Oct 16, 2007 11:11:46 Hi there everyone. I've been making some cool (hopefully) adventures for my group and decided to make a slightly different villain. This one is an intelligent sword!! It' 2 in the morning where I am, so doubtless there will be a lot that doesn't make sense, but I though I'd post it anyway before the light of dawn makes me realise what a horrible idea this really is...

In the Couatl-Rakshasas war a great demon-lord was imprisoned in a specially crafted blade by a warrior in the service of the Couatls. For a hundred millennia the demon raged against his bonds to no avail. Time and the solitary confinement took their toll on the shackled rakshasas. His memories slowly erases so long was he imprisoned in the blood-red shard in the sword's hilt. His allies and enemies were long faded into the past, his purpose and even his name a hazy memory beyond recall. All he knew now was rage, incandescent hate against those who imprisoned him. Eventually even his hate was quenched, the burning rage smoldered into nothing. At long last his surrender at last granted him a measure of freedom. So tightly is he bound to the sword by ancient enchantments that it is unlikely he will ever be free, not that he wants to. He is now part of the sword, and the sword part of him.

The sword awoke to find himself buried in the chest of a dying victim. Some mortal fool had looted him from an ancient sepulcher and wielded him as a weapon in some puny conflict men called 'the Last War'. That was fine by him, for he loved the taste of blood. And what mortal would not want to use such a fine weapon as him? Clearly he was the best with his fine adamant blade and intricate craftsmanship. For a time he was content to watch as his 'owner' made a great name for himself, becoming a general of Karrnath in no small part due to the demon-sword.

His owner's good fortune was not to continue. After some time a mighty paladin of the Silver Flame slew his owner and took the blade for her own. The sword was not impressed. Though it could not remember why, it sensed a power within this woman that was distasteful. No longer did he feast on the blood of the living so often, now he spent most of his time sheathed. Not content to stay in such a state the sword whispered his sweet words into the ears of his mistress.

Perhaps this would have been ignored in more sane times, but with the Last War raging she did not have time to worry about a nagging feeling of guilt at what seemed her own thoughts. These were villains she was fighting, was a paladin not meant to feel rage when striking down evil? Slowly, step by step the paladin turned down the dark path....

The Rakshasas Blade: +5 Adamantine Bastard Sword of Wounding; AL CE; Int 16, Wis 16, Cha 10; Empathy, Hearing, vision, darkvision and blindsense 30 ft; Ego score 17.
Lesser Powers: Deathwatch continually active. Chill touch 3/day.
Greater Powers: Vampiric Touch 3/day.

This blade looks like a bastard sword of strange design seems to be made of adamantium. Intricate carvings in the dragoninc language seem to be etched on the blade, though what they mean is not apparent. A large, smooth Kyber shard is set in the hilt. A knowledge(arcana) check DC 30 would reveal that the runes are some form of binding or imprisonment spell, though the draconic script is of such an ancient form that it's hard to be sure.

The Rakshasas Blade is arrogant, evil and quite insane. It does not really aknowledge that mortals are any more than smart monkeys. Lesser beings are really quite beneath it's notice, other than it's wielder of course.

Well there we have my bad guy. I'm still thinking of ideas, but I thought I'd throw that out there and see what you all thought. I'm sorta hopinh that the paladin NPC who gets the sword (the PC's superior officer) will become a Blackguard. The PC's might be able to redeem her... if they're really good.

Yoink away! Also I'd very much like to hear about any twists you put on the situation, that I may steal them. I'm REALLY bad at naming swords, people, places etc, so if anyone can think of a cool name for the blade, name away!

You wanna blow the minds of the PC's? Have it's name written in CELESTIAL. They'll think "OH IT'S NAME IS OF LIGHT AND PURITY! IT MUST BE GOOD!" and then the truth's revealed and it's all WHAAAAAAAAT!?

Nov 01, 2007 22:16:51 I'm liking some of the ideas I'm seeing. Perhaps if the sword is shiny mithril (with a Kyber shard in the pommel) With runes on the blade in celestial it might fool the players. I was also thinking the wielder's eyes become tiger eyes while being controlled by the bound demon.

Nov 06, 2007 11:30:29 I'm diong something similar in my campaign actually, though the sword will be in posession of a PC. The only problem I have is the sword's agenda. Is simply bathing in blood enough? Helping it's owner get power perhaps?

Maybe get back to its creator eventually? Or kill its creator?

I haven't used intelligent weapons yet, but the idea is definately more intriguing now that I've read this.

Feb 25, 2008 15:05:36 Just a few ideas - but for one I think that maybe the swords stats should be higher, like at least a 19 for both Cha and Int, but have it's Wis be lower than 10 so that it being insane is more plausible.

Also, what if the whole blade was a single Khyber dragonshard with runes carved upon it in cold iron that read something like Prison of Dark Soul, but in the current translation and because of the intricate scrollwork, it looks like it reads Dark Soul Binder. The hilt and crossguard could also be forged from cold iron as well. The dragonshard blade would seeth the shifting lights and such when used, but because of the runes and such along its length, one could not read the draconic runes that would swirl in its depths that would be the spell of binding used on the being in the blade.

There is no reason that the sword shouldn't share it's rage with it's owner. Or even better treat it as Frenzy from the frenzied berserker class, forcing the user to attack something, although if you do this I'd consider lowering the enhancement bonus to +4 or +3.

I also like the idea of giving it a misleading name. Maybe even something with dual meaning such as "Demonslayer", suggesting that it is used to slay demons OR that maybe that it is a demon that slays.

So, have it guide its wielder to unlock its power; any intelligent weapon would want that, and if it was made by the couatl then the PC's are almost honor bound to make it as powerful as possible...
