I need info about the above mentioned half-drow, half-fiend.
Thanks in advance!

-As I am sure you know, he's in the first book of the Empyrian Odyssey trilogy, but I am unsure about any appearance in the second. I never bothered to pick that one up. Regardless, those novels would be his only mentions.

Well, I know. Maybe someone could tell me more about him?
Maybe there are more half-drow half-fiends around? Not draegloths? That's the reason I'm interested in him.

-The type of Demon doing the mating, and who is actually giving birth would influence whether or not the offspring was a Half-Demon, a Half-Drow, a Draegloth, or whatever other combination, I would think.

Is he the departed Mizzyrm's son? and if so does that have any barring on his storyline?

-Yes.

-Thus far, I don't believe so. I, as I said, only read the first book in the series though. So, maybe.

I know it all. So I'm looking for examples of half-fiends drow. Not draegloths. And the only one I know about is Kael.
We've had enough draegloths and info about them (thanks for EoF ;) ) but not much about their lesser kin, the half-fiends.

Tielflings are, and always have been, human stock tainted with infernal influence of one type or another. One might use the Tiefling racial statistic as a starting point for a write-up for a creature such as Kael. I think there's too big a difference between the two for it to be of too much help; but the Tiefling would be worth a glance, at least, in this regard when aiming for game balance.

I didn't even realize this Kael existed before reading this thread's title. As soon I read this, though, I knew he must be Pharaun Mizzrym's son. Well done, Mizzrym. ;) I'd always hoped Aliisza would resurrect him. Any sign of that happening? He might be my favorite drow character of all time.

I'm certain that others of his sort exist...but he'd probably be something closer to a half-drow (stat-wise anyway), and I'm honestly not sure if he gained any real benefit from his mother's demonic blood, anyway.

Show
He's gotta be the first half-drow paladin of Torm I've ever seen, though...kudos for that.

his stats would be more similar to fey'ri than tiefling

tough I disagree that tieflings are of human stock dominantly, that's such a human-centric view of the multiverse

The author of the books has clearly stated on Candlekeep that Kael is drow half-fiend. I'm not sure if there was a half before 'drow', though.

Paladin of Torm, eh?

That's how they've usually been presented in the source material. Maybe that's human-centric, but it is what it is.

Yep.

Tieflings= human/infernal blend.

This is why we have races such as the Fey'ri. Some of their rulers, such as Sarya Dlardrageth, were half-fiends. The other Fey'ri were "tiefling elves", as you'd describe them. Except, they aren't tieflings at all, because "Tiefling" always indicates human as the baseline creature. That's why they're fey'ri, a seperate race altogether.

Well, since Aliisza was already a half-fiend, he'd technically be, like...1/4 fiend, 1/4 human, 1/2 drow (though now we're getting a tad complicated)

Well, Kael is that, but in D&D mechanics he's half-fiend half-drow.

Well ... they never really created the alu-fiend in anything officially D&D 3.xE. In AD&D it was a lesser tanar'ri (who saw a few changes, one of the later version can be found in Hellgate Keep or For Duty & Deity. 3.5E had the cambion, included in Expedition to the Demonweb Pits. It is indeed some special variety of half-fiend, though in this book it only is concerned with powerful - tanar'ri fathers and planetouched (i.e. tiefling) mothers.

Methinks the old version was incubus & human female -> cambion, succubuy and human male -> alu-fiend, though Shemeska can surely confirm this.

In any case, by unless I am mistaken, fey'ri are the tiefling variety of elves, as described in many a sourcebook on them. So by default, Kael would be some sort of 'drow fey'ri', not that he looks anything like that. Then again, they have the alter self ability.

What was more interesting in this series was the possibility of marilith getting pregnant (at the start of the 1st novel), something hardly mentioned before.

Well, it was mentioned before: Kaanyr Vhok is a son of a marilith female and human male. It's confirmed in DDGtU.

And as for Kael: fey'ri are surface elves, so there's nothing like 'drow fey'ri'.

Nope. First, I wrote "hardly" when talking about mariliths getting pregnant, since I know all about the Dlardrageths and the Scourged Legion, its leader and other inhabitants of Hellgate Keep. And second, the fey'ri are not surface elves, they are forced breeds of sun (and captured other elves, methinks) elves and succubi and incubi, done by the suns of House Dlardrageth and others. Hence, they are native planetouched and given their pedigree essentially elven tieflings. Cloak & Dagger, when talking about the Dlardrageths, gives a good run-down of the Daemonfey and their fey'ri servants. Mating drow with a succubi would hence result in something like a fey'ri, with probably some more features like better darkvision and permanent spell resistance, since both creatures have that. ECL would go up accordingly.

