Implementing a guild

One of my players asked me, the other day, to have his character be part of the "Brotherhood of the Burning Heart". A guild which have the Heartfire Fanner PrC in it.

Now, I'd like to take it up a notch and have the brotherhood in the background of the game (sort of like the harpers guild in the baldure's gate II). I want to see him interract with them - buying, selling, making contact, asking for favors - ofcourse, in both ways.

Does anyone have tips on how to accomplish that? what should I as a DM bring in? what should I tell him?
How does the brotherhood manifest itself in the realms anyway?
I also remembers something about an guild-membership rule of some sort. Does anyone familiar with that sort?

Any input will help.
Thanks! =D

I'm not familiar with the guild, so I'm not sure where it usually operates or what the organizations goals are other than what this told me--

"Heartfire fanners teach the ways of the Brotherhood of the Burning Heart, as well as epitomizing those qualities the Brotherhood espouses. In their travels they further inflame their souls by giving the uninitiated a taste of what true life feels like. Trained in techniques that evoke a plethora of powerful emotions in their comrades, they earn converts to their cause not with convincing words, but with demonstrations that show others what they miss by living in their cold, mundane ways."

Some questions to start you out would be:
  • Do the Heartfire Fanners have enemies? If so, who and why?

  • What alignment are they associated with?

  • Do they worship a specific deity, multipul deities, or none in particular?

  • What does it take to become initiated?

These questions will help you determin how they might act or react to your PC in the setting. If your character is a Bard, then they might seek him out if he's done certain things to attract their attention. If he actively pursues them they might attempt to hide from his attempts, challenge him, or even start him on the path to becoming a Heartfire Fanner right off the bat.

There is a feat, Guild Membership I believe, in the PH2 that allows members to gain access to the guild's magic, money, and related bonuses plus a number of specific abilities that the guild might possess. It's not required to gain entrance into a guild, but to gain benefits from it.

I, however, disreguarded the feat. I didn't feel any player would take it when they would rather spend a feat on something better that would benefit them more. If you would like to use the feat, then I suggest taking the feat would increase their affiliation score within the Guild by a few points (say 1/2 your level + 5 or maybe 1/2 your level + your Charisma modifier since it's a bardic guild?).

Anyways, I hope that some of that helps. For some reference, you can look at my own Guild I came up with in the Forgotten Realms and see what i've done, maybe that will help you?

Neither am I. All I know of it is from Issue 314 of the dragon magazine. Which my player brought to me the other day to read.
I'm looking for other's thoughts of ways to assimilate the brotherhood/PrC/guild into the faerun setting and of a way to interruct with the player via his 'order'.

Non mentioned.

  • What alignment are they associated with?

As being followers of the flame I guess that they are of a chaotic type. Yet, nothing is mentioned of that sort.

  • Do they worship a specific deity, multipul deities, or none in particular?

Well, in their explanatory article they do not mention any deities of the sort. However, I guess that deities such as Lliira, Sune and Sharess are the most appropriate ones.

  • What does it take to become initiated?

According to the text being part of the brotherhood is simply a matter of following the Numa's ideals.

He is already known to the brotherhood and is considered to be some sort of initiate. So that aspect is rather mute. Once he reaches sufficient level he will undergo a test inorder to become a Heartfire Fanner. So that aspect is rather mute.

I agree with you on that one. Not that I know how the feat works or anything but it seems to me silly on spending feats on something that is not self-improvments. After all, this things are feats of strengh for oneself.

Anyways, I hope that some of that helps. For some reference, you can look at my own Guild I came up with in the Forgotten Realms and see what i've done, maybe that will help you?

That guild reference seems well done! I'd like to have something like that. I still have the problem of immersing the brotherhood into the Realms since both my personall knowledge and Issue 314 fail to provide answers to the questions you have brought up.
