyr own society. Thats why i find its unlikely that this happens with Drows. But your point is really important and valid to think about this question. |
| #8the_ubbergeekOct 27, 2011 0:57:46 | I think thats a core difference. Who say the drow are far? They can be under your feet ;) And they entered EVERMEET... Don't forget the religious side of lolthite orthodxy; the whole deal may have been spinned rather.. positively or less badly... A sort of noble exile from 'cowardly weak fools', 'they are the ones who betrayed US' etc... and you can imagine why the name, 'Drow', became oddly pridefull... at start ironic. |

This is quite in contrast with real world experience, where a number of group names were adopted despite/because of another group imposing it and its meaning being scornful. "Yankee" is the immediate example. And the drow pride themselves on their ability to betray and backstab. Of course they deem the victim guilty of whatever sin fits the situation, but they enter the aliance with the intent of punishing their partner[s] for their crimes. The aliance is merely to punish more serious "criminals" first. We would likely find that the drow definition of "betray" is more on the line of "inflict punishment". |

IIRC, before the crown wars, the dark elves were known as Ssri'Tel-Quessir. At the time of the banishment, the Ssri'Tel-Quessir were cast out of Corellon's light and at this time becamse N'Tel-Quessir. As to the original question, in all the books I've read, they refer to themselves as drow. |
