| #1myfaeiaJun 05, 2008 17:40:59 | I will be DMing for my first time soon & I'm in need of some advice, would you be willing to help me with some advice on running the Forgotten Realms campaign? |
| #2JudgeDookieJun 05, 2008 17:42:09 | I will be DMing for my first time soon & I'm in need of some advice, would you be willing to help me with some advice on running the Forgotten Realms campaign? Many here are more than willing to help. Ask your questions. |
| #3rinonalyrna_fathomlinJun 05, 2008 18:38:49 | Which edition of the game do you plan to use? This question is important, because in August the 4E version of the setting will be released, and it is very different from the Realms of previous editions. Also, it's always helpful to give us specific questions. What kind of advice are you looking for in particular? |
| #4lord_karsusJun 05, 2008 19:29:17 | -As Rino said, what exactly are you looking for help with? -For a general "I need some advice on running the Forgotten Realms campaign", all there really is is to remember that you are the DM, it's your game, so do what you want to do, and that the Forgotten Realms are a big place, with very cool people and places, but don't forget that the game is centered around your players, and not these specific people and places. -All of that is general for any D&D game, though. |
| #5JudgeDookieJun 05, 2008 19:40:45 | I think the general question was would we be willing to help. He/she is asking this prior to asking any direct questions as he/she may wish to avoid being perceived as novice, uninformed, or, seemingly foolish. Even out of bounds. At this point, we wait for more info on what is being run and what they would like to do with it. |
| #6merrikcaleJun 06, 2008 6:58:09 | He/she is asking this prior to asking any direct questions as he/she may wish to avoid being perceived as novice, uninformed, or, seemingly foolish. oh. Well, good luck with that. :evillaugh Seriously, we're pretty good here. Ask away |
| #7lord_karsusJun 06, 2008 8:44:56 | -We're pretty good here? But...I'm afraid this forum is actually worthless for anyone who wants to intelligently discuss running an FR campaign. -Guess that doesn't exactly hit the mark, then... ![]() |
| #8JudgeDookieJun 06, 2008 9:33:36 | -Guess that doesn't exactly hit the mark, then... I'm bringing in the gavel. The statement does not apply to the matter of this thread, Mr. Karsus. ![]() As it was discussed, concerning a matter of 4e, it is therefore irrelevant to the case at hand. If you continue such line of prosecution, I will hold you in contempt. Again. ![]() |
| #9StiggerJun 06, 2008 10:11:26 | Well, presuming that the OP is just starting a campaign, it would make sense that 4e rules could very well be used, so it has a certain relevancy... Although I'll agree that it was a somewhat uncalled for cheap shot on LK's part. |
| #10JudgeDookieJun 06, 2008 10:19:35 | Well, presuming that the OP is just starting a campaign, it would make sense that 4e rules could very well be used, so it has a certain relevancy... Although I'll agree that it was a somewhat uncalled for cheap shot on LK's part. The case has not yet been laid out before the court. Therefore, all matters are irrelevant at this point. And To11's example is circumstantial at best. Besides, aren't you supposed to be willingly sacrificing yourself for the good of all some place? ![]() |
| #11lord_karsusJun 06, 2008 13:08:39 | I'm bringing in the gavel. The statement does not apply to the matter of this thread, Mr. Karsus. -Sure it does. Is not the OP asking for help running his/her campaign? As it was discussed, concerning a matter of 4e, it is therefore irrelevant to the case at hand. If you continue such line of prosecution, I will hold you in contempt. -No, it wasn't anything about 4e, 3e, or any other edition. It was edition neutral. The statement is quite clear. "I'm afraid this forum is actually worthless for anyone who wants to intelligently discuss running an FR campaign." -Obviously, this is untrue. |
| #12StiggerJun 06, 2008 13:43:33 | Can we just drop this before it strays with a tangential debate? :P |
| #13JudgeDookieJun 06, 2008 13:49:45 | -Sure it does. Is not the OP asking for help running his/her campaign? As his comment was based in a 4e thread and not 3e (or FR general) at the time and place he made such statement, it cannot automatically be applied to FR as a whole. There is nothing there that doesn't dictate his statement wasn't made in bias to 4e. Therefore, it becomes circumstantial and holds no weight. It's like a Baby Ruth. It simply floats. ![]() |
| #14merrikcaleJun 06, 2008 15:01:29 | I love Babe Ruths........ now what were we talking about again............. |
