Dec 30, 2008 10:41:27 How have people used monsters that arent in the FR officially in their world? A lot of the creatures in the old MMs have paragraphs explaining how they can be used. A lot of these monsters need to be turned into edition 4 monsters because they dont have official stats in any books yet but I still want to know. For ideas in the future.

Dec 31, 2008 6:41:23 well for individual monsters you don't need much adjustment, just look at climate/terrain

for races it's fun to discover gaps in FR history where they can be placed, often on the edge of the civilization, but this is too general subject, any specific race?

in 4e they removed most of the monster lore, they do nothing until adventurers come and fight them

Anyway, Paizo went the complete opposite way, having 're-imagined' standard D&D monsters with new flair, but only covering a few per book. I think there should be a happy medium somewhere there in-between...

Oh wait! There was... we called it 2e. :P

Anyway, to stay OT, I would say I use monsters from everywhere. I'm particularly fond of the critters from Mystara, but several beasties from the 3e Dragonlance material have made it into my games (which are actually canon, if you read the Anauroch source carefully).

I also like to sprinkle in some of the weird monsters from the Athas/Dark Sun setting in all my desert/Wastelands regions.

Hell, if I like it, it always finds it way into my FR. :D

Or any setting or rules I use...
