| #1mister_mxyztplkJul 03, 2008 16:16:40 | Even with the weave destroyed, does the death of Mystra leave the post of deity of magic open? Since magic still exists, doesn't it remain an available portfolio? |
| #2nymrohdJul 03, 2008 16:20:19 | 4E does not exactly care about portfolios tbh. Plus there are quite a few other deities that had the portfolio of magic. Corellon and Thoth to name a few (Isis and Set as well but more specific portfolios). |
| #3StiggerJul 03, 2008 16:20:26 | Presumably so... not the Weave of course, but magic itself should still be a perfectly viable portfolio. I do seem to recall that nothing official was going to fill that spot though, at least according to Mr. Baker (presuming my memory isn't faulty on that point). |

Mr. Baker owns the option to purchase that portfolio at a later date. That's the real reason why he killed off Mystra. I hear he also has loads of platinum pieces hidden in an offshore Sembian bank account. ;) |

| #6markustay63Jul 03, 2008 17:54:57 | Well... that was... special. ![]() Mr. Baker owns the option to purchase that portfolio at a later date. That's the real reason why he killed off Mystra. I hear he also has loads of platinum pieces hidden in an offshore Sembian bank account. ;) Ummmm... NO... RB had very little to do with the majority of changes - he's not even on the FR team this time out. In fact, from what I gather from what little he has let slip, he has been fighting a losing battle to keep some things intact... You want to paint a target on someone, place Chris Perkins in your Crosshairs. He's the one that will go down in history as "the man who destroyed FR". Even though others contributed, he was IN CHARGE, and the blame for EVERYTHING falls squarely on HIS shoulders. |
| #7TheriseJul 03, 2008 18:15:58 | Even with the weave destroyed, does the death of Mystra leave the post of deity of magic open? Since magic still exists, doesn't it remain an available portfolio? It might be an "open" portfolio, but the designers have explicitly stated that there will be no god or goddess of magic for the 4E Realms. Ostensibly, the "reason" given is that Shar is somehow preventing the rise of a new deity of magic, but how she is doing so has not yet been revealed. |
| #8nymrohdJul 03, 2008 18:32:39 | Honestly the position of a deity of magic and the weave has primarily caused Toril a lot of grief. Why would any god agree to the ascension of a deity that could potentially cut of his link to his followers entirely (strictures provided by AO notwithstanding). I think none of the gods are enthusiastic about someone having control of such a powerful portfolio, and now that the position is open, they will see it remain so forever. |
| #9TheriseJul 03, 2008 18:55:32 | You know, I never really bought into the whole argument that the designers had, saying that Mystra was THE most powerful goddess and that she had the most powerful portfolio. It just didn't ring true for me. Ask yourself if the same argument would apply to Boccob of Greyhawk (although I guess he's axed from the new core "setting" as well, such as it is). It just wouldn't. Authors wrote the most stories and novels involving Mystra and her Chosen. They did so because she was popular and sold well. That's why she seemed to be the most powerful, because she was the one most often featured. But that's not the fault of DMs, it's the result of popularity and sales. So what do they do, ramp up Cyric (who is just a stupidly conceived deity, come on) and Shar (and face it, nihilism is boring) so that they are even more powerful and well-seen than Mystra. Again, that's the novelists... who are also the designers. Maybe they should have just lessened up on publishing novels with Mystra and the Chosen, and tried out writing stories that involved some of the other deities. Some of the really interesting ones, like Talos or Malar. Then they could have examined the customer reception of such. But hey, what do I know? |
| #10nymrohdJul 03, 2008 18:58:32 | The actual rules printed in 3E affirm what I say. And Mystra and Boccob have a huge difference. Boccob does not have the Weave. |
| #11TheriseJul 03, 2008 18:59:40 | The actual rules printed in 3E affirm what I say. And Mystra and Boccob have a huge difference. Boccob does not have the Weave. He governs all magic, same thing. |
| #12lord_karsusJul 03, 2008 19:12:29 | -You know, I can't help but like the title...I was Mystra. Well, Mystryl. ;) |
| #13nymrohdJul 03, 2008 19:13:36 | He governs all magic, same thing. Well by the RAW however horrible it may be, both Boccob and Mystra were statted. Mystra could Deny Weave. Boccob had nothing similar. |
| #14TheriseJul 03, 2008 19:17:15 | Well by the RAW however horrible it may be, both Boccob and Mystra were statted. Mystra could Deny Weave. Boccob had nothing similar. According to Ao, that is. And an element introduced in 2E but absent from 1E. Again, a designer issue not a DM issue. |
| #15lord_karsusJul 07, 2008 20:55:19 | Mystra could Deny Weave. Boccob had nothing similar. -Boccob doesn't have a Weave to deny others access to, to begin with. |
| #16fire_wraithJul 07, 2008 21:28:00 | You can, in fact. After all, there's no more Mystra to deny you access to nice ultra-high level spells like Karsus's Avatar. I wanna be like Karsus! :evillaugh |
| #1718DELTAJul 07, 2008 21:32:36 | -You got to love it when Eberron Designers are working on the Fourgotten Realms. This post had nothing to do with the topic at hand. -Felt like 'thread crapping' as someone says. All because I am not drinking the WotC 4E Kewl-Aid. ![]() 18DELTA ![]() |