| #15ikkiJun 06, 2008 15:17:31 | I will be DMing for my first time soon & I'm in need of some advice, would you be willing to help me with some advice on running the Forgotten Realms campaign? Sure, guess not even knowing which issues might be issues? Anyway, start by knowing the adventure. Campaign is a bit harder still, since that indicates followup to a next adventure and so forth. Then its knowing your players. Ofcourse, never having dmed before, you may not know which ones may ... sideline, the adventure. You know, instead of protecting the dying king.. they loot the castle, killing any guards etc that come in the way. Prepare for how you will react to such. A really expirienced dm could pick it up, and keep going on the outlaw theme, but for a beginner it might be easier to just overwhelm with guards/level+3 paladins (and shift all players to evil, so smiting works) and then have a public execution of any survivors ;) Then also on more personal level, preparing small speeches that npc:s have, questions and answers and the like. Maps.. now thats a potentially huge issue, they will want to know where they are, what kinds of bars etc shops are availble. Going by mere streetnames and you digging up refernces... ugh.. How well do the players know the realms, how will this affect the world? Something worth thinking about. |
| #16merrikcaleJun 07, 2008 21:31:35 | Sure, guess not even knowing which issues might be issues? Wow. This guys pretty helpful. And here I just wanted to talk about candy bars |
| #17lord_karsusJun 07, 2008 22:26:17 | Can we just drop this before it strays with a tangential debate? :P -Sure. As his comment was based in a 4e thread and not 3e (or FR general) at the time and place he made such statement, it cannot automatically be applied to FR as a whole. There is nothing there that doesn't dictate his statement wasn't made in bias to 4e. -The debate had moved away from 4e (for some time). The statement was also a general blanket statement. It was not, "In this thread...", which would imply that particular thread, or "With, so and so...", which would imply a specific poster. It was a very general and very broad "I'm afraid this forum is actually worthless for anyone who wants to intelligently discuss running an FR campaign." Wow. This guys pretty helpful. And here I just wanted to talk about candy bars -Yeah, go figure. |
| #18JudgeDookieJun 08, 2008 7:05:23 | Wow. This guys pretty helpful. And here I just wanted to talk about candy bars Yes, he is. I would suggest listening to him, rather than our candy bar eating asses. -The debate had moved away from 4e (for some time). The statement was also a general blanket statement. It was not, "In this thread...", which would imply that particular thread, or "With, so and so...", which would imply a specific poster. It was a very general and very broad "I'm afraid this forum is actually worthless for anyone who wants to intelligently discuss running an FR campaign." And when does any thread, much like this one, completely stick on topic? His post was made on a specifically 4e thread. Therefore, in context or not, it belongs there. It's like Myfaeia saying, "I'm DMing for the first time--how do I keep the PC's happy?" and you replying, "Have Stigger curb stomp all the kitties." It is not applicable to the population as a whole. Well, unless everybody has decided to start curb stomping kitties. ![]() Have they? |
| #19Mr_MiscellanyJun 08, 2008 12:46:33 | PLEASE keep it on topic people. @Myfaeia OK, please go ahead and post any questions you like. You've got lots of people interested in helping you and I'm sure that from this point forward they will not clutter your thread with garbage posts that are off topic. It's your game and we're here to help. :D |
| #20lord_karsusJun 08, 2008 13:25:28 | His post was made on a specifically 4e thread. Therefore, in context or not, it belongs there. -This statement was made in a thread discussing the 4e books, but the statement itself had nothing to do with 4e, 3e, or any edition. |
| #21JudgeDookieJun 08, 2008 13:57:35 | -This statement was made in a thread discussing the 4e books, but the statement itself had nothing to do with 4e, 3e, or any edition. In respect to the two posts already made: PLEASE keep it on topic people. I'm ashamed of you, Mr. Karsus. As forum lead, you should know better. ;) I'm still right though. ![]() ;) |
| #22lord_karsusJun 08, 2008 15:00:17 | As forum lead, you should know better. ;) -As I already discussed with him, this is on topic. Because, of course, if nothing we say can be trusted, as we do not intelligently discuss Realmslore, what good is our advice? -We further await more specificity from the OP, anyway. I'm still right though. -Sure, sure, sure. |
| #23JudgeDookieJun 08, 2008 15:09:49 | -As I already discussed with him, this is on topic. Because, of course, if nothing we say can be trusted, as we do not intelligently discuss Realmslore, what good is our advice? Very good point. Well, as long as all parties are in agreement.... -Sure, sure, sure. Good. I truly hate having to deal with your argumentative ass. Besides, I should be right all the time. Makes me happy. ![]() Now, where the f*ck is my cookie...? ![]() |
| #24merrikcaleJun 09, 2008 21:59:40 | I'm ashamed of you, Mr. Karsus. As forum lead, you should know better. ;) don't call him forum lead, it will go right to his head |
| #25JudgeDookieJun 09, 2008 22:22:36 | don't call him forum lead, it will go right to his head Now, now. We all know Karsus is a very humble man. Why would you say such a dirty thing? ![]() |
| #26merrikcaleJun 12, 2008 21:30:54 | Now, now. We all know Karsus is a very humble man. Why would you say such a dirty thing? Have you read his signature? |
