(2) The four useless siblings are fragments of Lyra and Will's souls
(3) Mrs. Coulter becomes the White Witch after studying witchcraft with the witches
(4) The closet portal is created by the subtle knife

This is how I got my friend to understand the nature of changes to FR after the 4th edition begins... and we both aren't very big fans of Chronicles of Narnia.