| #19fire_wraithJul 07, 2008 21:42:30 | -Everyone says that...There are ways, you know, that this can be done... Indeed... the only question is, though, which God or Goddess? Mystra is out, of course. So which deity's divinity would you steal? What Would Karsus Do? :D |
| #20lord_karsusJul 07, 2008 21:46:29 | -Azuth. He's the next best thing. -Though, since Mystra is dead, the portfolio of 'Magic' is free for the taking, so... |
| #21markustay63Jul 07, 2008 22:03:59 | My vote goes out for Isis - "Oh mighty Isis!" Anyway, she's female, she already has part of the magic portfolio, and she looks great in a skirt. :P We can just call her Mysis in 4e. ![]() |
| #22fire_wraithJul 07, 2008 22:06:44 | ...so it's free for the taking. Of course, attempting to best Karsus at his own game would likely rank only slightly behind 'Getting involved in a land war in Asi- er, Kara-tur'. :D |

I think none of the gods are enthusiastic about someone having control of such a powerful portfolio, and now that the position is open, they will see it remain so forever. How bout Death, Hate, Love or Greed etc....? Those are at least 4 porfolios that I see more powerful than Magic. The real power is not the magic, is the emotion behind the magic. Much like when our troops went to Afganistan, BOOM is less than a month we took over. Now... |

He put on women's clothing, and hung around in bars. ![]() In all seriousness though, this thread does bring to mind a more pertinent question... just what exactly would stop a powerful wizard, in 4E, from trying to achieve divinity via the casting of Karsus' Avatar? Obviously our hypothetical wizard would have to choose a different deity, but that in itself is a potential benefit, as that god/goddess would not possess the inherent ability to stop the wizard by turning off all magic (even at the point of destroying themselves in the process). I suppose we would just have to rely on the self-restraint of powerful wizards, and willingness to hold off on the pursuit of unfettered power. ![]() |
| #44TheriseJul 09, 2008 10:42:05 | He put on women's clothing, and hung around in bars. Apologies to Karsus for what I'm about to do... Does He Wear a Dress? *giggle* :D |

He doesn't have any novels attributed to him specifically. He was the 'Design Manager' for numerous 3.5e era books, including many Forgotten Realms ones. |
| #55valeshdemonJul 09, 2008 17:42:54 | I think something earlier mentioned was about the "portfolio". Mystra was the only one with the Magic "portfolio", but not the only one with the magic "domain". I could have mis-read, but I think people are getting the concept of domain and portfolio. |

Deities in other pantheons have control of the portfolio as well. |

Being as that she is not in the "Faerûnian Pantheon", and is instead in the Mulhorandi Pantheon, there is no clash of "interests", and as such, she can have the 'Magic' portfolio, no problem. |
