| #1babrarkOct 23, 2008 22:12:09 | This is going to be a Living Forgotten Realms character, and my background is Cormyr. I am going to be a human cleric of Kelemvor, and I would like advice on my characters' personal background. He might have had a near-death experience, or have actually died at some point, but was brought back to life in order to complete his destiny. He might have a family member that died, and he prayed to Kelemvor. I am having a hard time finding ideas on what inspired his faith, but now he is a crusader of his faith. If someone is sick or dying, if he can heal them then he will, but if there is nothing to be done, he relives their suffering as best he can. He offers comfort to the bereaved, and protects the dead from the curse of undead. He also seeks out those who raise the dead and bind their souls. Spending an eternity chained to a body that no longer fits you, while you long to pass on to the afterlife is a horror beyond belief. To subject someone to that, and deny them the right to face Kelemvor and state their case to him is a perversion of the natural cycle of death. Those who practice binding souls against their will will face his wrath as he sends them before Kelemvor. |

The book notes that in the Storm Horns, there is a small mining community (pop. 1000 or so) called Skull Crag which hosts an, “...awe inspiring shrine to Kelemvor,” that the local miners pray to. Perhaps the source of inspiration for your new character was the sight of holy priests of Kelemvor defending Skull Crag from an orc raiding party that was supplemented by an orc shaman who could quickly raise both fallen orcs and fallen human defenders alike as undead zombies, all of which were turned right back into the battle against Skull Crag. The grit and zeal displayed by the Kelemvorites in defending against the horror of undead townspeople attacking their former friends and family (perhaps even people your character knew when they were alive), as well as their practical and spiritual guidance after the battle in assisting the townspeople to properly bury all their dead and perform rituals to make certain the souls of those the orc shaman sullied with his vile magic are no longer under the orc’s control, could be something that so moved your character’s own heart that it inspired him to join the ranks of Kelemvor’s faithful at Skull Crag so as to practice the same dual arts of battling undead and showing kindness to the living and recently fallen. Good luck to you! |

Being around that much suffering & death at a young age would surely cause him to fixate on it enough to be drawn to Kelemvor's faith later on in life. Helping others make the transition from life to death would simply come naturally to him, & if one or two of those dead villagers happened to rise again as undead... well, there's a good source for his hatred for undeath, right there. |

This is almost exatly the history of one of my players. His prototype history anyway because its subject to change before we start our game of course. He was born in a small town near Suzail and the village was wiped out by Goblins from the Stonecliffs. The little boy was one of the only survivors. He was taken to Suzail and raised in an orphanage but was fixated on death because of all of the tramatic stuff he saw as a kid. |