I don't recall Kael having used any of his half-fiend abilities in either novel. Is he considered sanctified, forswore the use of them or ...? They sure would have come in handy when in the 2nd book, considering the nature of his foes...:P

Thomas Reid has mentioned it too. He presumes Kael will show them later. Check the Candlekeep forum.

As for fey'ri - they descend from the surface elves (suns of House Dlardrageth and their leal Houses) and succubi. Aliisza is not a succub, she's an alu. That's a difference of one generation. So Kael isn't a fey'ri in anything.

"Fey'ri" is essentially the name given to the elven variety of the "tiefling". Much like "tanarukk" is the/a tiefling form of the orc. Alu-fiends as well as succubi were - at the time still "true" demons, lesser tanar'ri, to be precise. Hence the adding of "-'ri". Do mind the difference of editions here. Matter of fact, when speaking on those "fey'ri" (as I said, a loose term) in detail, they give them as e.g. "CE female half-elf tiefling M10". It can all be found in Cloak & Dagger where, AFAIK, they made their first appearance, at least in any greater detail.

Kael is a special case, as he skips editions, at least where his mother is concerned. She started as a lesser tanar'ri (Hellgate Keep) and was a victim of the 3E, as her demon variant wasn't converted. Going by default lore, she was (much like Kaanyr Vhok) just a half-fiend. Following that line of thought, breeding with a humanoid (in this case, a drow) resulted in tiefling offspring. Since drow are elves, her offspring can easily be termed "fey'ri", since that is the word for "elven tiefling". That is how I see it. ;)

And, BTW, do note that Magadon of the Twilight War series of Paul S. Kemp should not be a direct child of Mephistopheles either, even though the latter claims to be his father. For if that were the case, Mags would be a unique half-fiend too. Authors, you know.

Yeah, if we are to term Kael, we can use it too. But as far as the mechanics goes, he is what Thomas Reid has said.

In one of the monster manuals from 3.5 under half fiend is a picture of a drow half fiend. Dark skin bat like wings. Applying the described half fiend aabilities to the drow base creature, if memory serves.

I have to admit, I was wondering about that myself. If Mags was the son of Mephistopheles, wouldn't he be a full-blown half-fiend rather than "just" a tiefling? *shrug*

Well, I have no problem with that. If an author (and designer) tweaks the rules for a (novel) character, so be it. Most of the current crop utilize the rules for their characters, or at least keep them in their sights while writing. If the odd chap or lass in a novel is something special, fair enough. Same with Mags. Haven't checked what Paul made him over at Candlekeep, where they were assembling stats for Cale and Riven.

In the book it stats that he is a half fiend. People believe he is a tiefling and he plays it off as so but when he starts to crack and his father becomes a player in the books it is reveiled that he is indeed a fullblown halffiend and one starting to take a fall off a rather deep cliff that is insanity. That tends to happen when your father turns out to be the Big Guy on the Eighth Level of Hell itself.

Well, they hired him as a scout and methinks the word "ranger" appears a few times. That he has psionic abilities is not known for some time, but Cale pretty quickly determines that he is no ordinary human. Still, going by common descriptions, he does not come over as a "normal" half-fiend. Then again, many unique half-fiends look far from the "normal" or "default" half-fiend of the MM, and always have.

phelf_der_zemit

Ya. at the begining he's just a scout. but then riven has the famous line "You know that mind mage I mentioned before."
Cale answers "Yes."
Riven replies "Now you do too."

And he has the basic tiefing get up, but in the latter books and exspecially shadowbred he starts to transfrom into an even more scalely and big horned freak with brimstone colone and glowing eyes. When at the begining all he had was a birth mark and nubs on his forehead. Not as freakish as most but still, a drastic change.

Maybe Magadon went through this transformation...

Methinks the old version was incubus & human female -> cambion, succubuy and human male -> alu-fiend, though Shemeska can surely confirm this.

Cambions were the male offspring of male tanar'ri and mortal females. Depending on the type of tanar'ri involved, the resulting cambion was considered either a major or baron/marquis cambion. Alu-Fiends were specifically the female offspring of succubi and mortal males.

In any case, by unless I am mistaken, fey'ri are the tiefling variety of elves, as described in many a sourcebook on them. So by default, Kael would be some sort of 'drow fey'ri', not that he looks anything like that. Then again, they have the alter self ability.

Fey'ri are a specific line of elven tieflings descended from House Dlardrageth and allied noble houses, and the tanar'ri they interbred with. All fey'ri are elven tieflings, but not all elven tieflings are fey'ri.
