Do most people travel by horse on land? I'd guess so since most people can't afford to hire a mage to teleport them. It used to take 3 months to get to New York to California that way in the 1800's before trains, just think how long it would take, say to get from the sea of fallen stars to Waterdeep that way, like a year?
As for the continent - the main continent (including Kara-Tur) is about the same size as the Eurasian one.
Although the map keys (and sizes) have changed from edition to edition - I really should measure the size of the continent on my world map end-to-end just to see how it shapes-up in 3e.

No, but I finally added the outline of Osse to the map.
Its doesn't sound like much of a big deal, but you try tracing a continent with a 3-pixel brush!

I was even thinking about starting Maztica today... and then I slapped myself and said "Self... you need to finish one of 10,000 other projects first".
Sometimes I need to let 'Self' know who's boss. :P
Still, I 'immerse' myself in each area I do - I don't just copy from old maps - I read every source I can find about each and every object I place, to make sure it's in the perfect spot.
What that means is I actually spend more time researching stuff then actual mapping - which is really what makes it so much fun for me - I'm always discovering cool new stuff in every place I visit.
And you don't always find stuff in the appropriate spot - George krashos pointed me in the direction of a ruined city in Murghôm... that was mentioned in Dwarves Deep! Or all those now-gone locales named in Prayers from the Faithful and Pages from the Mages - it really becomes a community project when people point me to new, interesting stuff.

As long as you are not starting to talk about yourself in the third person past tense, all things should be allright. :P
Besides do you plan to make also a more detailed map of the whole Underdark fo the Realms? That's what I am sometimes looking for and it could be helpfull, because there are certainly more interesting spots down there, than the maps in Underdark and the other newer sourcebooks show.
If I ever decide to learn some 3D modeling, I may be tempted to create a 3D map of it - it's really the only way to get it right.
Two cities that appear right next to each other on a flat map could be further away then two cites on opposite ends of the map - without that third dimension you are losing all perspective.

Its surprisingly simple to figure out how big Fareun is? Simply take all the maps at the beginning of each novel that has them and tape them together edge to edge.
Or if some FR fan could tell me what product it is. Come on, some of you must be clerics of Oghma who could help me

Seriously though shouldn't a complete map with legends and all(including the one inch=one mile scale) be in AGhotr?
